Premium Alcohol Package Math

Recommended Posts

But it does matter because a lot of peoples mentality will be that 'these drinks are all free!' and are going to be more apt to indulge. I'm not sure how old you are or how removed you are from the early twenties :p but I assure that is the mentality of many people that age. I've been to alcohol included resorts and the people I went with in that age group (and myself ) sometimes were sloppy drunk and because it was an 'open bar' feeling we just kept going until we got cut off... You are more apt to indulge when you are paying nothing for a drink rather than $7 per drink. That's just the truth. It's like the dining room. If I had my app and entree and am full I might order the dessert anyway because well...it's included. If I had to pay for it? Nope, I'd skip it. Same idea.

If the majority of pax on RC were in their early twenties, this might be more of a problem. But the only cruises on which I have seen a lot of people in that age group are the weekend cruises. Since the drink package is only available on longer cruises, it's a non-issue.

I'm thinking the biggest problems will be on cruises during spring breaks honestly. But I know plenty of people my age (late 30s) that would overindulge simply because its free even at 40. I've seen plenty of really drunk 30 and 40 somethings on the cruises I've taken on RCCL.

As for spring break, I would venture an educated guess that if there are a lot more twenty somethings on a spring break cruise, many will be more concerned with spreading out the cost of the cruise, rather than paying for both the cruise and a $350 bar tab all in advance, since most in that age group are on a much tighter budget.

Either way, you said it yourself- "I've seen plenty of really drunk 30 and 40 somethings on the cruises I've taken on RCCL." And as that was before the drink packages were available, it's pretty clear that those who are prone to overindulge will do so no matter when/how they pay for their drink package. I've been on a Celebrity cruise with the drink package, and noticed nothing different as far as how many people were overindulging. And contrary to popular belief, the ship was not loaded down old geezers going to bed at 9pm; it was full of people in their 30's-50's, and the casino and ice bar were full of people drinking until well in to the week hours.

You seem convinced that a liquor package is going to cause the ship to be overrun with people running around drinking as much as they possibly can, being obnoxious and interfering with your fun, simply because "it's free, it's free, pour me another bartender!" I don't think it will be nearly the issue you fear, so at this point we will have to agree to disagree.

I do think there will be plenty of purchasers of this package that will try to get their moneys worth and I think some of them will be a total nuisance since drunks are almost always obnoxious. So we can totes agree to disagree :) I'll let you know how my cruise on Explorer was next month! I hope to not see much difference and just laugh at the same amount of drunks I usually do lol :p They are at the very least good for entertainment!

I'll keep a lookout for you post, as I would be interested too. My guess is that you will see more people that are "happier" than normal, as they might drink a few more than they normally would, but there won't be more very drunk people (and might be less). But this is a guess, so I will need to await your observations for any real data (or others, should they start posting their observations).

i would have say 3 beers around midday, glass of wine with lunch, 4 beers in pool bar in the evening, 2 beers in pub before dinner, 2 glasses of wines with dinner, 2 beers at the show, 4 beers in pub after the show and 2 jack daniels to finish off the night. Do you thing the drinks package would make sense for me?

hahahahaha.........I need to cruise with you........HAHAHHAHAHAHAH
