No tax when out to sea, but what about

When in International waters, 12 miles out.

So if you buy a wine package when already outside the 12 mile limit it would be cheaper than buying it via Carnivals bonvoyage system?

Or can the package only be bought ahead of sailing?

Bring on a bottle per person to hold you over. Can you buy the wine package anytime?

I'll have my 1 bottle in the cabin, SIL and I will split a wine package. I know we've bought the package on the 2nd day before but not sure how long they sell it. I tend to think they'll take your money if you want to buy one :D

I would think they wouldn't be able to charge a state sales tax once you've left the jurisdiction of the state, whatever that is. I know that when we sail out of Baltimore it takes forever to reach the ocean but they stop charging sales tax once the ship passes under the Key bridge (well, I don't know it but I've read it on here and will confirm it in October:)).

buying a wine package when you sail out of NOLA? Since we won't be 'out to sea' for several hours, when do they quit charging tax??? Saving my pennies toward more DODs!

This is not directed at you in particular, but it amazes me that people pay thousands of dollars for a cruise and yet worry about an extra $5 - $6 dollars on the S&S bill.

In a way, it's no different than when you buy things when on a land based vacation. If you know what the price for an item is (such as wine or liquor) "back at home", then you're reluctant to pay more for it when on vacation, and might check at different stores to find the lowest price. On a cruise, you only have one place to buy wine or liquor, and it may be more than what you're used to paying. At least if someone can get their wine or liquor duty-free, it somewhat eases the "sticker shock". Why do you think there are numerous posts about rum-runners and smuggling booze? It's just the way some people are.

So can you buy a wine package to drink in your cabin "tax free" outside the 12 mile limit?

I thought tax free booze was held and only given back before disembarkation.

If you are buying duty free out of the shops, it is held. If you are buying their marked up wine and bon voyage alcohol you are good.

I didn't spend thousands on a 5 day cruise - it's pretty cheap for just me, under $500. This was a spur of the moment idea we came up with - my SIL and I are going so our moms can cruise for the first time, maybe their only times. This is not a main vacation for me, just a quick get-away and I'm trying to make it as cheap as possible (on a teacher's salary). No pricey excursions, just beach days. So saving the tax on the wine package is one more DOD for me! Will it ruin my vacation if I have to pay the tax? Heck no, but why not save where I can?

I know what you mean. If I can save a few pennies I will. With the price of a wine package around $100, saving $10 looks god to me.

The easiest way to tell you are in International Waters is when the shops and casino open.

Actually I had a cruise turn into a cruise from nowhere and found out if you dont go to a port, no customs .. but they did charge tax in the duty free shop for liquor or everything else. I bought some deoderant (forgot mine) and was surprised .. I think tax was 7%?

Even the CD didnt know the rules when I ran into him and asked.

Yes but is the already marked up wine package cheaper to buy outside the 12 mile limit because it is free from tax or the same price as it is bought before hand via Bon voyage.

I am thinking its the same price regardless of where you are in the sea otherwise they would sell you duty free spirts to consume in cabin as well as duty free wine?
