Check on Cruise Critic

Yesterday DH and I were talking about the smoking policy on the Century. We had noticed our cabin was one deck up on the port side of the ship from what we thought was the deck where smoking was allowed. We tried to find the policy on the Celebrity website but it was just a general policy stating it was allowed in certain open areas on the ship. So, DH called Celebrity and asked specifically about the policy on the Century. He posed the question to the representative and after she put him on hold several times she finally asked him if he was familiar with Cruise Critic. He replied that he was. She then told him to check on Cruise Critic because it would probably be there. Ahh, the info to be gained from this board. That remark made us both laugh and it definitely made our day.

Hi Mprcruiser,

Thanks for sharing your story with us. Definitely my best laugh of the day !

All kidding aside, what the rep said was true, and IMO, a far better answer than making something up. I believe that CC members realize this is the best place to obtain accurate information. Nothing better than getting answers from folks who can share from past experiences.

OK, I'll bite. Nobody has actually said anything about the smoking policy on Century...

As found elsewhere and yes, it was about the comment from the Celebrity rep.

Designated indoor areas where passengers can smoke cigarettes include the port side of one lounge per ship and a designated slot machine area in each ship’s casino. Other outdoor areas include the port side of the pool deck and sundecks on each ship, the port side of the Sunset Bar on Celebrity Century and on Celebrity’s Millennium class of ships, and the port side aft outside of Winter Garden on Celebrity Galaxy and Celebrity Mercury. Cigar and pipe smoking is allowed only in specially designated sections of the open decks.

Smoking onboard the Celebrity Century

Smoking on the Celebrity Century is prohibited in all suites and staterooms including balconies. Smoking is allowed on the port side of the open decks. Most of the public areas are non smoking. Signs are posted at the designated smoking areas and if in doubt, ask a staff member about where smoking is permitted.

Celebrity Cruises

Where You Can Smoke: Cigarette smoking is only permitted in designated indoor and outdoor areas. Examples include the port side of the pool deck and sundecks on each ship; the port side of the Sunset Bar on Celebrity Century and on Celebrity's Millennium class of ships; and the port side, aft, outside of Winter Garden on Celebrity Galaxy and Celebrity Mercury.

Where You Can't: Smoking is prohibited in cabins and on balconies. Also, smoking is not permitted in any dining venue, casino, theater, hallway, elevator or corridor. On Celebrity's new Solstice, the Lawn Club and the Sunset Bar at the Lawn Club will not allow smoking.

Celebrity Cruises has announced that, beginning October 1, 2008, a no-smoking policy goes into effect in staterooms and verandas. Passengers who are caught smoking will find $250 added to their tab, a charge for cleaning the stateroom.

Designated indoor areas where guests can smoke cigarettes include the port side of one lounge per ship and a designated slot machine area in each ship’s casino. The new policy also designates outdoor areas where guests can smoke. These include the port side of the pool deck and sundecks on each ship, the port side of the Sunset Bar on Celebrity Century and on Celebrity’s Millennium class of ships, and the port side aft outside of Winter Garden on Celebrity Galaxy and Celebrity Mercury. Celebrity’s new Solstice class of ships, launching with Celebrity Solstice late this year, will follow the new policy beginning with the first sailing. Celebrity Solstice’s Lawn Club and the Sunset Bar at the Lawn Club will not allow smoking.

The new policy will go into effect on Celebrity’s fleet on the first day of the first sailing to follow October 1:

Celebrity Galaxy, Celebrity Infinity, Celebrity Mercury – October 3 sailings

Celebrity Summit – October 4 sailing

Celebrity Constellation – October 5 sailing

Celebrity Century, Celebrity Millennium – October 6 sailings

Celebrity Solstice, Celebrity Equinox – upon ship launch

All this looks like it is information from years ago and is badly outdated.

The Galaxy left the fleet 3 years ago.

The current policy is that there is no smoking anywhere indoors nor on stateroom verandas. There are a few limited outdoor smoking areas. The official policies do not designate these areas, which is why customer service might not have that information. Instead they indicate the areas will be designated on each ship so that the "official" locations are those designated in the smoking policy letter you receive on embarkation day. But from a practical standpoint these generally do not change frequently.

In recent times the smoking areas have included: An area on the port side of the outdoor area on the promenade deck of the ship, the pool bar, the port side of one of the aft bars, and an area on one side of the pool area and the deck above that. Most of these area are on the port side, with the exception being the outdoor mast bar on the S class ships which is on the starboard side. Pipe and cigar smoking are only allowed at the smoking area at one of the aft bars.

It is interesting to note that Celebrity's official smoking policies start out by saying their ships are designated as non-smoking but then go on to indicate that, despite this, certain outdoor areas are provided for smoking guests.

As the world changes and smoking is eliminated at more and more public areas worldwide, I wouldn't be surprised to see the number of smoking areas reduced in the future. So one should check on the current locations on embarkation for non-smokers to avoid and smokers to find for their habit.

Galaxy has been out of the fleet for over 3 years and Mercury over

2 years so much of that information is outdated.

"Celebrity Cruises has announced that, beginning October 1, 2008".......

I believe this date is the reason they have listed the Galaxy & Mercury. Still, you would think the "official" policy would be updated and could easily state that the policy was changed on October 1, 2008. Good old Celebrity! :D
