Bus to Pompeii?? Trains on Strike

This will not be an issue for you.

For one thing, strikes called in Italy are often either postponed or canceled before they happen,

More to the point, in your case, is that the strike that has been announced impacts Metro Napoli, the company that runs the subway (metro) system in Naples and the funiculars. You can read about their range here: http://www.metro.na.it/metro/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=51&Itemid=64

The train to Pompei is the Circumvesuviana, a different company. Their web site is here: http://www.vesuviana.it/web/en/homepage. There is no strike scheduled for the Circumvesuviana that day.

The buses in Naples are run by ANM (web site here: http://www.anm.it/) and there is no stike sceduled for them that day either.

The most comprehensive and official web site regarding strikes in Italy is here: http://www.commissionegaranziasciopero.it/index.jsp

It is always wise to have a backup plan, just in case. SITA does in fact run a bus from Varco Immacolatella, a short walk from the cruise port, to Pompei Scavi. The timetable can be found here: http://www.sitabus.it/sitabus/campania/orarioCAMPANIA/QUADROVIII_BIS_2010.pdf

Thank all of you for the information. This is our first time in Naples and we really just wanted tosee Pompeii and spent the rest of our day relaxing as our cruise is so port intensive.

Thanks Again,

Teresa

For what it's worth, I think the bus frI ***** Varco Immacolatella is the easiest option if the times fit for you.

Thinking about taking the bus to Pompeii, train to Sorrento, bus thru Positano, amalfi and on to Salerno. Then taking the bus back to Varco Immacolatella. I have found the bus schedules and it should work. What I think I understand is that if I buy an all day ticket (U5), it will cover all of this transportation. Does anyone know if this is correct?

Yikes! There's almost no time to stop at any of these places, you'd basically spend your entire day moving. Is that what you want?

At any rate, the answer to your question is yes, the U5 covers this entire area. A full day U5 costs €12 on weekdays and €6,30 on weekends.

Thanks. We are only taking the bus to the Pompeii station to change to the train there. The Naples train station is a little overwhelming and the bus station is right by the ship. We did Pompeii and Sorrento a couple of years ago. Our main interest is the scenery between Sorrento and Amalfi. If we get an early enough start, we will walk Positano for about 1/2 hour and then continue to Amalfi. From Amalfi, we either need to back track thru Sorrento or continue on to Salerno and see some new scenery. The buses from Salerno back to the bus station near the ship run frequently and only take about an hour so it looks like an easier route for the return. So I guess the answer to your question is yes, we do want to ride by and enjoy the view. The beauty of independent travel is to have back up choices lined up so you can linger if you choose. It all could be a bad idea, but I think we will try it if the weather is good.

SITA has a bus from Varco Immacolatella to Amalfi, there's no need to go through all the hassle switching from bus to train to bus.

The schedule is here: http://www.sitabus.it/sitabus/campania/orarioCAMPANIA/QUADROXV.pdf (next to the last schedule at the bottom of the page) The bus leaves Naples at 9 AM and arrives at Amalfi at 11 AM.

Thanks again euro cruiser. We want to be sitting on the right side of the bus from Sorrento to Amalfi to get a better view of the scenery so the bus direct to Amalfi does not work. Looks like an inland route that skips Positano. I also think there is a direct bus to Positano but same problem. Taking the Amalfi bus inland back to Naples would work but on the quadro scedule only the morning busses are listed. We can check that out when we reach Amalfi. The return bus Salerno to Naples is only an hour and we would also get to see the coast from Amalfi to Salerno but I don't know about the view on that section. Is the all day pass the one that you cannot use before 10AM? You have a lot of good information.

There are a few options by bus. EAV goes from Naples to Ercolano from the bus depot in front of the Circumvesuviana Porta Nolana station. There is also an ANM bus, line #157, from Naples to right in front of the scavi at Hercolano. The difficulty is that the start of this line is about a mile and a half from the cruise port on Via Benedetto Brin.

Metro del Mare used to have a boat from Molo Beverelo (next to the cruise port) to Ercolano but I don't see it listed on their web site this morning. I don't know if the service has been discontinued or if it only runs seasonally, but it's something you could check into closer to your departure.

Thanks for detailed info!

Do you know by any chance if U3 ticket good for any of this buses (EAV and/or #157) or we need to get another ticket to use them?

Thanks!

The U3 is good on all of these buses. The tickets are issued by UnicoCampania, a consortium of mass transit companies in the region. You can read about the company, the agencies involved, and the tickets on their web site here: http://www.unicocampania.it/

The web site also has good transportation maps for Pompei and Naples, among others, and there is an English language version of the site.

Hi, do you know whether sita buses run on sundays and if so how regularly. Also does the bus get very crowded as our friends have mobility problems dont want to end up standing. Is there much of a walk from the bus stop to the entrance to pompeii. Any advice would be greatly appreciated as not keen on catching the train and this seems a good alternative.
