Saz Posted January 13, 2012 #1 Share Posted January 13, 2012 Could someone please suggest the best method of transport (not too expensive) from Southampton to London, as friends of ours have been quoted a ridiculous price by their travel agent in Oz. Thanking you in anticipation, SAZ.

Thanking you in anticipation, SAZ. Hi Train is definately the easiest option, it is only 5 mins from port to Southampton Central station in a taxi, where you can get direct trains to London that take roughly 90 minutes, worth noting train travel is always cheaper after 09:30 on a weekday Regards Oddjob
Sutho Posted January 13, 2012 #3 Share Posted January 13, 2012 Just turn up and take the train. They depart London Waterloo on a regular basis and it is a quick and easy journey down. At least with the benefit of turning up on a train you have the luxury of getting to the ship on your own rather than turning up in a coach of 30 to 50 and waiting in the coach queue to get off. Rare Host Sharon Posted January 13, 2012 #4 Share Posted January 13, 2012 Possibly even better to book in advance via the internet as tickets are much cheaper booked in advance and you can reserve a seat that way too.
BrianI Posted January 13, 2012 #5 Share Posted January 13, 2012 The best way is not the cheapest way. The best way is by taxi. Other options are train or coach. A taxi would be around £130 and take around 1h30m Train would be about £35 per person and take 1h40m Coach would be around £6per person and take 2h20min You would need a taxi from the port to train/coach station about 1 mile to carry your luggage so add around £6 for this Websites Taxis http://www.westquaycars.com/ http://www.freeindex.co.uk/southampton-taxis.htm Train http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/ Coach http://coach.nationalexpress.com/times-and-fares.aspx?searchId=87f605ae-73fb-4d2a-b718-e66e4e213557 If you use the train or coach then you need another taxi in London to get to where you are going, say £10 Brian
tom_uk Posted January 13, 2012 #6 Share Posted January 13, 2012 The train from Southampton to Waterloo has always struck me as quite expensive - £34.10 for an off-peak single. (The off-peak return is only 10p more!) There don't seem to be any savings for booking in advance, either - it's still £34.10 for a single off-peak for each person. So if you assume at least £5 for a taxi to Southampton, then two people to London, then a taxi from Waterloo to somewhere in central London - £10, say - that's over £80, together with hassle (there's very limited luggage space on the trains, for example). Paying for a car direct from the ship to a hotel in London might well cost more, but would be much easier. Or take the coach.
Saz Posted January 14, 2012 Author #7 Share Posted January 14, 2012 Thank you Oddjob, Host Sharon, Sutho, Brian and Tom for your prompt responses. You've given our friends a rough idea of how to go about organising themselves regarding their transfer from Southampton to London. Cheers for now, SAZ. NSWP Posted January 15, 2012 #8 Share Posted January 15, 2012 National Express coaches, fantastic service and a nice price. Been on them a couple of times, LHR and London to Southampton and vice versa etc. Why take the cruise line transfers!.
bazzaw Posted January 15, 2012 #9 Share Posted January 15, 2012 Les I believe that there is a limit to how much luggage you can take on the National Express coaches. But there is also a practical limit to the amount of luggage you can take on the train from Southampton - these British trains are more like commuter trains and do not have much in the way of storage of luggage. Barry Luggage policy here for National Express coach http://www.nationalexpress.com/coach/ourservice/luggage_policy.aspx It seems you can take 2 x 20kg each person but I dont think they ever weigh them. alibabacruisers Posted January 15, 2012 #11 Share Posted January 15, 2012 Hi, we have used smithforairports and they are excellent. I think the trip from Southampton to our London hotel was around 105 pounds. They were always there when we arrived and the trip was very nice and easy. Their website also makes it easy to get a quote and communication is great. You can hire a sedan or van whatever you need. Hope this helps. Meg50 Posted January 16, 2012 #13 Share Posted January 16, 2012 If they are going to Southampton direct from OZ, there is a train from Gatwick to Southampton central
dsrdsrdsr Posted January 17, 2012 #14 Share Posted January 17, 2012 If they're getting off a P&O ship, the Eavesway network is surely the most convenient way.

Eavesway dont run to London which is what the question was. Nearest would be Heathrow. Brian
