1A vs. Aqua

Ahhhh Bangor. I love it. We only moved up here (from Florida - go figure) 4.5 years ago to be near family.

Bangor does have its' share of problems, but is a pretty neat place to live. Unemployment, drugs, some crime, etc. (but, not as bad as most places). An hour to the coast (Bar Harbor, Acadia National Park etc.), probably 1.5 hours to the mountains (Katahdin) and 2-3 to the mountains of NH. Had to look up Ogunquit on Google maps and that is 2.5 hours south of us. The town itself is located on the banks of the Penobscot river, which allows access to the ocean.

Over the past 10 years the entertainment industry has found us. At that time the National Folk Festival came to town for 3 summers and through that the town developed the American Folk festival. This is a three day folk festival with entertainers from all over the world congregate for 3 days of music, arts and just plain fun. Then a few years back a casino was built and does exceptionally well. Last year an entertainment outfit decided this would be a great place for summer music concerts at the river. Normally not top (today's) entertainment, but certainly well known people. Alan Jackson, Celtic Lady's, Lynrd Skynrd (sp?). Last week Melissa Etheridge gave a concert and on 8/7 Jeff Dunham brings his show to town. To be followed in the weeks to come by the J. Geils band, Bob Dylan, BB King, Lady Antellbellum and Reba McIntyre. Not bad for a small town like ours. We have a population of about 30,000 and will put 10-15,000 in the stands for some of these venues. An new auditorium bond issue was just passed and when finished, we will be able to enjoy this type of entertainment year round.

And to keep this in the cruising realm, American Cruise Lines will, on occasion bring one of their small boats up to Bangor. In fact for the past 3 years or so one or two of them have tied up at the site of the Folk festival.

Bangor is a beautiful (although old) city. Gorgeous in summer and its' fall colors. Even when there is a fresh coat of snow blanketing the ground. It does have some disadvantages, but, all in all a great place to live.

Sounds lovely, thanks for sharing. We want to spend a few days in Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park. I didn't realize it was only 2.5 hours from Ogunquit. One of these days we will make the trip. Thanks!

Thanks for the advise re changing cabin from 8281 to 8283. Contacted TA and she was able to change it, so now we have the larger balcony.

Hope it's a cabin that has the "bed" nearer the bathroom wall. Don't understand by Celebrity has changed some cabins by putting the bed by the balcony . I prefer having the sitting area next to the balcony. But until we get to the room, there no way of knowing which "bed" configuration that room is. It's not listed on the Cabin Spreadsheet.

Hard to believe no one has stayed in 8283 and has filledinthe cabin spreadsheet info. See you on the TA Nov. 28 - Solstice!

Check the cabins on either side. If you can find out where the bed is in those cabins from the spreadsheet, yours will be in the opposite location (they alternate). If that doesn't work, try going up or down a deck or two or so and checking those. Good luck!

Stateroom 8283 has the bed by the bath. You can tell by the deck plans. The room has a fold out sofa bed and all fold out sofa beds are always by the balcony with main bed by the bath.

I think your bed will be near the balcony. That was our preference and it's what we have in 9215. Ours is the first cabin on the angle. My understanding is every other cabin is bed by balcony and bed by bath. So, you can basicly every first and third cabins on the port side will have this configuration. On the starboard side of the ship, the first cabin on the angle would bed bed by bath and so on. Have a great cruise!

Your bed is definitely near the bathroom (vs the balcony). Take a look at this spreadsheet. You will find somone's description of 8285 - as yours is right next door, the bed will be located opposite.

The reason for the opposite placement has to do with the design of the stateroom. The room is not a rectangle shape, like most standard staterooms, but is pushed out on the side the bed is on to allow more head to foot room. Tough to describe, but it will be readily apparent when you get in and see it for the first time.

I think you made a smart choice in changing to 8283.

November, then.

May I please ask where you are checking for the price drops?

Hey there! Glad to see you have a few cruises planned... :D

I'll email you with the companies. Cruise Critic doesn't like it when they're listed on the boards.

I'm always amazed at the amount of 'knowledge" that CC members have!

This is one of the greatest web sites going! Can always find the answer to a question! Thanks to ALL CC members! See you on the TA in Nov!

I'd like the names of the companies too. I need a TA who gives more perks and keeps up with the price drops too. Please send to ritakennh@aol.com . Many thanks Rita

A couple years ago I was on Celebrity's Summit.. and noticed the slanted balconies. I have to ask why anyone would want to stay in them..? They have zero privacy.. yes bigger than a normal balcony..but no privacy at all.

Not that I do anything on my balcony that needs totaly privacy..But I do like to stay in my nightgown, robe , and sit on balcony in the mornings.. I would never do that with an angled balcony. Just trying to understand the allure.

On the S class ships, the angled balconies have the most privacy as long as you stay a little way back from the rail. When you are at the rail, you can see onto most of the balconies on the 'skinny' part of the ship. The only thing I didn't like was that they were so large they made the cabin darker.
