jennat Posted July 1, 2011 Author #351 Share Posted July 1, 2011 Safely back in Homer What a day! Thank you to Sarah and Craig for a wonderful day. I am telling you (I'm a tad bossy, you know) add this on to your alaska trip. Pick up the phone and call Emerald Air and let them guide you on an amazing day. I promise you won't regret it.....unless you get eaten by a Grizzly of course. : ) KIDDING!
jennat Posted July 1, 2011 Author #352 Share Posted July 1, 2011 We were do exhausted from the day that most of us napped on the way back. We did spot a whale from the plane, however. After we got back, we headed into Homer for a bite down on the spit (not to be confused with some spit down in our bite) someone's catch of the day. There were tons of tents on the sandy beach along the spit. Little shops dotted the sides of the street.
jennat Posted July 1, 2011 Author #353 Share Posted July 1, 2011 Back to the hotel, where we soak in the hot tub and then head to bed. Tomorrow we are driving to Anchorage. Then our incredible day ATVing. It was our favorite day of the trip (not including bears, that is in a catagory all it's own) I will finish up tomorrow (I promise I will try, at least!) heatherb1958 Posted July 1, 2011 #355 Share Posted July 1, 2011 Wonderful review . Out of our 50+ cruises the two to Alaska have been my favourite, last one being the repo from Vancouver to LA on Serenade for my 50th birthday in September 08, unfortunately RCI don't seem to do those cruises anymore:(. Having seen your wonderful photos of the land based portion I am seriously going to investigate a northbound cruise followed by a week on land then a relaxing southbound cruise for my 55th:)
wannasail4ever Posted July 1, 2011 #356 Share Posted July 1, 2011 Jen, LOVE all the bear photos! They are spectacular! I'm thinking FEAR as close as you were to those big buggers! You definitely need to do a very large photo montage for your den! Beats mounted heads! As for the BVI cruise, isn't the one you're looking at over the 1st? Happy 4th of July everyone! macy
MJN Posted July 1, 2011 #357 Share Posted July 1, 2011 Very much enjoying your review. Wish we were brave enough and also had enough $$$$ for the bear tour. We did check out their website and it looks incredible if it didn't scare us to death! We have already had cabin # 1104 on the Serenade, a sister ship of Radiance and we loved it. We were curious how the views were in the Inside Passage in terms of seeing to both sides and the Hubbard glacier. We were pretty sure they would be great, which was why we booked this cabin the moment it became available last year. Was really surprised that the ship didn't make a 360 spin at the Hubbard glacier. Was it because perhaps there were two much glacier ice in the bay? I know they are cautious around ice floes. Thanks for all the info....we leave to start our journey towards Alaska in 2 days, sail in a week!
Terry & Gail Posted July 2, 2011 #358 Share Posted July 2, 2011 Jen, My DH and I are enjoying this review and spectacular photos! The bear pictures are to die for (not literally I hope! ha ha). We are doing the Southbound Radiance next year about the time you did it this year. This makes it seem so much more real. I'm not a cold weather person, but you have made me eager to see everything! Thanks so much, keep it coming! Gail & Terry

I will try to answer the aft balcony question in case shutterbug or someone else doesn't get on before you leave. I know that from what I understood, shutterbug was extremely happy with her aft balcony. She mentioned several times how protected it was from the wind and how much time they spent out there. So that can only be good, right? Shutterbug??? are you on here?

We will be doing or 1st leg of our B2B to Hawaii and I was wondering if you could give us some suggestions for tours. You are a wealth of info and I like the idea of doing tours on our own instead of going through RC. I can't tell you how much Brenda (Bella Days) and I have enjoyed reading you review. As mentioned before you should definitely be a travel writer.

One thing I would mention is swimming with the Manta Rays in Kona....google it. mjcrouch@4dv.net E-mail me and we will talk about it specifically. My girlfriend that travels a lot goes to Hawaii constantly so I'm sure we can think of awesome things for you to do. I definitely would look into the Manta Rays though (Big Island), Na Pail coast or Waimea Canyon in Kauai......Depends on a lot of things like how much time you have.....we can talk about it. jennat Posted July 4, 2011 Author #373 Share Posted July 4, 2011 Sunday we woke up and hit the road. We needed to drive to Anchorage so that we would be closer to our ATV excursion the next day out of Palmer. It is about a 4 hours drive.....good times. The weather was, how do I say it.....crappy! We did manage to get some better pictures of all the fisherman along the river. I'm not sure if this is supposed to be a "beautiful" drive or not. I wasn't blown away by it but it was rainy and cloudy so you couldn't see the peaks of mountains or anything. Could be that I am from Colorado so I am not as enthralled with mountains (I am exposed to their beauty often).
jennat Posted July 4, 2011 Author #374 Share Posted July 4, 2011 This is Turnagain Arm, the body of water that juts in and cuts off the Kenai from Anchorage (kind of). There is a point called Beluga Point that I really wish we had stopped at. you are supposed to be able to see Beluga whales from that spot. We thought of it but you know how it is after driving a bit, you talk yourself out of it. A man on our tour the next day had done it and saw them. BUGGER! When you get to Anchorage the mapquest directions get confusing (no? not mapquest!) You basically just follow the main road until you get to around 5th for downtown (and turn left) or the airport is a mile or two before that on the left. Seems more confusing than it is (once again, thank you mapquest)
jennat Posted July 4, 2011 Author #375 Share Posted July 4, 2011 We stayed at a B and B called Cooper Whale in.....it was on 5th and L street. We drove around looking for parking. Nope, no parking lot.....you either had to run out and put money in the meter every 2 hours or park at a parking garage a couple blocks away. Thought that was kind of odd but maybe that is common in a big (?) city.... (I just like to look at myself in the mirror ; )) The weather had cleared up and the sun was out. We walked downtown and shopped a bit. There are a bunch of touristy shops on 4th street. On the way to dinner I decided I wanted to see the Aurora Borealis show at the IMAX. Don't know if I have told you about my A.D.D. yet but yeah.....that wasn't happening. As beautiful as the slllllooowwww motion pictures were set to classica(zzzzzzzz)l music. There was no way I was making it. About 15minutes into it, my husband asked how I was doing. I was doing Fantastic. I was getting so much done. I had balanced my check book mentally, added up all the points I had accumulated for my RCCL card and attempted to use ESP to contact life on other planets. ....Needless to say, We left early, claiming a medical emergency (hey, ADD is real!) So, if you are anything like me, unless you need a nap this may not be for you. If you enjoy yoga, Japanese gardens and elevator music definitely check this out. You are a better person than I. We headed out to eat at Humpy's...a local favorite. In fact, the week we got home we got to see the Man vs Food guy there (on the television) The food was great....definitely get the pizza. It the definitely a hole in the wall, struggle to grab a table when one comes available, kind of slow service but it was so good, we went back the next night. Tomorrow we are headed out to Palmer (by Wasilla, about 40 min toward Denali) to go ATVing.
