Someone gave you the wrong information. NCL is one of the most casual cruise lines, with very little in the way of dress codes. Jeans are allowed in every dining room and in general shorts are permitted in all but one of the specialty restaurants and one of the main dining rooms. The restaurants that don't allow shorts on your particular cruise will be listed in the Freestyle Daily...usually it's been the larger aft main dining room and LeBistro.

I believe there is a big area of dress options between

a) jeans and shorts

and

b) dress up.

As to captains dinner night (if they have it), very few wear suit or tux. Most nights you will find most people wearing nice slacks and button down shirts. Woman will have on nice slacks, maybe dresses, but no gowns.

You can wear jeans. On the formal nights, your Freestyle Daily will list one dining room for those who want to dress formally and the other for those who don't.

I never stepped a foot into the formal dining rooms on any of my NCL cruises.

They haven't done that for a few years...and for that matter it hasn't been called "formal night" for years. It's "dress up or not" night.

Just an aside - if you are not going into one of those designated "no jeans" restaurants, you are free to wear shorts or jeans at any time. It's not a "at night" thing, just those restaurants. Wear what you want when you wander around the ship at night.

Stayed at a Ritz Carlton once on Maui that had a "no shorts" rule in all public areas after 5pm. I was there for a golf camp, so I didn't have a choice of where to stay. I had to always sneak down a back staircase to get out to the car. Guess what hotel I never stayed at again when back on Maui ;)

It is the same thing, just differently worded.

Except someone who looks in the Freestyle Daily for "formal night" won't find one, so that's why someone who isn't familiar with NCL should be informed of the correct wording. Also, on many cruise lines that have a "formal night" that dress code is not optional, while the words "dress up or not" clearly indicate its optional nature.

In any event, the main point of my response to what you wrote was that NCL hasn't designated one MDR for those who are dressed formally, and the other MDR for those who are not for several years, so more than the formal versus dress up or not semantics, your response is factually incorrect.

for what it's worth. I do remembers seeing one NCL ad " the only suit you will need is a bathing suit"

this was copied and pasted from Ncl's ask and answer

What Should I Pack?

When it comes to what to wear, you can go resort casual or get decked-out and look your best - it’s your call. That’s the freedom of Freestyle Cruising. We even have special “Dress-Up or Not Night.” It’s the perfect opportunity to get your portrait taken with your family, that special someone or even with the ship’s Captain.

Dress cruise casual anytime during the day, in the buffet and in most specialty restaurants. For women, it includes summer and casual dresses, skirts, regular or capri pants, shorts, jeans and tops. Khakis, jeans, shorts and casual shirts are fine for men. Swimwear is acceptable at the buffet and outdoor restaurant, but a shirt or a cover-up and footwear are required. Cruise casual is also allowed day and night on embarkation day.

Wear smart casual if you are eating dinner in the aft main dining room (our more formal dining room) and in Le Bistro on cruises over longer than five days. For women, it includes slacks or jeans, dresses, skirts and tops. For men, it’s jeans or slacks with a collared shirt and closed-toed shoes. Traditional Bermuda shorts along with long socks, loafers and a blazer are all acceptable on a Bermuda cruise.

We want you to be comfortable, but tank tops for men, flip flops, baseball caps, visors and jeans that are overly faded, with holes or tears and worn below the hips are not permitted in main dining rooms or specialty restaurants. Kids 12 and under are welcome to wear nice shorts in all our restaurants. You may want to pack a sweater too—air conditioning can be chilly.

Since your suitcases are collected the night before we return home, don’t forget an overnight bag for prescriptions and need-to-have items.
