bleacher Posted May 9, 2012 #1 Share Posted May 9, 2012 Cruising to Alaska June 2 2012. Do you need insect repelant for shore excursions?
donaldsc Posted May 9, 2012 #2 Share Posted May 9, 2012 Yes and the stronger the better. We use 100% deet as recommended by people who live there. DON
Putterdude Posted May 10, 2012 #3 Share Posted May 10, 2012 I have never had to use insect repellent in coastal Alaska but if going inland on an excursion it is not a bad idea to carry some. WalMart usually has two brands of 100% DEET repellent in small plastic pump bottles in their camping supplies area....just don't lick you fingers after applying it.;)
Rare Keith1010 Posted May 10, 2012 #4 Share Posted May 10, 2012 I've never had to use the repellent in Alaska. What types of tours are you taking? Keith
deladypilot Posted May 10, 2012 #5 Share Posted May 10, 2012 I was there last year and never needed it. That being said, I think it depends on your excursions.
Krazy Kruizers Posted May 10, 2012 #6 Share Posted May 10, 2012 We have been to Alaska quite a few times. Have never had to use it -- but I do take along Deep Woods Off.
2theship Posted May 10, 2012 #7 Share Posted May 10, 2012 It also depends on you. Personally, I would not go near Alaska (or my daughter's summer camp) without insect repellent. My husband does not care - all the bugs go right past him and head straight for me. You know what the state bird of Alaska is, don't you? The mosquito! oratheeexplorer Posted May 10, 2012 #8 Share Posted May 10, 2012 I just bought a box of the Deep Woods Off towelettes....there are 20 individually wrapped towelettes in the box.....25% deet.....I'm not crazy about using 100%, I wouldn't think that would be good for you.... Hoyaheel Posted May 10, 2012 #9 Share Posted May 10, 2012 It also depends on you. Personally, I would not go near Alaska (or my daughter's summer camp) without insect repellent. My husband does not care - all the bugs go right past him and head straight for me. You know what the state bird of Alaska is, don't you? The mosquito! Same situation for me:D Mosquitoes will bite me in situations where NO ONE else sees or feels them. We did a fair bit of hiking on our last trip to Alaska (and inland too, Fairbanks and Delta Junction where we were visiting family) and definitely brought DEET with us and used it. For trips to Alaska, or tropical regions with endemic malaria or other disease, I will use 100% DEET. In my daily life, where mosquitoes don't typically carry diseases like malaria or dengue, I use a much lower concentration of DEET. Mosquito is also the state bird of Maine and Minnesota, right? :p
