golfadj Posted June 2, 2011 #2 Share Posted June 2, 2011 Wonder how this will play out but notice article is talking about 7 day a week cruise activity and wonder where that idea would have come from.
frangran Posted June 2, 2011 #3 Share Posted June 2, 2011 I suspect that Mobile would welcome the Fantasy back with open arms....
Rare graphicguy Posted June 2, 2011 #4 Share Posted June 2, 2011 Yeah....if I were Carnival, just walk (sail) away from that port. I wouldn't want to port anywhere there is animosity regarding a company as big as Carnival, and any unwelcome feelings towards their customers (the passengers). Crusing Nut Posted June 2, 2011 #5 Share Posted June 2, 2011 So the city allowed Carnival to come there. There must be some agreement between Carnival and the city about the new dock being built. Now their uninformed citizens want to sue? Good Luck with that! What makes those people think that this is going to be 7 days a week thing? Unless Carnival is also going to make this a port to visit. Carnivalcruiselady Posted June 2, 2011 #6 Share Posted June 2, 2011 Having Carnival there brings revenue to the city of Charleston and jobs. In April of 07, we left Charleston on the NCL Majesty. I guess NCL pulled out of there. If you want, Carnival probably will also.
jrdbrn Posted June 2, 2011 #7 Share Posted June 2, 2011 I welcome the ship to NOLA. More ships = lower prices :) Get out of that wack town.

98Charlie Posted June 2, 2011 #9 Share Posted June 2, 2011 It saddens me to hear about these ``groups' '' views of cruiselines and pax. We, too, sailed out of Charleston several years ago on NCL Majesty. Spent a couple of days after our cruise in Charleston and loved each and every minute of it. Loved the charm of the city as well as the great southern hospitality. Also dumped a good share of our vacation dollars shopping in the city as well. These groups, through their protests, are putting a whole new definition to ``southern hospitality'' in the eyes of thousands of potential visitors to their beautiful city. Have to wonder what Charleston's Convention and Visitor's Bureau thinks about this legal action. Dianne
Bunkie103 Posted June 2, 2011 #10 Share Posted June 2, 2011 We love Charleston, but we're done with the Nassau/Freeport route also. Maybe Carnival should think about Norfolk and more Bermuda runs.

All4fun&fun4all Posted June 2, 2011 #12 Share Posted June 2, 2011 :mad:The Andrew and I saw this last night and I almost threw a shoe at the tv. SERIOUSLY!!! We FINALLY get a Carnival ship in my homeport and these uppity idiots are going to try to take her away??? UGH! I picked the wrong week to quit smoking.:mad:
Cigar Dude Posted June 2, 2011 #13 Share Posted June 2, 2011 Stupid, just plain stupid. First of all, doesn't Carnival need a city license to be there? They didn't just show up and start sailing! So, sue the great city of Charleston! This is just a bunch of old foggies crying because they don't want change. Plus, cruise ships have already been coming to Charleston before Carnival! The cruise industry means big bucks for Charleston and the mayor should come out right NOW and say he's in favor of Carnival!
RoofingPrincess Posted June 2, 2011 #14 Share Posted June 2, 2011 These people are clearly uninformed. It's not like it's parked in the harbor "7 days a week"! Fantasy is doing 5- and 6-day cruises. Which means they come back, drop off passengers, pick up passengers, and leave again! Perhaps a bit of hassle with traffic, noise, etc on that "changeover day", but that's it... and because they're shorter cruises, that changeover day isn't even the same day every week! It's not like it's EVERY Saturday, as it is in port servicing 7-day cruises. Not to mention the tourist $$ that the ships bring to their city - many cruisers who fly do so to arrive the day before... might stay a day after... which is good for restaurants, hotels, etc! hpreece Posted June 2, 2011 #15 Share Posted June 2, 2011 Wow...what jerks they are. Knowing that boarding isn't 7 days a week!
Elsisi Posted June 2, 2011 #16 Share Posted June 2, 2011 If Charleston doesn't want Carnival, we'd be glad to have them put a ship in Gulfport again! After Katrina and the oil spill, we still have people who need jobs. We have a brand new port, good parking facilities nearby, great seafood, and oh yeah, casinos. South Carolina's loss would be Mississippi's gain!:D
*Mach* Posted June 2, 2011 #17 Share Posted June 2, 2011 I can see Representatives from other ports lining up to knock on the door at Carnival HQ in Miami begging for the ship... I can't think of a single business in the world that would feel at home where lawsuits like these are being brought...

futaba951 Posted June 2, 2011 #19 Share Posted June 2, 2011 Carnival might be glad that they haven't released the schedules for Fantasy yet, or they might have gotten wind of the pending lawsuit and are purposely holding off until they can read the suit. Either way, I think Charlestons days as a Carnival homeport are numbered.
comxkid Posted June 2, 2011 #20 Share Posted June 2, 2011 I agree completely with you. It's a shame that the citizens there are throwing away a huge revenue source. Citizens groups such as those listed in the story do not care about revenue, commerce, and what may be good for the entire community. They typically remember the "good old days" and want things to stay the same as long as they are around. They always use the same excuses; traffic, pollution, noise. Carnival will make an appropriate business decision.
Cigar Dude Posted June 2, 2011 #21 Share Posted June 2, 2011 I agree completely with you. It's a shame that the citizens there are throwing away a huge revenue source. I believe it's a select few that are complaining; not everyone. The Historic Society would be just as happy if nothing changed in Charleston, ever! Someone needs to remind them this is 2011. Cruise ships will not hinder people from enjoying old town Charleston! Come on man!

bingo3 Posted June 2, 2011 #24 Share Posted June 2, 2011 This is a select few people, doubt this will go too far. You will never please everyone. I don't think Charleston has invested in a new port for nothing.
All4fun&fun4all Posted June 2, 2011 #25 Share Posted June 2, 2011 As a 3rd generation Charlestonian with deep roots in this city I have seen this over and over. I understand preservation of historic buildings and such but I cant for the life of me understand why a ship being in port to debark and embark for a few hours for a day (not 7 days a week) makes it a problem. The revenue being brought into our city from folks visiting a day or two ahead of the cruise and/or after is seriously being overlooked. This Williams guy said that 3500 people in our port is too much for our city to handle. What about the Spoleto Festival? What about the Bridge Run? Cmon! I actually heard references that these morons were saying that cruise passengers arent of the "standard desirable for Charleston". Just what the heck is THAT supposed to mean. I love my beautiful town but these idiots are a bad representation of our hospitality.
