ddgleason Posted March 19, 2012 #51 Share Posted March 19, 2012 I wouldn't suggest that adults can't act up at times, but, I was unexpectedly on a cruise with 1000 kids on the Voyager (I think). Many of the parents just let them run wild, and they did, all over the ship. If you haven't seen this, then, consider yourself lucky. Just out of curiosity, was this during a school break? Like Thanksgiving? While I do agree that children should be supervised and allowing them to run wild is NEVER appropriate, I also understand that if I want a quieter, more adult oriented vacation, I should not book during obvious vacation times from schools. Like major holidays. Please do not paint all families with the same brush. OP was very clear about staying together during the times she had asked about. I don't think this thread is at all about parenting. She asked a very specific question, and she has gotten some valid responses that will help her to plan the best family vacation for her group. There is no reason to even bring up previous experiences about kids gone wild or how late is OK for kids to stay up.
sazzifrazz Posted March 19, 2012 #52 Share Posted March 19, 2012 Jeez...this got ugly quickly. I am paying just as much for my child to cruise as I am for myself. This is just as much their vacation and if they are up past 10pm i don't see why other cruisers should be upset. My son is 6 and I doubt he will make it past 10 or 11 most nights but if he was it really shouldn't be a problem for other passengers. I wouldn't let him run wild at 10am...or 10pm. I wouldn't have him in adults only areas, or even at adult centered events (like comedy). This cruise line caters to families (thus the kids clubs, arcade, flo riders etc) so i would think anyone on board would have to be willing to deal with kids in their presence even late at night. It was Presidents Day, which, as we now know, is a week long break on the east coast. I agree that people wanting fewer children should book when children can't. (We try to) Unfortunately, at least in the US, there's no standard schedule of when the breaks take place.

Not that hard to do. Couple weeks in January, most of February, most of April, most of May, most of September, most of October, most of November and a couple of weeks in December should give you a very high majority of adult cruisers. mark290 Posted March 19, 2012 #61 Share Posted March 19, 2012 BTW - You might want to add March as well. That's Spring break for Many US colleges. I listed the dates you are most likely NOT to find children on a cruise. March would not fit that description. As you can see there are plenty of times during the year when you could sail virtually kid free plus it is much less expensive to cruise when schools are in session. Those of us who like to travel with our school age children pay sometimes as much as twice the price for the privilege.

sazzifrazz Posted March 19, 2012 #63 Share Posted March 19, 2012 DH and I are both teachers, so all of our vacations are during times that kids are rampant. It would be nice to be able to vacation whenever we wanted. Airfare and cruises cost so much more during school vaca weeks!

jt'scruisinmom Posted March 19, 2012 #67 Share Posted March 19, 2012 Boaring Allure on the 25th and I was just wondering what is there available to do with the kids after the kids club close at 10PM? Are the pools and hot tubs still open if they don't feel like going to bed right away? Is the ice skating rink or anything else open late for us to all do together? Thanks! I'm not sure about the Allure, but when we've cruised, we sometimes go up to the miniature golf course late at night. I'm sure on a ship the size of the Allure there will be lots for a family to do at night. Have fun and don't let the "haters" ruin the precruise excitement.:)

earn Posted March 20, 2012 #69 Share Posted March 20, 2012 I am shocked by this thread. Since when did children become a source of irritation rather than a joy to have around? I love my boys, love being with them and love their company. We only have them with us for such a short time before they fly the nest. We should savour every moment and that includes after 10pm if that is good for you. I can't imagine going on holiday without my kids, until the point when they don't want to go on holiday with me, which will be all too quick in coming. dz9yvr Posted March 20, 2012 #70 Share Posted March 20, 2012 I am shocked by this thread. Since when did children become a source of irritation rather than a joy to have around? Children become an irritation when their parents let them roam around the ship unsupervised 24/7. If parents allow their children to roam the ship unsupervised, they need to be old enough to understand that there are different rules and expectaions in the Windjammer or DL than on the pool deck. It's a fact that some parents don't teach their children the difference and the rest of us suffer.

earn Posted March 20, 2012 #72 Share Posted March 20, 2012 I would whole heartedly agree with all of that, but this post is about what children can do with their parents after 10pm, not what they can do by themselves roaming wild.

Hey, if the OP is trying to figure out what to do with young children late at night, who am I to try and steer him or her in the right direction? Those kids don't have a chance! LOL! When we started crusing DH and I thought it would be great family time...NOT our kids beg to go to the children's program and we don't see them until we MAKE them leave with us for at least dinner together. We make them go on shore with us in ports but if we arrive to a port in the afternoon (they will spend their morning in the kid's program) and on sea days you can almost bet they will be there. Last cruise they were 4, 4, and 7 and preferred being there to the pools
