Please be aware that you need to have proof of citizenship when you check in. A passport is best, but you can travel with a duplicate (not photocopy) birth certificate issued by a government agency. Hospital commemorative certificates do not comply, nor do military ID's.... you will be denied boarding. Remember that you cannot join the cruies in the hawaiian islands, because you cannot sail from there to the mainland. Refunds are not offered, so please be sure that you have the necessary documents.

The MS Oosterdam will be sailing on this itinerary on 1/14, 2/4, 2/25, 3/17.

No David sees way too many people denied boarding in San Diego. He is just trying to warn others to make sure they bring the proper documentation.

 

All too often people who choose to take the Hawaii cruise think.... or should I say they DO NOT Think :rolleyes: That since they are going to Hawaii they can travel with just a Drivers License just the same as they were flying to the Islands. They forgot that the ship does stop in Ensenada. Often these people denied have US passports at home. No matter what their travel agent told them, or they skimmed over when they did their on line registration.

There has always been a problem with some not bringing their passport but now that the Oosterdam is doing this itinerary with a larger number of passengers the numbers of those increase.

That's correct, Lisa. What makes it even more dreadful is that you cannot catch the ship in Hawaii. Your 14 day cruise is down the drain, with no refund. On other itineraries you can fly to the first port of call. There have been so many denied boardings and resulting "scenes" that we do not allow access to the pier now, if you do not have the required paperwork. You will be turned away either at the airport or at the security gate.

We cannot even get into the US if we did not have a valid passport. Oh, maybe a Nexus card but no point in getting one if we need a passport for cruises. Ours are only valid for 5 years but many cruises must have 6 months validity left. Just for getting into the US, it is okay to have it to the end of its' life before we return to Canada.

Your first post made it sound as though you had been denied boarding. You didn't indicate whether or not you worked there or how many times you have seen people denied boarding there.

I believe, that beginning this year, us Canucks will be issued passports valid for 10 years, (finally)! ;)

I think anyone cruising on HAL must have a passport no matter where they are sailing.

Always good to have an occasional passport thread - I just got up to verify that mine will be valid for at least 6 months after sailing.

You can still cruise with a Birth Certificate if it is a "closed loop" cruise. Hospital commemorative (footprint) certificates are not valid. Only a government issued (county/state/etc.) one, and not a military ID. Some enhanced drivers' licenses and/or border crossing cards may be used. Be sure to check requirements.
