Carry-on wine?

You can read this on Oceania's website - it's fairly common knowledge.

There is no special limitation of bringing wine on board for your personal use. As long as you consume it in your own room, there is no problem.

Should you decide to bring a bottle with you to dining, then a corkage charge will be levied, as the steward will pour for you - and put the bottle away later if there is any left. You can for it another day, as it will be identified with your room number.

We always buy wine at the port and bring it on board. As a matter of fact, there was a wine store right at the dock when we boarded the Maiden of the Marina and we bought bottles on board. If you get a bottle of "Welcome Aboard Champagne", that too can be converted into a bottle of wine and kept by the wine steward for your consumption in any of the restaurants.

I tried to do this on Marina in both the Polo Grill and in the GDR and it was not allowed. I thought we would be able to exchange it for a bottle of house white or red and brought the bottle with us, but I was told no. Best I could do was exchange my warm bottle for a cold one and we drank it with lunch in the GDR, resulted in a fun afternoon.

Did you ask your room steward to exchange it or did you take it to one of the restaurants?

I made the same mistake on our first Oceania cruise some years ago. I took our bottle of champagne to dinner and asked the waiter to exchange it for a dry white.

I did not know at that time, but the waiters, etc. in the dining room are not permitted to do any exchanging. He later introduced me to the head sommelier on board, who was apologetic and gracious, and exchanged it with a lovely Sauvignon Blanc.

If you are in a suite, the butler can also do it for you.....

We will be cruising for the first time with Oceania this coming Feb. I have been reading everything on this board I can find. Please don't laugh, but for some reason I can't picture how you bring wine on board. If you bring several bottles, do you put it in your carry-on or do you leave it in the carton? And if you leave it in the carton, do you roll or carry that carton or do you put your suite number on that carton and someone will take care of it for you?

Also, I have read that in the past on the other Oceania ships they have a wine package you might purchase. Do they have a wine package on the Marina?

We are looking forward to our first cruise. We have splurged and booked the Owner's Suite ! Needless to say, we can't wait to actually set foot on that beautiful ship.

IN the O/S obviously cost is not a factor.

There is a liquor set up in your suite. You could even have wine/liquor delivered to the ship for you. I'll assume that your butler will serve your selections in the room without a minor corkage charge levied when you bring outside wine to the dining venues.

There are wine packages, info will be provided when you arrive.

To bring booze aboard just bring it.

I think this response from Oceania should answer the question.

In response to your inquiry below, please note that Oceania Cruises do not allow liquor (vodka, gin, etc.) or beer to be brought on-board. We reserve the right to prohibit and retain all alcohol brought on-board (unless pre-approved) or bought ashore for consumption onboard the vessel.

With regards to wine, we allow guests to bring wine onto the ship, and we request that guests let us know they are bringing wine on-board so the ship can be advised. The maximum of 3 bottles of independent wine (per stateroom per cruise) can be brought on-board for the duration of the cruise. This includes guests flying with their own wine, or purchasing it on shore.

I hope you find this information useful.

In actual fact, Oceania does not prohibit or confiscate those wines or hard liquors which are brought aboard by their passengers for their personal use, in their staterooms.

Unfortunately, because liberal liquor policies can be ripe for abuse, the fine print must contain the prohibitions listed above, but the reality is that liquor isn't restricted unless it appears that one is trying to abuse their largesse.

Oceania is definitely more understanding/liberal in this regard.

I remember, while on a Royal Caribbean cruise, getting my bottle of limoncello that I got in Sorrento "detained" for the duration of the cruise and only returned to me on the last night.

Didn't need to do this on the Marina....:p

Another case of the HO not knowing what happens on the ships ;)

Unless things have changed in recent months you are allowed to bring alcohol onboard for use in your cabin as stated above by several people

I wonder how many bottle they confiscate on O ??

It would be nice if they either say NO & stick to it or say YES unless the policy is abused then we will confiscate it

Mixed messages do not make happy passengers

On our cruise a couple weeks from now, I think I'm going to bring on a couple bottles of wine, one of limoncello, and one of Bailey's (my favorite). Thinking that's not going to cause any problems but if it does, so be it. Won't be a huge loss.

On our cruise in Sept we shopped at Duty Free in Rome on our way to Istanbul. Had some Scotch, Lemoncello, another aperitif, some wine. No problems. In fact we took most of it off with us in Athens and gave to a friend who lives there!

Took our champagne from TA to Horizons on the last night, exchanged for a cold bottle and shared with our new friends. One of the couples we are meeting for dinner in NYC next Monday. Can`t wait to see them again!

Thanks for the info regarding a liquor store at the pier in Barcelona. I never noticed it before when we were there, and since Barcelona will be our first stop on the Nov. 24 TA, we will be able to purchase our wine there, rather than Funchal. Appreciate the information. :):):)

No problem, counting the days.

If you run low there is a liquor store at the pier in Barcelona once we get there.

Heheeee... :) Good tip there. Might just have to do that, and/or grab a bottle of sangria to bring back onboard! :)
