Where to stay in Miami...near the airport or the port?

We are accompanying a large group for a family wedding taking place onboard the Reflection in February 2013. We are arriving the day before the cruise and want to find reasonably priced accommodations in Miami that would also be able to provide convenient transportation to the ship's pier. Does anyone have recommendations for lodging? Also, would you recommend staying near the airport or the port?

Thank you in advance for your suggestions!

I would suggest staying downtown. The Holiday Inn Port of Miami is reasonable for one. The cab fair is less than $10 to the ship. Plus you are right across the street from the Bayside Market Place. The place is on the waterfront with lots of shops and restaurants. Thats where ived stayed in Miami the last 4 cruises from there.

I second that suggestion. The Holiday Inn was in a good location within walking distance of some nice places and very near the port. We stayed there last October and it worked out very well.

I don't know about the Holiday Inn but we stay at the Hampton Inn Brickell, it is a good, rather new hotel in the Mary Brickell section of downtown Miami. There are lots of shops and restaurants in the area. The Hampton is reasonable and offers a shuttle to the port for eight dollars per person. We will be staying there in December prior to our Reflection cruise.

In April we stayed at the Holiday Inn Port of Miami. Great location, just across the street from Bayside Market and less than a block from the CVS pharmacy. Our room looked out towards the pier and we watched the ships arriving in the early morning....fantastic sight!

Our room was very clean and we had no negative issues at all and we would stay there again if we cruise out of Miami.

If you are arriving early enough to enjoy some of Miami, then stay near the port. If you will only have time to go to bed, just stay near the airport.....no sense in paying "shore" prices if you can't enjoy the area!

Cab from the airport to port is $24. Cab from Holiday Inn and surrounding hotels is about $10.

We stayed at South Beach pre-cruise for 3 days (our choice). Did some sightseeing, had beach time. The taxi to the cruise ship was around $20-25.

South Beach is a nice island, we felt safe walking around, and if mobility is an issue, there is a circular bus, and they sell daily passes.

Thanks for the suggestions. Sounds like downtown at the Holiday Inn or IC might be a good bet. Just a follow up question...are there free airport shuttles to these hotels?

Thanks to those of you who provided helpful input!

Looks like prices for the Intercontinental in Feb are over $300 a night in midweek. This is using a multi site search engine. Just because someone mentioned they got it for $130 or $150 etc doesn't mean it will be that in FEB.

We stayed at the Bayside Marriott a couple yrs ago. Bid on Priceline, pd less thn $100 per nite (usually about $300), had water views from 23rd floor, absolutely fabulous! This in early Feb., I believe.

We stayed at the Doubletree Biscayne Bay last Thanksgiving after our cruise. It was a quick taxi ride from the port (it's about a mile) and about $25 to the airport. Best thing was that they let us check in to our room when we arrived at 9 am! Granted, it was Thanksgiving Day so it was pretty quiet there.

The hotel has a bunch of shops on the main floor (small grocery & liquor store, clothing, jewellery, nail salon), a couple of small restaurants and a bar.
