Halifax excursion recommnedations

Anyone have newer recommendations that the ones from last summer?

 

Going July 7-14 on Canada/New England cruise.

 

Looking for recommendations for tours in Halifax. Or is it a place where we can get a lot in with walking?

 

Peggy Cove sounds interesting. Is there a way to book excursion to Peggy Cove without booking through the cruise ship?

We used shoretrips dot com when we went a couple of years ago and had a really good time. They took about 8 people in a small van. We stopped in the Titanic cemetary on the way. I think Peggy's Cove is one of the most beautiful little places we've ever seen.

Since there have not been cruises to Halifax since last October, you will have to wait for new reviews.

 

Halifax is very easy to do on your own. There is lots on the waterfront plus the Citadel and the Public Gardens.

 

If you wish to go to Peggys Cove, you can rent a car, hire a taxi, or preplan and hire a driver. It would cost less if you get together with others via your Roll Call.

How much would you recommend a trip to Peggy's Cove or Lunenberg? I checked out several books from the library and there seems to be a day's worth of touring just in Halifax itself. I don't like to spend too much on excursions and if the town is worth exploring on it's own, I might come back on another cruise and take the excursions next time.

 

If Peggy's Cove or Lunenberg are worth the excursion, should I book ahead?

Interested in that answer as well. We were planning on renting a car and driving to Lunnenberg and taking the scenic way to Peggy's Cove before heading back to the ship. there is 5 of us going so the cost savings were huge doing it this way.

Anyone know about Ambassatours? Found out about them from the book I was reading. They have a Peggy's Cove tour, 3 hours long, for $45.50 for adults (senior discount and child discount too it looks like).

Peggy's Cove is very nice in good weather and if you get there early (before the busses). Later in the morning you'll probably have at least five or six busses of tourists wandering around the small village. Then they all adjourne to a large restaurant for an overpriced lunch. This whole deal will kill a good part of the day.

 

You will be in Halifax during the jazz festival. They may have some events during the day if you're into that. Halifax is very walkable. The ship lets you off at the end of the boardwalk which runs along the waterfront from the end of the city to Casino Nova Scotia and the historic district. If you're mobil, there's no problem walking it. The boardwalk includes a number of tourist attractions, excursion ships, a major museum and places to eat. If you want to walk up the hill into town, you can get to the Public Gardens, the Citidal and shopping. There is also a duck tour that takes you all over town and is usually great fun. If you like beer, there are supposedly more bars per resident than any other city in North America. I especially like Maxwells Plum on Grafton Street with 60 beers on tap and 90 others in bottles. Alexander Keith's Brewery on Lower Water Street does touristy tours (for a price) and has a pub. When you exit the ship, there is usually a tourist information booth in the terminal which tells you everything you need to know.

If you have never been to Halifax before, do the city first. Generally the fog rolls in at Peggy's Cove sometime during the day and then you can't see anything. Halifax is a nice city just to wander around on your own. If you have been before, rent a car and do it yourself.

There is more than enough to see and do in Halifax for a day. It gets high ratings as a cruise port because it is so easy to walk off the ship and explore on your own.

 

That is taking nothing away from Lunenburg and Peggys Cove. The problem with the latter is the huge crowds when the ships are in and everyone is there at the same time. If you do want to go there some time, it is best to rent a car and go either as soon or as late as you can.

This web site will give you places to visit. Just click on what you are interested in, in the search box. Places listed in Dartmouth can be gotten to by the ferry which goes over there. The ferry pier is listed on maps and it is not very far from where the ship docks. Otherwise, you will see there is a lot to see right in Halifax.

How can I find more info about the Jazz Festival? I'd be interested in it if there are activities while we are in town. Do I need to buy tickets in advance?

We have been three times to Halifax, once via cruise ship. Once we rented a car and drove to Peggy's Cove and Lunenburg. The time we cruised,we visited the Maritime Museum just a couple of blocks from the cruise terminal ( excellent!). We walked up to the Citadel, and through the public gardens. We shopped in the historic properties, did a brewery tour. We ate lunch ashore and had a fantastic lobster roll. I bought some cute earrings right at the cruise terminal. This is an extrememly easy city to walk around and explore. Enjoy your time here, and plan on returning. The people are so friendly and helpful!

Google Tom's port guides there is a really good pdf on Halifax and other ports in Canada. Gives you a lot of details on how to do it yourself.

If you do not want to rent a car, they also have a hoho(hop on-hop off) Bus that you can ride. I am going this fall and booked a peggy cove tour that included the use of a hoho bus. That way, I can easly get to Peggy's cove and then go on my own.

I mentioned in an earlier post we took a taxi tour depending on how long you want to spend at each spot and whether you want to stop for full lunch etc it's usually around 5 hours for Cemetary and Peggy's Cove and then could be dropped at Maritime Museum which is 10mins stroll from the Pier. I noticed you are in port from 9.0 am to 18.30pm so you have more than enough time not rushed.

 

We went with Halifax Cruise Ship Taxi Tours and they tailored to our interests also could get another couple to split costs most vans are 6 seaters?? Hope this is helpful and you have a great visit.

Thank you for your response. It was very helpful. I am trying to get a few couples together from our sailing to split the costs. The ship's tour could not allow for much time if it is 3.5 hours! I would like to spend some time in each place as I have wanted to see these areas for some time.
