Cabin Assignment

There have been second-hand reports of getting an initial assignment as late as at the pier, but I don't recall ever reading a first-hand report of one coming that late.

There was a recent report of initial assignment coming as close as 3-4 days before sailing. Most reports lately are in the 10-11 day range, with 7-14 days normal.

Of 8 gty's our earliest was 18 days out, our latest 3 days out, and the other 6 were at 11 or 10 days out. All were upgrades from what we paid for. On one of the 11-day assignments, we got a re-assignment and second upgrade at 3 days out.

I have never cruised before and will be on the Statendam August 12. :)

How do you receive your assignment? Email? Phone? Does it come from the TA or from Holland America?

Thank you.

We are 12 days from sailing and still waiting. Hopefully it will be soon, there are quite a few on our roll call that are GTY

Hi there NSC,

We're on the same cruise as you with a balcony GTY. Talked to res agent on Saturday; she said, 'your cabin assignment will be coming shortly." Upsell offers, on the other hand, have come, in our past experience, 10 days before sailing. Which would be...tomorrow!!

What is a GTY??

Sometimes you can book a room in a certain category a little cheaper if you agree to a gty assignment. Which means that the room will be assigned by the ship rather than you picking out your own cabin. If you have a particular room location/configuration you'd like, you shouldn't pick a gty cabin. When you pick a gty, sometimes you are moved up a category or two.

It isn't always available. And sometimes, even early on in the planning, on HAL they assign you as a gty. We didn't plan on a gty for our upcoming cruise. But it was all that was available. And.... we wanted the trip more than the particluar room choice. So it's not a big deal for us.
