Sovereign of the Seas Remembered

Recommended Posts

All this nostalgia, final public voyages, never sail her again, makes me laugh. She's still sailing, making as many people happy as she ever did, maybe even more happy as she now sails 7 night all-inclusive cruises for her Spanish passengers from Barcelona for Pullmantur, Royal Caribbean's Spanish subsidiary. She can even be booked in North America for you Sovereign fanatics.

It was on Deck 7. It was called the "Touch of Class" Champagne Bar.

I have such a vivid memory of the Champagne Bar on the Sovereign. I took my mom on the Sovereign in the 90's. We did a four day cruise on her. It was my mom's first cruise. We went to the Champagne Bar a couple of times and my mom who was a waitress but had the mind and heart of someone who was well traveled loved drinking champagne and eating cavier there. I booked us one of the top cabins (excluding the suites) on the ship. I still have the memory of my mom sitting looking out the window of our cabin and turning to me as she ate some chocolate strawberries or some such treat and saying "look what my daughter did for me" We had such a beautiful time on this ship and in the ports we visited.

My other experience on the Sovereign was actually my first one. My ex-husband and I had done our first cruise on Carnival's Tropicale to the Mexican Riveria. Needless to say, the Tropicale wasn't our impression of what cruising was. We had a good time but were a bit underwhelmed by the Tropicale. Then, my ex-husband won a trip on the Sovereign for being employee of the quarter for his company. I remember boarding her when she was brand new. We boarded in Miami. We breathed a sigh of relief and awe as we boarded the beautiful Sovereign. She was what we thought cruise ships would be. We had a fantastic 7 day voyage on her. I still think she was one of the most memorable ships I've sailed including the fabulous ones of today. I remember that wonderful two story buffet restaurant area. I remember the area where the shops were that had little tables and chairs along the walkway. I remember so many wonderful things about this ship. I will forever think of my mother who is no longer with me and the wonderful times we had on the Sovereign - in the Champagne Bar, in Schooners, in our beautiful cabin, in the casino where my mom loved to gamble and actually won money.

Thanks for the memories.
