I'm not one to "reserve" a chair. I don't like to sit in the prime spots by the pool cause it is too loud. I find a nice quiet spot (where there are usually plenty of chairs available) and lay in it with my book and bucket of beer. Usually, I "hog" that chair all day by sitting in it. If I decide to go get lunch or something, I bring all my stuff with me. If I want to go lay out on deck again, there are plenty of other chairs to sit in. I've even gone so far as to untie the stacks of chairs on the top deck to get one!

I cannot imagine going to "lay" in the sun. I would be bored before 5 minutes was up. So no chair hog here. HOWEVER, I lOVE the idea of "reserved for cruise critic members" sign and putting them on ALL the chairs. I would just kick back with a DOD and watch the action.

Since we are being honest I have to say I have never hogged a chair. My sister and I are not sun-worshippers. In fact if we get too much sun we get sick. We are non-swimmers so don't car to sit by the pool and we probably prefer a nice quiet place so we can just talk or read our Kindles.

Thats where my fiance and i spent most of our time too. oh no does that mean there will be lifejacket bench hogs too?

i never knew about chair hogs until here. why does everyone want to be by a pool? you can see a pool on land. i want a quiet spot watching the waves.

Too funny! There were a group of us, mini family reunion, we could visit without competeing with the speaker system. We sat there so much, other passengers asked if we even got up to eat! They started calling us The Benchwarmers! Looking forward to our quiet, out of the way spot. Just need to find it on Magic.

I can't stand anyone that hogs the amenities of a cruise ship.

I seriously do not sit in the sun, I get a rash that looks like reptile skin if I do ICK, and it itches. I find the strongest sunblock I can find to do a snorkle, and save my "sun time" for snorkling and other excursions.

But my favorite thing to do on a cruise is sit in the shade and read a good book, which I do often, on my balcony!!!!

I also see people sitting at tables on the Lido playing cards and drinking ALL DAY, it's annoying during lunch rush when everyone is looking for tables to sit and eat for 20 minutes.

Other than that I don't really care, except as I said, being annoyed that people have the nerve to hog amenities, have some thoughts for others on your cruise that aren't so aggressive!!!

I also get why someone would want to be by the pool if they had kids that spent a lot of time in the pool, you'd want to be close in case they got in trouble in the water. Other than that I don't see why anyone would want to be right next to the pool.

I've always wondered why they always arrange all the chairs/lounges around and looking at that puddle on the Lido deck.

Anyway I've never hogged a chair and usually go up one deck from Lido and flop down. No chair hogging up there and it's nice.

We're not interested with chairs on the Lido. We do, however, love the Serenity deck. In our experience, the hogging there doesn't seem to be as bad.

Enjoy your cruise

PRECISELY! And on Carnival what you get by the pool is LOUD music, LOUD talking, and screaming (and splashing) kids. More power to ya if that's your thing. But dear God, I'd rather be anywhere but there on a cruise! Give me quiet, the sound of the waves as the ship cuts through the water and a good book, and I am happy as a clam :)

Years ago, when we traveled with a larger group and all wanted to be together - we WOULD send out one person early morning to "tie chairs off." That being said, everyone was in their chair within 20 minutes from being secured. We did this primarily to avoid the actual chair hogs that reserve seating and then show up 2 hours later. I do hold DH's chair when he goes to grab lunch or ice cream or another drink from our BV bottle.

I did witness (and was heartbroken) on my latest Dream cruise. A young couple with a baby had been out early in the morning and secured 2 lounge chairs with their baby's stroller in between. They took the baby down to the pool very briefly (maybe 15 minutes) together. When they returned, a couple of young DRUNK men had taken their stuff and put it all in the stroller and moved it and taken their chairs. These idiot young men would NOT move when the husband asked them to. Security got involved and for once, I saw security enforce the "chair hog" rule; but the wrong way - I felt so sorry for the young parents. Even to the point that I went over to security and explained that I had witnessed the entire situation and the young couple had not vacated their chairs for more than 15-20 minutes max by cooling off in the pool. Security wouldn't budge and allowed the drunks to remain in the chairs. Those men definitely SHOULD have felt ashamed!

Well there in lies the problem. When you NEED them to enforce the chair hog rules, they feign ignorance. When they really have no need to enforce them, as in this case, they are all over it. Ridiculous.

Our 1st cruise was a Disney cruise in 2007 with my MIL and FIL (who had cruised many times before). My MIL told me that if we wanted to have chairs by the pool, that one of us needed to get up super early and take all our towels out to reserve our chairs for later. I thought "well I'm not getting up super early". My MIL and FIL (being Irish) did not want chairs by the pool and my DH (being Irish) is not much for the sun either...much to my dismay as I like lounging in the sun (on a beach or a cruise ship). We never did get up early to reserve our chairs and spent most of our time sitting at a table under the overhang near the windows while my kids used the pool or played ping pong (they were 7,7 and 9 on that cruise and used the pool/slide/ping pong a lot). I could keep an eye on them from our table and my FIL could eat...a lot. But, if my kids were toddlers...I would have wanted a chair right by the pool.

On our CCL cruises, we still will sit at a table under the overhang while the kids swim. But now the kids don't spend too much time in the pool/slide (and I've never gotten in a pool on a cruise)...so we aren't out there too much. When we cruise w/out the kids, I like to use the Serenity deck...but will have to do so by myself most of the time as DH is not into it. I usually get in the hot tub for about 20 minutes and head back to the cabin. If I can find a chair, I'll sit and read or watch the ocean for about an hour and then head back to the cabin. Serenity chairs do get hogged as do the hot tubs...so there have been times when I've walked out there and turned around and left because it was so packed. On the Glory to Canada, I managed to squeeze into the Serenity hot tub for about 15 minutes and that was it. My girls would squeeze into the Lido hot tubs at night and watch a movie under the stars. The best was when DH and I were on the Fascination last year and we were in Nassau...for the 3rd time...we didn't get off the ship, but sat on the Serenity deck and enjoyed a hot tub all to ourselves.

On that Fascination cruise, DH did not want to see the adult comedy show one night and I did. I went about 25 minutes early, by myself, and sat down near the front. The entire front row had sweaters and jackets saving chairs (some were draped over 2 chairs) and there was 1 couple sitting there who would turn folks away that came up and tried to take the seats. They said they were for their friends who were in the casino. 2 couples strolled in before the show and like 6 seats were still empty. About 10 minutes into the show another couple strolled in, but 4 seats went unused. Meanwhile some folks left because there was nowhere to sit or they were standing in the back. RUDE!!!!!

My upcoming cruise will be a very different experience as I'm leaving the kids AND DH at home and am cruising with my mom. She likes to lounge in the sun too. We will be spending a lot of time in the Serenity area. I wonder what time the Serenity chairs will fill up on the Pride. I was reading another thread that said to get out there at 5 am if you want a clamshell or hammock. What about just 2 loungers?

I don't consider a chair hog to be a person that leaves their chair just to eat or go to the restroom. You have to SAVE your chair so that the chair hogs don't snatch it up, LOL. My definition of a chair hog is a person who saves several chairs all day "in case" their friends show up.
