Summit review, 6/17-6/24, mixed

As late 30-somethings I am happy to hear your last two negatives as they will be positives for us. RCCL is a little TOO family oriented for us, we like quiet.

Glad to hear you enjoyed the food as well.

I was also on the 6/17 sailing of the Summit and have to disagree about the service. Every crew and staff member we encountered were wonderful and so pleasant to talk to. I thought the dining room service was fantastic; the best I have experienced. The bar staff was also great and very friendly.

On the other hand I do agree about the activities offered on the Summit. I am in my mid twenties and did not attend one activity during my cruise. Everything was geared towards an older crowd (40's-50's), even the music in the lounges. ( I could not take one more rendition of SWEET CAROLINE!)

I wish Celebrity would offer more things to do for 20-30 year olds because the ships are beautiful and the food and service is above par to other cruise lines.

Are you kidding me?! I'm 48, active, and way more fun than I was in my 20's....on our next cruise, we are hiking, climbing Gros Piton, snorkeling and maybe doing some mountain biking.... I suspect the difference is that with age, I learned to entertain myself and no longer need anyone to do it for me.

For the record, I am also NOT a Neil Diamond fan. He was actually before my time. I am more into Dave Matthews Band, Eric Clapton and jazz...

And that is the key to it all, is it not? The last two cruises we did the premium alcohol package but even on prior cruises I've found a decent tip or two at the outset will pay dividends in service and even a better pour and fun conversation. Works every time!

Although now and then you can arm wrestle for the tab also.

Lou! Your dirty scoundrel you. Where you been? We are sailing the Summit 12/1. Come join us!!

That is also why my husband and I are switching cruise lines because we do not want a family cruise and do not want to see shrek or other creatures.

I brought up that fact several months ago on the RCI boards and was blasted out of the water as a 'Hater'.

I prefer a quieter more sedate cruise line without all the amusement park 'bells and whistles'. And I don't need anyone to hold my hand with ideas on how to keep me busy on sea days. ;)

We were also on this sailing, one of our best cruises, cabin steward gave great attention to our room, wait service in MDR was exellent, our group of 14 had 6 teenagers, although the did not do much of the ships activities, I can say they didn't seem bored and always found something to do. The staff always greeted us when encountered. Cruise director Sue was awsome. The captain and staff greeted us at the Cruise Connections party with Sue hosting, we met many friends on this cruise. The martini bar was usually crowed, every night we met friends there, service was not too bad but they were always busy. Overall we had one heck of a vacation, certainly will sail Celebrity again.

I am 56 and want to hang out with you :). We have our Alaskan cruise so packed with excursions, plans to hang out on the balcony and deck for scenery that I doubt we will even look at the dailies. As long as I find the sunset bar and martini bar and casino that's all the entertainment I require ;).

AMEN! I don't think we've ever done a single "cruise activity", except the ones we happened to witness on the pool deck.

We are very much looking forward to enjoying our premium alcohol packages on our aft balcony :D

Thanks to the OP for an honest review. As I recall the weather was seasonal for your week.

Almost booked the July 1st cruise. By the looks of the weather glad I didn't

Oh thank you, just what I didn't need to see! Hopefully as we sail Sunday evening the worst of it will be past as we head south, and it heads north..... she says, optimistically!

We were on the same sailing and would have to agree about most of the bar service. It was impossible to get a drink at the martini bar most nights. It seemed as if they were understaffed and more interested in pouring multiple flights of martinis at once to show off - a process that takes quite a while.

The service at the sunset bar was also very spotty. Once they found out we had the premium drink package, it was impossible to get service regardless of what time of day it was.

However, the service and entertainment in Michaels Club every night was top notch. We wound up spending most of our evenings in there.

We were also on this same sailing and I have to agree with the information listed above in terms of lack of service at the martini bar.

I went to the martini bar to order a specialty martini with the plans to meet DH who was in Michael's Club having a beer and it took over 20 min to get waited on. DH thought I got lost. The bartender seemed annoyed there were people at the bar wanting a drink! It was very odd....

We ended up spending time at Michael's Club and received excellent service.

Other than the Martini bar's poor service - we found the rest of the staff on the entire ship very friendly, providing outstanding attention to detail and service.

SO what do all you fun lOvers suggest are fun things to do at sea? I know the gym us usually packed!!!

We had fun going in the hot tubs, swimming in the T-pool (outside pool was packed), walking the ship and taking in the views, sitting on our balcony, visiting with other passengers, checking out the shops and photo gallery, gambling in the casino - playing slots and learning how to play craps (which was a blast!), going to some of the guest speaker seminars, and of course sampling michael's pub, wine cellar, gelatoria, specialty coffee shop, hamburger cafe, sushi bar, etc!:)

It looks to me that Debbie will be well north of our course by the time we hit offshore.

Lois, have read many of your past posts. So sorry your sitting in the midst of Debbie's rain instead of sailing with us on Sunday. Hope you and your neighbors are OK. Also hope Debbie rushes further out into the Atlantic so we can have smooth seas.

I will be on the Summit with you on Sunday. I agree with you. I have looked at a couple of different sites' tracking systems and they all have Debby well North of us by Sunday afternoon, thankfully. Let's hope it stays that way.

Good news, the pic is a live link and NHC has sped the storm up considerably.

Looks like it'll be a tad rough but all in all a good trip

Have fun!

another thing we didn't quite understand is they moved cellar masters to where the martini bar was and the martini bar to a different deck..cellar masters was never busy and it's huge..set up nicely though..the martini bar..which I love was a small area and was packed for hours...with people standing..don't get it...we used to love going to the martini bar and sitting right by the area near the main dining room..having a cosmo..and getting up at 6 and going to the dining room...why do they do things like this??? anyone....any ideas..........

I have to agree with you. I loved the previous location of the Martini Bar and felt the space was a great asset. The new Martini Bar is so small.........and it is too brightly lit for my taste.......... I don't like to stand around and trip over people......... I don't know why they didn't make that area cellarmasters.......and keep the martini bar where it had been.......but just renovate the space...........

I don't think Celebrity is the best choice for teens. Even so, any teen who is bored on a cruise ship needs to go volunteer in the soup kitchen when they get home. That just makes my blood boil, and makes me sad at the same time.:( (climbing down off my soapbox now.)

Oh, miss, belle ... I've been a member of Cruise critic for ... well, a while. Having children the same age as the OP, I have to respond.

(1) Please don't assume that just because children are bored that they don't volunteer in a soup kitchen ... my children have been bored at times, and they have volunteered countless hours in many locations, including ... soup kitchens, food banks, and with the support services that go with them. These are not MUTUALLY exclusive events.

(2) Life sucks for a lot of people, even people who are fortunate enough to take a cruise every once in a while ... you have no idea what anyone has gone through recently or the hell they may be about to endure in the future ... why add to the challenges of life with your words?

(3) Even though life sucks ... if you pay for something, you should get what you paid for ... the reason why this board is even here (and I'm looking at it) is because we want to get a sense of differences and make an informed decision.

I appreciate the candor of the OP ... thank you for your insight and your basis of comparison. It has provided me with critical information to make an informed decision for my family, including our teens.
