momthecruisedirector Posted May 4, 2005 #1 Share Posted May 4, 2005 Are there wireless cafe's in the port cities? I don't think our cellphone will have service in Alaska and would like to check in with home at least once while we are gone. I've tried a web search but it gave me a headache - hoping a local can help me out!
wolfie11 Posted May 4, 2005 #2 Share Posted May 4, 2005 There are some cafes with internet service, but I don't have wireless, so I'm not sure, but you usually get a few minutes of internet access free with a coffee or for a nominal charge without. I know the library in Juneau has free internet access, and I think Skagway may, but don't know about Ketchikan.
CruiseIsGood Posted May 4, 2005 #3 Share Posted May 4, 2005 There are internet cafes in every port with large signs, if that's what you mean.
mommabean Posted May 4, 2005 #4 Share Posted May 4, 2005 You can just pay for internet access on the ship and check with home if you can't wait for port days. I would suspect that wireless access off ship isn't free and may even cost more.
DALSAL Posted May 4, 2005 #5 Share Posted May 4, 2005 someone said you could go to the library in Juneau by the pier for 30 min free time for checking email...

Rare tetleytea Posted May 4, 2005 #7 Share Posted May 4, 2005 Seward also has a public library w/ free internet access. But I don't think it's anywhere near big enough to handle the cruise crowds. We went there in the middle of the week (no ships in dock) and there was a line. It would be nice if these cafes had more wi-fi. You can't upload your digital camera photos on the libraries' machines.
tee_wrecks Posted May 4, 2005 #8 Share Posted May 4, 2005 Check this out. http://www.wififreespot.com/ According to this site there are free wifi access spots at the public libraries in Ketchikan and Juneau. No info on Skagway though I'm sure there is something there. Keep looking.

AK*Angel Posted May 4, 2005 #10 Share Posted May 4, 2005 There are about 5 locations within walking distance of the ships in Juneau, signs all over the place ;o)

mrdawson Posted May 5, 2005 #12 Share Posted May 5, 2005 Contrary to previous post, the internet cafes in Alaska are much cheaper than the ships..$5 for 30 min if I remember right. Mike

KenP Posted June 5, 2005 #14 Share Posted June 5, 2005 some Internet Cafe's I found useful May 2005: Juneau: public library on the top of the parking deck, 5 minute walk from pier. Free terminals and free wifi access. Nice view, check out the attached photo. Skagway: Alaska Cruise Ship services, on 2nd ave near main. $1 / 15 minutes. Ketchikan: Surf City Internet Cafe, 425 Water Street. $5/ 20 minutes. I only spent 20 minutes at each location. had I logged on from the ship it would have taken 3 times as long due to satellite latency, plus would have cost 10 times as much. andreaplants Posted June 5, 2005 #15 Share Posted June 5, 2005 we went to the library in juneau i think (can't remember which port but think it was juneau!! - must have been) - it was on the way back to the ship from the red dog - had to wait about 15 minutes then we had free internet for 30 minutes. Unless you have free internet b/c you've been with princess so long - it is very expensive on board. it was weird getting on the net in port - glad that I did b/c I'd forgotten to send something important-ish but almost wished I hadn't - too much of a reminder of "the real world." Of course, after the trip I now want to move to Anchorage! Ann
dfd22120 Posted June 5, 2005 #16 Share Posted June 5, 2005 When I was in Alaska in May I used Cybercafe http://www.seaportel.com/ They charge $5 per hour and have facilities at most ports so you can use the minutes you have left at other stops. Connection was alot faster and cheaper than on the ship.
Cruizer_J Posted June 5, 2005 #17 Share Posted June 5, 2005 Ditto dfd22120's experience, we used Seaport Cyber (Seaportel) in Ketchikan, Juneau and Skagway. As stated, $5 for an hour. Ketchikan and Juneau stores had around 25 pc's available as well as wireless and wired service for laptops. In Ketchikan with our ship having internet problems, a few people were able to pick up the store's wireless signal while sitting out on the ship's promenade deck with their laptops. The Skagway location that we visited only had 4 pc's.
Budget Queen Posted June 6, 2005 #18 Share Posted June 6, 2005 For information, all the libraries have internet access. All walkable without mobility limitations with Skagway's the farthest. :) Juneau is right at the dock, but the most busy.
