Biggest Fear: boredom on sea days

We are planning to take the 5-day Glory New England/Canada cruise in August, 2012. There are 2 days at sea (separated by 2 days in 2 ports).

I have heard that despite it being August, the weather is chilly and might be too chilly to spend any length of time outside. What can one do during the day other than eat and gamble?

I think you'll find lots of things to do on sea days. There is constant entertainment, shows, activities. I don't gamble, at all...so the casino is not an option for me. I'm not a big drinker, either, so I've never spent a lot of time in a bar. I do read a lot.

I really don't think the weather will be all that cold, I'm sure the internet will have a website that will tell you the average temps and humidity levels for that time of the year.

A vacation for me is gauged by the number of books I read. I curl up by a big window, watch the people, watch for sea animals (whales?), have a drink, read, then watch more people. Checkout the occasional activity, then curl up again and repeat.

Is there anything else? JK. There is plenty to do on a ship during the sea days. You can do as much or as little as you please. Sometimes I use sea days to recharge my batteries for the port days. One of my favorite things to do on the sea days is sit in the atrium area and people watch. There are some interesting people on the ship. I also like to take naps, go to shows and try to win ships on a stick with the trivia contests...

my first cruise, i participated in zero activities other than shore excursions. no pools, slides, hot tubs etc. i relaxed and spent time on the balcony. we saw two shows. we spent alot of time in the casino

my second cruise, i ventured out a bit more. dh & i participated in several games, some together, some separate. i did the 80's music trivia( i won) he did the bean bag toss (and won) i did the name that tune country music (won) we did a bean bag toss again (we didn't win) and did a couple of other games some of which our team won or individually we won or lost. regardless we had fun. we did bring home 5 coveted 24KT gold plastic ships on a stick. This cruise I saw zero shows but i did get in a hot tub once. spent time in the casino.

the third cruise, i vegged again hot tub once, napped on the balcony saw no shows and no casino.

i enjoyed each cruise just as much as the next. i did what i wanted when i wanted. in port, we were very active however with the exception of one veg. out day at the beach.

You will only be bored if you choose to be.

Sea days the cruise entertainment staff goes crazy with activities... from sun up to the wee hours of the morning... If you want you can go from one activity to the next all day long... no worries about being board.

Took my parents on a cruise once...n my dad was worried about not having enough to do... hes the kinda guy who's always doing something.... One of my best memories of that cruise was walking around the deck and stumbling across him... sleeping away on the lounge chair... priceless.. Anyways... he had a fabulous cruise n was never board.

Your description of what you do fits me exactly, except the drink.

We are also going on this cruise in August and so I researched the historical weather data: NYC mid August usually have highs in the low 80s and both Halifax and St John usually have highs in the high 70s. So, it most likely won't be too chilly to spend time outside.

Here are the FunTimes from this same cruise in June 2010 to give you an idea of what activities are available during sea days http://public.fotki.com/Radio88/carnival-glory/carnival-daily-fun-times/

I guess you do not want to cruise with us. :p We love the fact that our TA has 11 sea days. These are days we just kick back and do whatever catches our fancy. We do a lot of people watching, we see ships and sea monsters, we renew our balcony club membership, whatever.

Do not worry, you will find plenty to keep you entertained on sea days.

Last year we were on the 680 passenger Royal Princess and had 5 sea days between Hawaii and Tahiti. I thought I was going to be bored out of my mind because there wasn't a lot to do when compared to the larger ships. Also, the passenger mix was not my idea of a good time either.

Anyway, I kept myself occupied and was not bored, so I don't think you'll have a problem.

It's not going to be cold in August. Your not going to the north pole. It's regularly in the 80's-90's that time of year, a little cooler on the water but still by now way chilly, unless you are from Kuwait.

Boredom and extreme relaxation are only seperated by a state of mind. Have fun.

I am of the firm opinion that you will only bored if you allow yourself to be.

We were on this cruise in July of this year. We had one sunny and warm sea day and one chilly and foggy sea day. There were always activities happening all around the ship on both days. We took the opportunity on our foggy/chilly day to learn how to make towel animals, went to the fun farewell party, played a game of Bingo, and we opened the door to our balcony to watch and listen to the ocean from the warm comfort of our bed as we just chilled out for a while.

There is always plenty to do. The question is do you want to go do it or sit around and complain that there is nothing to do? Personally, if I'm on a cruise....I'm going to find something to do because if I am bored, it's my own fault.

the weather can be chilly, but out of 4 trips up there, we only had one chilly day, and 2 days of fog.

and on my first cruise, i brought a book and my walkman, as i thought i needed to find ways to spend the time.

boy, was i wrong.

I am booking this cruise because it is something different from all the warmer climate island cruises. I said I've heard the weather is chilly, not cold. My friend who took this cruise last August was unable to use the pool except for one day due to the cool temps. That said, I am still interested in seeing the two Canadian towns as well as the cruise itself. My concern was only with the two sea days .... and I can see my concern is unfounded.

On my 7 night cruise, the 3 sea days were better than the days in port for me. I loved exploring the ship, taking photos, enjoying the deck, the pool, the slide, our balcony, the Seaside Theater, the trivia contests, the casino, the shows, tea time, windows shopping, people watching, and the food.

No matter what, don't miss the Newlywed game. Hilarious!

We just got off of the 7 day version of this cruise, just me and my DH. It was my favorite cruise! I expected lots of down time, brought plenty of reading material and got around to almost none of it.

As others have suggested, check through your Fun Times. I'm just going to add, try something different than you would ever think of doing. Sometimes the goofiest things will turn out to be your favorites! And sometimes not. If you're really completely bored with an activity, just quietly sneak away, and you can laugh about it afterward.

Enjoy your cruise! You'll love the ship and the ports!

Seadays have more to do than port days- there are trivia games of all sorts, contests, shopping sales, afternoon tea, chocolate buffets, lunch in MDR, or just people watching, eating, reading, eating, listening to your cruise playlists on your i-Pod, eating, walking the decks, or whatever you want (eating?)

A cruise is whatever you make of it.
