Seago2 Posted January 14, 2012 #826 Share Posted January 14, 2012 I am puzzled. I thought all ports had pilots that kept something like this from happening. Has anyone heard if there was a pilot for the port on board? Asked myself the same question- but then he wasn't in port, was he?

Thoie Posted January 14, 2012 #830 Share Posted January 14, 2012 What do they mean " fleeing ship with the money"? Do they just pile up all cash on the ship in a big bag marked Swag and leave it sitting on the bridge for a quick getaway?

mainelycruising Posted January 14, 2012 #834 Share Posted January 14, 2012 This makes the most sense of anything that I have read thus far. Fantastic analysis. Every decision was being watched and managed from Miami. Every movement on the bridge is seen there. Cost cotting being the operative word here. The electronic transmissions between the ship and Miami should be taken as evidence; the FBI should be in Miami now doing this.

KarenR_UK Posted January 14, 2012 #837 Share Posted January 14, 2012 SKY UK are just reporting that 2 people MAY have been found alive on board the ship - it's breaking news, so no more info yet - ok more coming in as i type - an italian news agency is reporting that firemen are talking to but have not yet reached, a man and a woman 2 decks above the waterline frightening stuff (ElizabethA is obviously a faster typer than i am)

Highlander0108 Posted January 14, 2012 #839 Share Posted January 14, 2012 It has done this in the past as documented in a youtube video posted showing the ship passing by at speed and blowing it's horn. That video does NOT substantiate this. The ship in all likelyhood rounded the point that Concordia did not avoid, and then head more closer to port, definitely the more prudent course. jlajla Posted January 14, 2012 #845 Share Posted January 14, 2012 Yes, the conjecture about what happened is fascinating, and I am anxious to hear about what might have happened to cause this mess, but I'm MUCH more interested in getting more information about the search/rescue efforts. Has anybody heard any more about what is happening with the 40ish people still missing? I just saw the post that said there are reports that 2 more people may have been found onboard. Does anyone know if they are still checking the ship at this point for people? I have no idea how these sorts of searches work, but with 40 people still missing, it seems to me that the death toll is bound to skyrocket. :(

Wouldn’t allow staff to abandon ship because it would harm his career. Crew had to arrange the evacuation themselves, hence confusion.

CruisingMouse Posted January 14, 2012 #848 Share Posted January 14, 2012 Costa Concordia - update Saturday, January 14th 2012 Time 5.30 pm (CET) " I want to express our deep sorrow for this terrible tragedy that devastates us “ - said Gianni Onorato President Costa Crociere- “ I am here only now because, as you will understand, I have been from the down until now on the Isola del Giglio to be close to the rescue operations. First at all, I would like to thank all the authorities, law enforcement and volunteers who made all efforts to help and assist our Guests involved in this terrible event." We are not at this time able to provide an answer to all the questions, because the competent authority are trying with our cooperative efforts to understand the reasons for this incident. On the basis of the first evidences, still preliminary the ship Costa Concordia under the command of the Master Francesco Schettino was regularly sailing from Civitavecchia to Savona, when suddenly the ship stroked a rock. The Master who was on the bridge at that time, understood the severity of the situation immediately performed a maneuver aimed to secure Guests and crew, and started the security procedures in order to prepare for an eventual ship evacuation. Unfortunately, this operation was complicated as result of a sudden tilt of the ship that has made difficult the disembarkation. Thanks to the commitment of all forces coordinated by the Coast Guard, from that moment on, rescue operations have been further strengthened. From the first time the company mobilized all its resources ashore to put in to assist our guests and crewmembers and prevent possible environmental impacts.
