Karen, according to Captain Andersson on Enchantment, Shawn McDuff, who is presently the Staff Captain on Oasis, will be his reliever when he goes on vacation in February.

 

Captain Andersson will return from vacation on April 13 to take the ship on her repo down to PC. Didn't find out when he actually starts his vacation. If I do, I'll let you know.

EN went through her enhancements the end of last year so Shawn will start with a regular itinerary.

I was wondering that, when I did not see his name on the list. He was Captain on my first Royal Caribbean cruise back in 1993. Last I had heard, he was still sailing, but perhaps he retired recently....

Rumors have been rampant and Darlene has seen them and said all were not true. She said she would tell me what happened when RCI said she could tell. I did get out of her that it has nothing to do with the Sunshine class, Capt Bang was offered it but he turned it down. So we'll have to wait.

Subscribing to this thread so I can get the news whenever they deem it appropriate to release. I had the honor of meeting Capt. and Mrs. Bang in 2006 -- lovely people. My son, who was 15 at the time, was amazed at how personable they both were and thrilled that Capt. Bang remembered him each time he saw him. I wish them nothing but wonderful things.

The Staff Captain is second in command, right after the Captain. After the Staff Captain comes the Chief Officer, First Officers, and Second Officers.

Slight clarification, he will be "relieving" Captain Gus, not "replacing." He is "replacing" Captain Anders, as the other of the two captains who rotate off and on every 10 weeks or so.

 

So instead of Captain Gus and Captain Anders, Enchantment will now have Captain Gus and Captain Shawn.

You must not have seen the current list in post 1063. Captain Shawn McDuff will be replacing Captain Gus when he goes on Vacation.

The question is not who, but when. On my January 5th sailing, Captain Gus made several references to February 16th, which is actually one sailing past the approximate 10 weeks since he started. Not sure why that would be, unless perhaps the new Captain is going to be on board and they wanted to do one cruise with both together? I don't know if they do that or not, but it does make it harder to predict when Captain Gus will return for his next 10 weeks.

 

Entirely speculation on my part: Because of the Chesapeake Bay, Baltimore is certainly one of the more challenging ports to get in and out of, maybe they wanted to give the new captain a chance to see it done before he's on his own? I suspect that the relative ease of Port Canaveral is one thing Captain Gus may be looking forward to once Enchantment moves. No longer will he need to stay up all night for the long transit up and down the Bay.

yes, its called overlap (that's the term Capt Bang's wife used). It's done when a captain joins a ship out of a port he hasn't done for a while. I witnessed it Oct 2010 when Capt Per joined Majesty, he shadowed Capt Bjorn before taking over on the following sailing. Even though Capt Bjorn was master, it was Capt Per who was doing the port arrivals/departures. (I was invited onto the bridge for departure out of Miami and for departure out of Nassau, and watched this). Had lunch with both of them and Capt Per was busy with meetings with all the dept heads, so when Capt Bjorn left for vacation Capt Per was able to hit the ground running. And 10 week rotations are the norm, not necessarily the rule. It can vary as it did when Capt Rune came back early on Monarch so that Capt Kjell could have a little break before going to Legend.
