blazerjan Posted September 28, 2012 #1 Share Posted September 28, 2012 I think I know this ... but just to be sure. If I am standing on a ship, facing forward... the port side in on my left and the starboard on my right.... correct??

OCruisers Posted September 28, 2012 #5 Share Posted September 28, 2012 If you forget which way you're facing (like when you get off an elevator) the cabin numbers on the port are even and the starboard are odd. ~~~~~~~

Pam in CA Posted September 28, 2012 #7 Share Posted September 28, 2012 Just remember that left and port are both 4-letter words! :)I think of "left", "port" and "even" as all 4-letter words. This helps you remember that the even numbered cabins are on the port or left side of the ship. :)
Rare TracieABD Posted September 28, 2012 #8 Share Posted September 28, 2012 On Princess ships, if you are in a corrodor, look down. The waves in the carpet are red on the port or left side and blue on the starboard or right side. The waves point to the front or bow of the ship. :)
scott4020 Posted September 29, 2012 #9 Share Posted September 29, 2012 The origin of starboard is from the Old English word steorbord which means the side the ship is steered. Back in the old days (way before Old English even) there were a lot more right handed people than left (the same that as it is today) so there was always more power from the right side oars. The steering oar or rudder was always placed on the right side of the ship to compensate. Port comes from always mooring the boat in port on the left side to protect the steering oar. 4x4bob Posted September 29, 2012 #11 Share Posted September 29, 2012 However, if the ship is docked on the right side, starboard side, does that become the Port side?:D Bob
Fairport Posted September 29, 2012 #12 Share Posted September 29, 2012 However, if the ship is docked on the right side, starboard side, does that become the Port side?:D Bob The port would then be on the starbord starbord side of the ship.
