shopping in ft. lauderdale near ships

are there any shops to walk around near the docks in ft, lauderdale?

There are some fun shops around the beach area which is not far. You can take a water taxi all around the area from the pier location to the beach area. The water taxi's are very reasonable, I think $10 for a day pass to ride as many times as you want.

The shopping is by the hotels. No hotels or shopping (or walking) by the docks.

Anyone know of a grocery store near Las Olas Boulevard?

Off the top of my head the only grocery store is a Publix on 17th about 3 blocks from the Marina Marriott and across the street from the Embassy Suites.

I thought I recently read that the old Publix closed (near the drug store in the strip mall) and the new one is behind Embassy Suites/Amerisuites. Hopefully someone can verify that.

Yes, that is correct. the new Publix is about 2 blocks from the Embassy Suites on Cordova Rd. Across 17th st. on Cordova Rd is a Winn-Dixie.

The beach side shops are of the touristy t-shirt type. The water taxi will take you to the more upscale shopping on Los Osas (resort clothing, jewelry, art galleries, restaurants, etc.). They run two water taxi lines, and you may have to transfer, but the ticket is good for all day, and if you tip the driver, they will point out present and former owners of many of the waterside mansions along the route.
