I have seen several posts about this sad incident over the last couple days here on CC, and just happened to come across a news bit on CNN about it, where the cruise line (Princess) regrets what happened & indicates a breakdown in communication where the captain nor watch officer were ever notified.

Meh,, i have to assume the carnival peeps story that they thought they were waiving at them for staying out of their fishing nets. They cant stop at every boat that is waiving at them. This shows you a radio is a necessity at Sea

There was another version of the story where Carnival said they contacted the boat.

also wasn't there a thread about this yesterday? Did they delete it?

More sensationalized media reporting--not in this CNN story but the CBS story. I know all the cruse lines stop and try and help mariners in distress when they are aware of the problem but sometimes communication breakdowns occur--unfortunate--but it happens--and of course that is the kind of story that makes all the news. Disappointing but expected.

If I'm not mistaken, that article is a bit misleading. Carnival Cruise Lines has nothing to do with this incident as it was a Princess Cruise ship that mucked up - aren't they are a wholly owned subsidiary of Carnival Corporation and the two lines have nothing to do with each other??

these silly arguments reminds me when ncla was launched and failed miserably. people would say ncl, and were corrected that it was ncla. like it made a difference.

none of this will bring back the two lives that were lost. and carnival corp down to the lines had better rework their communication process quickly. it stinks.

We were on the Glory when it was fairly new and we stopped to give aid to a small cuban vessel, basically they needed to be fished out of the sea!!! It was a proud moment for the Captain and it was announced at dinner the next night.

I think maybe it was more a Captains call than anything.

Maybe I'm wishwashy but I don't think anyone would just leave people to drown, I am pretty sure they really believed the boat was not in distress.

now, who got credit? the captain? the glory? carnival cruise lines? carnival corporation. kudos go gracefeully up the line, without challenge.

criticizm just seems to stop where it starts. and raising it brings on challenge. go figure.

I know what you mean, but the CBC article said it was a Carnival Cruise ship when it wasn't - it was Princess They are owned by the same corporation but operate independent of each other.

I agree that none of this will bring back the two lives lost but it was Princess Cruise Line's communication process that failed, not the corporation's and ultimately it was the captain's decision that doomed the fishermen despite maritime law trumping all else

Sorta like people coming onto the Carnival forum and bashing CCL but in the same breath say how great HAL is - never mind that they have the same parent company

But I digress - thoughts and prayers to the two young men who perished

But....wonder why someone didn't question why such a tiny boat was like, 150 miles away from the nearest port.......

it's symantics. yes, us know-it-alls know it's different, but when carnival is mentioned, it's the "lay" people that fill in the rest in their minds and then in their typed words.

i excuse their ignorance.
