Spending 3 nights pre-cruise in Barcelona Oct. 23-26. Would like some recommendations for moderately priced hotels, thanks.

We just came back from Barcelona and spent 4 nights at the Hotel Jazz. Helpful staff, just off the main area and very close to public transportation.

The best "deal" in Barcelona is the Hotel Continental:

http://www.hotelcontinental.com/web/

Not exactly your standard five-star hotel...

It's sort of a funky old hotel...the rooms are small--but "large enough"...

TVs are small, there's plastic furniture and god-awful pink decor...

The lobby is on the third floor of a building that it shares with several other uses...

The rooms are on several floors and you must ring in and out of each floor in the elevator lobby as the front desk watches on closed circuit TV...(actually great security--they watch everyone who gets on and off the elevator and you don't get into the hotel unless they know who you are.)

OTOH,

THE LOCATION IS, QUITE SIMPLY, THE BEST IN BARCELONA...

It is right on Las Ramblas, just steps from the Placa Catalunya (the Placa is the hub of everything in Barcelona--transportation systems, restaurants, nightlife and the great El Corte Ingles Departm, ent Store with its wonderful supermarket in the basement)...walking distance from most of the tourist attractions...

There is a 24 hour free buffet which includes everything from Beer and Wine (all gratis) to Ice Cream...

Free Internet...

We had a Las Ramblas view balcony room...incredible view right out and over Las Ramblas--with all of the nightlife and street traffic...Each night, we grabbed some wine and/or beer from the buffet (okay, it's not great wine, but it's free) and headed out to our balcony...

Then, there is a great automated window shade and soundproofing system that shuts out all of that Las Ramblas noise and light when you want to go to sleep...

The room rates are VERY affordable...currently starting at €92 per night...€122 per night for a Las Ramblas View Balcony.

This hotel is not for everyone...If you only feel comfortable in a modern five star American style hotel, this is not it...

But, if you want an outstanding location and a great deal...and are willing to experience something a bit different...this could be it...

We are staying for 4 nights similar dates - Oct. 26-30th and found the prices at that time to be high. So it depends on what you want to pay.

After lots of help from the Trip Advisor forum, we decided to concentrate around Placa Catalyuna as it's so easy to get to from the aerobus as well as close to sights and restaurants. We were looking for somewhere that we could easily go back to for a mid day rest if we felt the need.

We found that many of the better deals were non refundable and just don't feel comfortable making that commitment this early.

We finally decided to book the Onix Rambla (146Euro a night) which certainly doesn;t look like the most luxurious but I believe will meet our needs. Closer to our departure date we may cancel and book the NH Calderon which is next door to the Onix and had a non cancellable rate of 163 euros. If you go the booking.com you can get a general idea of rates for your time period.

Hope this helps

We're just back from Barcelona and stayed at the Continental because of its great location. Yes, the rooms are small and funky, but it was nice to come back anytime and rest with a decaf cappucino or glass of white wine, just to rejuvenate. And if you use the Rick Steves guidebook, you will get 5% off your bill, just be showing the book. I was trying to get to my wallet in my purse and took out his Barcelona Snapshots book and laid it on the counter, and was then told about the surprise discount. The staff are very helpful, giving out maps, drawing walking routes, and providing discount coupons for at least one of the two HOHO bus companies. And the WIFI worked well with our Netbook, allowing us to Skype our daughter, but there are also several hotel computers to use, and they will print out your boarding passes for you. Would stay there again, just for the location, but price, staff, WIFI and buffet are important, too. Marlene

We have stayed at the NH Hotels NH BARCELONA CENTRO. (old name - Duc de la Victoria) several times and have always enjoyed it. It is two blocks off the Las Ramblas in the Gothic Quarter. Great price, Very friendly and helpful staff, very clean. We are staying there post cruise again in June. Enjoy Barcelona, its a great city.

This thread is always funny.. every time someone asks for rec. of Barcelona hotel the same guys answer.. me included..:D

and again my vote goes to Hotel Colon. Have stayed here so many times and will again pre-cruise in June.

It is wonderful. LOCATION LOCATION..not on Las Ramblas..better because it is a side street right off it and across from the cathedral on a street that no cars can drive on..lots of outdoors cafes , mimes etc. Excellent service. Request a room w/ cathedral view.

Me, too! :) We enjoyed the Regencia Colon, owned by the Colon, right behind it, using the same staff, same linens, etc. If you get a front room at the Colon you'll have a view of the Cathedral -- if you get any other view, it might be the Regencia! Our room at the Regencia was on the corner, so we had a glimpse of the Cathedral from our window. The rooms were adequately sized, clean, quiet, enjoyed the same location within feet, and were priced considerably less than the Colon! That's the Colon on the right of the 2nd photo.

But, the next time we stay at a hotel in Barcelona, I think we'll try the Continental -- Bruin Steve and others have convinced me! We love Las Ramblas, think the idea of the wine and beer buffet is neat, and don't mind small, funky rooms -- in fact, those are the most memorable!

Stayed there for three nights two years ago and returning this October: fabulous location, the largest room I have had in Europe, wood floors, small pool on roof, free computers downstairs, room available at 9:30 AM right after disembarkation, and wonderfully modern and clean.

We stayed in the Casa Camper - 3 minutes from Las Ramblas - very different and quirky. You get a bedroom and right across the hall, a sitting room with a hammock !! Very funky modern decor. Free snacks and drinks in the main foyer and a decent free breakfast. This is not your average Barcelona hotel, but fun for a night or two.

We look forward to our Hotel Continental stay very shortly. We have been

VERY pleased with them! When you go there keep in mind that you walk into the lobby and take the elevator up one floor to check in.

I would suggest you NOT stay at the "Tryp Apolo" which is very near the Port. The price was decent, but the hotel was pretty run down and dirty.

The window in our room would not close and we heard the noise from the Casino and traffic all night long.

The front desk was very uninterested.

Another vote for the Hotel Jazz! Not only was the room modern, spacious, and clean, but the morning breakfast was excellent, and the location was just about perfect. The hotel staff is extraordinarily helpful. When we disembarked, we discovered that someone had taken the taxi that we had prepaid, so we had to pay for another taxi. The desk staff at the Hotel Jazz made numerous calls on our behalf over a period of three days until they succeeded in getting our money refunded. It was almost as if it was a personal challenge to them. You can't find better service.

On another note: We learned from the taxi experience that we had grossly overpaid for the transportation. We hired the service with the help of the Concierge on the ship. I'm not blaming him. The name of the company was the first one he found when he Googled it. We had prepaid 58 euro when the the ride should have been about 35 euro or less.

If you use the Concierge on the ship to help you book anything, always ask for more than one price. Several times on this trip we arranged for private excursions with another couple, and the first prices the Concierge found for us on the Internet were always too high. Again, I'm not blaming the Concierge. It seemed it was how the services were listed.

Another good idea is just to arrange these private excursions before you go...which is what so many of us do..and not rely on the ships people to hire someone for you.
