My mom went to the casino on our last cruise together right after it was open and won $2500 on her first pull. That was awesome because she put it towards our S&S so we went on the best excursions and drank and ate whatever! haha I never gamble more that $20 a day but I came out about $400 ahead on my last cruise.

Last March on the Legend two guys took the craps table for over $12,000 combined. I believe one had about $9,000 and the other close to $3,000.

On the Freedom in May a woman won the maximum on the side bet on the blackjack tables. $10,000. They brought out champagne for the whole table!

Penny machine? Sounds more like a $6 machine!

Just having a bit of fun - no ill will.

I know that most machines are not best played at a single unit bet. I'm familiar with Video Poker, where a $.25 machine is actually 5 times that ($1.25) to get the top pay tables. I think, and you slot guys will know this, that most slots are 3 coins, right ?

Penny machines though, I'm not really sure about. I'd guess that nobody ever actually plays $.01 per spin, correct? Do they even work at a single bet level? Do most of them have a particular optimum payback level of play?

Thanks,

Tom

You apparently have never sat next to my husband in a casino! He will play one bloody penny at a time. It drives me out of my mind. I play video poker most of the time, and he will play .25 at a time. It is really amazing how many times he hit a royal flush playing a quarter.

And at least some of the video poker machines on the ship actually are $2.50 (although "quarter" machines) if you hit Max Bet. Which is what you need to do in order to have a chance at a progressive jackpot.

Several years ago I hit around $2500 on the first night of the cruise. Casino was barely open and my husband was over doing the craps lesson. I was killing time VERY slowly playing video poker on a super tight budget. I would hit the button, take a drink, look around, people watch, and hit the button again. On my second $20 bill I did that routine, looked up at the machine, and thought it had locked up. It had... but because I hit the royal. That money paid for all our excursions, sign and sail, and most of the cruise fare. On the last night of the cruise I went back to the casino and hit another royal flush for about $2300 on the same machine. Unbelievable.

Not on Carnival -- they deal BJ from a CSM (Continuous Shuffle Machine), meaning that there is ZERO potential for that type of advantage player. Even Rainman would stand the same odds as a basic strategy player!

Way to shoot down my theory.[emoji6] just learned something, thanks.

A true penny player !! I'd imagine his gambling budget for the cruise is very reasonable. :)

That's super lucky for you, to be dealt a Royal - way to beat the odds! Then a second Royal on the same sailing. I've heard from others that, for whatever reason, that kind of luck runs in streaks. I've only hit a Royal one time, and that was in practice play on my laptop. Then again, I don't really play it much - and since a Royal is hit every 40,000 hands or so, I won't be getting one anytime soon !

Regarding my comment on streaks - I once had TEN cruises in a row where I walked off a winner. We're talking a couple/few grand a cruise. Then I had about TWENTY (or so it seemed) that I was an absolute loser. I just don't get it! At least on my most recent cruise (Solstice last month) I managed to win a couple grand. The last night of the cruise was a stop in Victoria, Canada - and the casino was closed. BUT, as luck would have it - the winds were too strong, so we didn't dock... and they opened up the casino. I just felt that if I gave in to temptation, I'd basically give back my winnings - so we actually skipped the casino and responsibly packed early and went to bed! :D

Correct: It is 1 penny a line but to cover all lines is 30 cents.

30 lines, but you can play up to 10 pennies (credits) per line.

10 credits, but you can change a credit value to be 2 cents.

$6 per push.

But you can play 1 line for 1 cent but if the super duper jackpot combination comes up on one of the other 29 lines you didn't bet on, you win nothing (other than a smile from the guy sitting next to you because in that moment he can do nothing but laugh).

$897,000...yes, that's right. On Liberty Med cruise 2006, second night, on a progressive slot (think it was dollar but I've forgotten).

They sealed the whole bank of machines in heavy plastic to be verified in Barcelona, which was about five days later. Big loss for casino in more ways than one.

The woman playing had no clue, her husband kept yelling omg,omg,omg...the Casino hosts were sweating bigtime.

Very exciting!

You beat me to it. Tom, it was so strange because you would swear the guy was counting if you saw how and when he upped his bet. Of course with a CSM we know it can't be done. Sure he lost some times when he upped his bet but more times than not when he had black out he won. We played on the same table five days in a row and I have never seen anything like it.

Lucky streaks are amazing things - almost like some type of divine intervention!

I was in Vegas for about a week several years ago. I stayed and played at the Bellagio for a few days and slowly donated several grand (small time at that place)! Moved over to Planet Hollywood for the last couple of days and continued to lose. On the day of our flight I went down to play for an hour or so in the morning. I was admittedly playing "scared" since I was in the hole big time. I played one on one with the dealer for at least three shoes. I must have won 80% of the hands I played. I managed to win back EVERYTHING I had lost. IF I had responded to the luck I was encountering, I would have been raising my bets and pushing my luck - likely winning a LARGE amount. As it was, I was a very happy camper just to get out of Dodge with my shirt returned to my back!!

I have seen them seal a machine in plastic in Vegas. In reality a machine hitting a progressive for a huge amount like that and then the whole bank of machines being retired happens on a regular basis. If the progressive of 897K finally hit they had already made tens of millions of dollars off of those machines.....897K was merely a blip on the radar. All they have to do is check to make sure the machine hasn't been tampered with and then a payout is made. Believe it or not, I spoke to a woman years ago that claimed she had a hit like that on a Carnival ship and she described it just like you did, whether or not she was pulling my leg or not I do not know.

It is actually good business to have people get huge jackpots occasionally, it gives the gamblers hope that they could one day do the same. No casino would ever put themselves into a position where something like that could actually hurt their business.

Many, many years ago at the Flamingo Hilton on a $2.00 table, eight deck shoe my wife won 17 hands in a row. Of course we weren't pressing our bets....duh. Then she hit three blackjacks in a row. They shut down the table and moved the dealer to craps.

Funny how some casinos sweat even a $2.00 player.

I was waiting for my husband and was watching a young guy play one of the Cube games where you have to maneuver a "key" thru a certain slot and win that prize if successful. Well, he was. He won $2000. It fell with a thud into a hopper. he reached in, only after he looked around in amazement. He reached in and took his rubber banded block of money. I don't think I have ever seen a smile that big on a humans face.

This story doesn't have a huge payout but it is interesting, at least to me. We were cruising with our best friends. She is very psychic about things all the time. So, we had been playing slots and were tired so we all went back to our cabins. Hubby & I had been in bed at least an hour when our phone rings. Its my friend. She tells me she got in bed and could "hear a certain machine talking to her". So she gets up, gets dressed and goes back to the casino. She put $1.00 (thats one dollar) in a quarter machine, pulled the handle once and won $500.00. , cashed it out and went back to the cabin. $1.00 dollar, one pull. So she called to tell me at about 3:00 in the morning. No more "talking machines" the rest of the cruise. Just that one time.

This thread gets me excited to venture into the Casino more often when on a cruise. I won $100 my first night on a $1 machine and you would've thought I won $1000! But the common scenario seems to be playing the first few days and keep the winnings. Yep, takes discipline.

Yep - almost any place downtown (Fremont Street) came across that way to me. I had a bunch of match play coupons from a promo booklet I wanted to use up, so I tried my luck in 3-4 places there while we waited for the evening "Fremont Street Experience" to begin. The last place, Golden Nugget, was not as bad in that regard... but... I was playing out by the pool and finally hit a BJ. I was paid 6:5 and promptly colored up, as I hadn't even noticed it was not a 3:2 table (too many other distractions)!

On a Mediterranean cruise a few years ago I saw a guy win $985,000 on a slot machine. Carnival had to fly a tech from the US to verify it wasn't a malfunction and a good win. The machine was turned off and roped off until the tech arrived. Everything was ok. The captain presented him with a large check for picture reasons a few days later.

I won at the key game a few years ago on the Dream. I brought it right to Gueat Services to have them add it to my S&S. They unwrapped it and put it through the $ counter and it was short!

In Nov 2000, my H & I were on our honeymoon (the Inspiration) and a woman and her sister were frequent Carnival cruisers. They were our tablemates. They were a hoot. Anyway, one of them was a big slot player, and on our sailing she won $7,500. She said she averaged about $20k a year on the ships.
