It's not the music that concerns me I like all music. But very large groups can take over a whole ship depending on their size, so instead of the usual pool side activities led by the CD the radio station I see is going to be doing their thing pool side on a sea day and I'm not sure what that is going to mean to me. Could be a great thing and a cruise unlike any other I have ever taken and then again, could be the worst ever, not sure.

Have you looked at the radio station's website to see what they are saying aobut the cruise? Also, it might just be a few people who win a chance to cruise with the station staff. My mom and dad won something to Jamaica once through a radio station and there was just a group of 6 or 8 plus the staff that came with them.

Again, this could be a lot of fun, but then again, could be just way too much

Even if they inflate the numbers you will at least have a general idea of whether they expect 10, 100 or 1000, etc. If it's less than say 250, no problem. If it's 1000 that is a large percentage of the ship and you may not have access to areas normally public because they have them tied up.

My husband did that, but our thinking is they will probably inflate the numbers, if they give them at all, since who wants to go to a "party" that no one is attending?

 

Good point, but there really isn't much else you can do.

Unless they've chartered the whole ship, NCL is not going turn anything over to them. There are pool activities every day for everyone. The slot tourney will not take place while docked in Bermuda, and everyone will have access to the restaurants. What they can do is reserve some space for them in the casino and in the restaurants. They'll have to get up at midnight if they're going to beat the chair hogs to the pool, however :D

did you notice they have a "formal night" listed. I wonder if that is for their group, or they think the ship is formal - WRONG.

 

As to the inport Slot Tournament. They "might" be able to do this. If there is no money being gambled, they "might" be able to use the machines.

Guys, I love your observations, and based on what is true or not true, they may have a good time (if all of these events do happen), however; let's not forget about me, lol! What do you think about my concerns about how this will impact my vacation?

 

BTW, after researching about the casino being open, there is so much contradictory info on the internet and still do not know if it still is true that casinos have to close while in port. On NCL's website, describing their Bermuda cruises, they say enjoy your day on the beach....... and come back and enjoy the casino at night. Not sure what this means either?

 

Anyway, thanks for all your input, I have a lot of respect for your opinions.

We have a local radio station that has a cruise each year (although I believe it's on Carnival).

 

There are about a couple of hundred that attend and it seems they make their presence known, cause afterwards they talk about what so and so did, how the other passengers were looking at them like they were crazy, etc. It seems that it gets worse each year, since they all get to know each other and attend.

 

On the other hand, we've been on a cruise that had a medical convention onboard (Celebrity) and we didn't even know they were there (except for a nice conversation with one of the attendees in the hot tub).

I was on a carnival cruise once that had over 700 nurses on it doing a continuing education course. We were up on Lido at 6 am having coffee when they were having a 'drowning' cpr class at the pool. So someone was in the pool face down not moving and people who didn't know what was going on were screaming and yelling for help. And it looked like people were just standing around watching but of course it was the nurses discussing it and preparing to do the cpr.

The casino has always been closed while in port in Bermuda. Possibly it it open for this special group for a slot tournament for prizes and no cash is being gambled. It seems a lot a "special" changes are being made for this group and I suspect they could be quite a large part of the cruising community on this sailing. It's a tough decision for you, I know. Glad to see you had such a great time on your last cruise. We'll be sailing to Bermuda on June 26 and can't wait. Would you say, the Gem was better than the Jewel we were on together? Let us know if you find out that they are opening the casino for this group for sure, and at that point all cruises to Bermuda should have gambling now in Bermuda. Have you asked NCL about the gambling situation? Take care Carol

Phyillis: I checked on the Bermuda board and someone posted a question regarding gambling while ships are docked in Bermuda and the answer is NO. This post was pretty recent, the beginning of March of this year. That makes me think that the radio station ads are wrong or it is something special with no money being waggered for this group - if this is even allowed.

Hey Carol, good to hear from you. I did call Harrah's casino marketing and they said they can only advise what is in their system currently and as of right now, the casino is closed. However, sailings to Bermuda do not start until May this year, and though I love them, it is NCl, so who knows. I looked into your sailing originally, and was glad to see you on the roll call, but I just couldn't get the dates in June and early July to work for my family (we have 2 dogs and a teenager that need to be accounted for during our absence and the week of 7/31 just worked for all concerned).

 

As far as Gem and Jewel, you know I really loved the Jewel, and still do. But on my recent sailing I ran into many of the crew from the Jewel on the Gem. Though he was on vacation for my sailing, Sinan who was in charge of bingo on the Jewel last year, is now their CD. Meagan, who was entertainment crew last year is now the ACD and I think she is fabulous. Many of the casino workers that I got to know on the Jewel are on the Gem as well. In addition, the Senior Officers of the Gem were the best. They were everywhere, you could not go a day without seeing them all over the ship and involved with the pax and crew and a nicer bunch you could not ask for. The HD, Sean, as well as Captain Roger, were so personable and caring. I think you will absolutely love the Gem. Of course, if there is something specific you would like to know, I will do my best to advise you.

Since sailing to Bermuda will not begin until May who really knows what the deal will be. NCL and Bermuda do have a "special" relationship, I've read about their contracts with the Bermuda government and dollar amounts they contribute to the island. We were on NCL a couple of year's ago, can't remember which ship or the exact port, but I am going to go out on a limb here and say St. Thomas, and were shocked that during our overnight stay they were able to open the casino. They said they had a special arrangement with that island...... We will only know for sure once the first set of cruisers return from Bermuda next month and post.

Looks like gambling on cruise ships while in Bermuda is the in thing. Just Google "gambling on cruise ships in Bermuda" it is all over the internet.

 

OP you should see i8f you can change your dates you don';t sound like you will have a good time.
