Well if RCCL backs out the port charges for solo they must have forgotten to do that on my cruise on the Mariner in April.

But the bottom line is I look for the bottom line when cruising - solo or with friends or family before I book.

I assure you that you only paid 1 port charge and 1 tax.

I assure you I only paid 1 tax but my fare was 200% so I know I paid 2 port charges. You have no idea what I paid so you do not have to assure me what I paid.

how do you know the extra money you paid was for port charges. i bet if you do a fake booking for 2 people you will see the port charges are different than what you were charged. they are adding on the extra amount in the cost of the cabin. i know that for a fact. but you are right i dont know what you paid and i dont care but you are wrong in the assumption you were charged for pot charges twice. if i am not mistaken that is against the law.

On Carnival you do pay 200% plus 1 person's tax

On Royal Caribbean, you don't

You pay 200 % too most of the time, but with RCL, it wind's up being less because they only charge for 1 port tax and 1 tax.

Here's an example

Monarch of the Seas on July 27th

cost for 2 in cat N cabin is $379 + $379 + tax $75.72 + $75.72 =$909.44

cost for 1 in cat N cabin is $668 ($90 less than double) + tax $75.72 = $743.72

you can see that the cost for 1 is not double because the single was not charged the $90 port tax.

This was only a 3 night cruise. That port charge can be over $200 for long cruises

Hmmmmm, service dogs? Do you think they would believe my 7 lb Chiweenie is my "emotional therapy" dog? I hate leaving him but would never think of cruising with him. LOL

We actually ran into something like that on a Carnival cruise. A small lap dog of some kind, in a baby stroller, in the MDR, sitting next to us. The owner even took him out and sat him on the seat. Said she had "papers" stating he was a service dog.

yeah, right.

Another solo cruiser here who was dismayed when Carnival no longer offered us the 150% 1A cabins. That said, generally Carnival's fares are lower to start with, so even paying double, it's still less than other lines.

I'm just sucking it up.

They're absolutely right, too, Roz. . . and I'm sucking it up, also. :D

I've got a cruiser friend that I go with now, but that also opens up the "financial horizon" for a lot of other cruise lines.

Life is too short for you guys to spend so much of it quibbling about such minor issues and getting yourself involved in "tinkling" contests. Lighten up, and spend that time day-dreaming about how great your next cruise is going to be. :)

What nonna is trying to say is, with Carnival the port charges are in the booking price that is quoted . . . double that price and you're paying double for port charges. Carnival does take off one set of "government fees and taxes", however, which is no-way comes close to the port charges.

My guess [operative word] is Carnival is still charged a port fee for the berth that goes empty on SOLO cruisers, so they pass that charge on.

Baloney back.

As you know, when you see the price for a cruise (all cruises) there is a part of that that is the port charge or non commissionable. It's often up to $200 pp of that price on a 7 nighter

See for yourself

take any Carnival cruise on your favorite TA website and price a cabin for 2. Now price the same cabin for 1.

You'll see the only difference for the price is that the total for 1 is less by the amount of tax.

Now do the same for a Royal Caribbean cruise

You'll see that the price for a single is much more less than the tax amount for 1. The reason being is that you are not being charged the non commissionable (port) part of the fare you see.

Same on Celebrity

Absolutely DEAD ON correct.

if you think the difference in the cost of cruises is a minor issue

''horrayy '' for you having so much money too throw away. you are the one '' tinkling '' your money away by not seeing our concern. but your money is yours and ours is ours. so lets just leave it at that ok

Haha. I have a 100 lb lab and I am always thinking how much she would love to cruise. Between the food and the pool, she would have a blast. If I could figure out a way to stuff her in my suitcase, I would.

What I find too funny is how so many whine about cruise line cutbacks and nickel and diming and then they do the reverse. Penny pinching for the cheapest cruise they can find. Hmmm. Which came first?

In any event, I don't understand why the singles are whining so much. I don't cruise single and still have to pay for two in a cabin and two S&S cards and pretty much double everything, yet I only have 1/2 a cabin (usually less). I want compensation!

TRUE!

When DW and I cruise together it's always Premium Balconies or

MiniSuites or Hump Balconies or Aft Cabins...7 or 8 days...

at peak school vacation prices! Wine package, Steak House,

excursions, shopping.

$3.5k++.

So...anyway, when I manage to get away for a solo...I want cheap,

'God Bless America cheap'. I want that 150% Carnival 1A again.

Solo, I want those low, deck 2 aft, cheap, upper/lower bunk cabins...

the ones with the prop shaft going through the walls

and the rudder shaft going down through the closet...you know, those.

Those are the cabins I dream about!

:D:D

As someone that sometimes does sail solo, I totally agree with you! I totally get why the pricing is the way it is. That said, my money, I'm going to shop around for the best deal for me.

Seeing threads like this is a shame, and I hope the cruise lines read them. Not everyone out there is in a relationship, or has an available roommate at all times. They need to get their act together when it comes to attracting single cruisers. NCL took a step in the right direction with the solo cabins on Epic, but there is a long way to go.

Also, I still think 150% over the regular fare is ridiculous (200% is highway robbery). They should have smaller private rooms available for singles at a small premium, maybe 10-20% above standard fare.

Now that is just crazy. You want them to spend millions redesigning ships so some singles won't be inconvenienced? If anything I think they could probably use more HC cabins but I have less than zero interest in subsidizing single cabin insanity. There are cruise lines and charters that specialize in singles. A mass market cruise line like Carnival is one size fits most.

Unless meals or something are included, hotels cost the same for one or two people. Taxis are usually per taxi, not per person. It is the same one size fits most and you have to pay to play.

For several of my cruises I had the same single supplement problem. But I have friends and relatives. So I invited people to go with me. I paid for the cruises, but someone went with me for free, basically. I have done this to Alaska, 14 days through the panama canal, 7 days in the Caribbean, and a 14 day Alaska cruise.

If you need a travel companion, I can split the cost with you, I am like you. Only in the room to sleep, shower and dress for dinner. Love those formal nights.

I've Just Returned, From The 5-05-12 Sailing On Carnivial Freedom!!! I Had A Great Time, But I Will NOT Be Sailing Carnivial In The Near Future!!!

I Sail Solo, And Carnivial Got Rid Of The Solo Supplement, And No Matter How Much Fun I Have... I Can't See Myself Paying A 200% Supplement To Sail Carnivial:eek:!!!

So Royal Caribbean, Princess, Norwegian, Look Out.. Here I Come!!!:p

Yeah, thats what I said. Until I cruised on the Monarch of the Sea in Feb. It cost just as much as Carnival even with the lower single suppliment and was a very disappointing cruise. The seats in the showroom were broken and uncomfortable to point that I could not watch the shows. They had no Comedy club. The Karaoke (which is very important to me) was almost nonexistent. The staff were unfriendly. The room was half the size of my carnival rooms with less storage space. The shower was so small that I could not turn around without the shower curtain sticking to my rear end. I thought maybe I was just remembering Carnival with nystalgia so I cruised on Carnival Triumph this month. I had an aft balcony for only a little more than I paid for the 114 sq foot inner room on the Monarch. The showrooms and entertainment were great. They had two evenings in which I drank free (the past passenger party and the "fun farewell") It was my 3rd cruise on RCCL and they didn't even remember to send me an invitation to the past passenger party! I have enjoyed cruises on the larger more expensive RCCL ships and Princess ships but not any more (actually less) than I enjoy cruises on Carnival and even with the single suppliment its still less money.

BUT, you will probably have to discover all this for yourself, so just book yourself one of those RCCL cruises with a low single suppliment and compare for yourself. Even if I must pay more I still enjoy Carnival more. Be sure to take into account the $30 the lobster in the specialty resturants will cost you as opposed to the free ones (I always order 2) that you get on Carnival in the main dining room. Oh and don't forget to bring your robe with you on that RCCL cruise. There won't be one in the room unless you have booked a $5000 suite.

Yes, Its the same for me unless I cruise with a friend instead of family. I cruise most often with one of my sisters. They are both school teachers and so are only free to cruise when school is out. (the most expensive time). I cruise solo in the winter when they are teaching. So really even with the solo supplement the cruise at the time I travel solo is MUCH cheaper for me since I pay for the entire room either way.

Sorry Jana but. I just went on the monarch and paid less then 400 ( 4 days) for an OV room and loved it..was my first RCL and first OV and not a balcony but heck it was cheap. Found most of the things in relation to the fascination equal (comparing 2 small older ships is only fair)

Sarge I am a big fan of your knowledge and site. But if carnival does not want me why do I keep getting the 25 percent off ,casino cash, free gifts, and free drinks....sure I. Am not subsidizing your cruises? Not to mention my shareholders OBC. Seems paying for two is far cheaper some cruises then what I gamble in a night.

Plus I get all the pillows ;)

Sure it's not the casino, drinks, dinners, pictures, excursions,,etc that are the majority of the income??? You should know?

It tend to think the room charge is gas money and everything else is what counts?
