Tys Mom Posted January 14, 2013 #1 Share Posted January 14, 2013 We are cruising in two weeks with a stop at Princess Cay. I have reservations for snorkeling. Is there anyone just back from Princess Cay? Will the sea be too cool to snorkel comfortably at the end of January?
Whimsy Posted January 14, 2013 #2 Share Posted January 14, 2013 We were there on January 15 of last year and the water was way to cold for any of us to enjoy.

RobynHenry Posted January 14, 2013 #4 Share Posted January 14, 2013 Maybe bring a wet suit with you ? You might be able to rent one from your local dive shop. At least a 3mm. Lea
Tys Mom Posted January 14, 2013 Author #5 Share Posted January 14, 2013 Thank you. I have a shorty I was considering to take but didn't want to use precious luggage space if it wouldn't be used. Perhaps it wouldn't be wasted at all.
juniper berries Posted January 14, 2013 #6 Share Posted January 14, 2013 Nor sure if this applies but I was surf fishing at Princess Cayes early Dec 2012 and found the water really warm. was only up to knees but got wet from the waves hitting you as you were fishing. Was in the water for about 2 hours and did not feel cold at all. The ocean was warm it was not cold at all compared to lakes in Ontario Canada. I am a person who gets chilled easy. Hope this helps and have a great time.:)
centralcalicruzer Posted January 14, 2013 #7 Share Posted January 14, 2013 I think it depends on what you are used to. We snorkeled there last January and it seemed a little cool when you first got in but I got used to it pretty quickly. But then, I am from California and the ocean temperature here is pretty darn chilly, so for me it seemed warm.
Rare PescadoAmarillo Posted January 14, 2013 #8 Share Posted January 14, 2013 I snorkeled there on January 5th. It's chilly but definitely do-able. You don't have to stay in the water a long time...you can easily snorkel around the feeding pier in 15 minutes or less. If you wear a rash guard, you'll be a bit warmer. OCruisers Posted January 14, 2013 #9 Share Posted January 14, 2013 The water is too cold for us in January. Still makes an enjoyable beach day. :) My friend from MN says she is going in the water. Says she's use to swimming in cold water. LuLu ~~~~
highflyingrealtor Posted January 14, 2013 #10 Share Posted January 14, 2013 Thank you. I have a shorty I was considering to take but didn't want to use precious luggage space if it wouldn't be used. Perhaps it wouldn't be wasted at all. Year after year I always chill a bit, finally last year (March) I didn't. Brought a 3mm shorty, used it for PC, STT, & GT. If you're going to be in for more than 20 minutes or so it really makes a difference. Worth bringing IMHO if you can use more than once.
vancouvergirl2010 Posted January 14, 2013 #11 Share Posted January 14, 2013 Perhaps you don't need an excursion? We went to the far end of the beach and snorkelled on our own. Lots of different fish to see. Took a hot dog bun from the buffet and we were swarmed by the fish!

I admit I am ignorant of many things!:D I've seen you mention a 'rash guard' here and on your blog, can you explain what that is? BTW, LOVE your blog! We will be on the Emerald February 25th for (I think) your last voyage of the winter. Hope to see you there!
bunny1954 Posted January 14, 2013 #13 Share Posted January 14, 2013 Thank you. I have a shorty I was considering to take but didn't want to use precious luggage space if it wouldn't be used. Perhaps it wouldn't be wasted at all. My husband has a full wetsuit that he is taking. I used one of those packing bags (roll type) and it really helped to reduce the bulk. Not sure what his is rated for, but he uses it when he white water rafts in West Virginia in the fall and those water temps are generally in the 50s/60s and he says it does a great job. We went to an AI in the Bahamas in February a few years ago and the water was really only warm enough one day to venture out.

HeidiHo Posted January 14, 2013 #18 Share Posted January 14, 2013 I was just there on Friday and plenty of people were in the water without wet suits. I never got in but put my feet in and even though it was a bit chilly at first it wasn't so cold that I wouldn't have gotten in if I had wanted to and it was warm enough that I know I would have gotten used to it quickly. Rare JustinPlusLauren Posted January 14, 2013 #21 Share Posted January 14, 2013 We were there last January and went snorkeling and swimming! I didn't find it to be too cold to swim! It was a little cool, but refreshing, and it was fine once you got adjusted to the temperature. Lots of people were enjoying the snorkeling and swimming there. Francoiscqc Posted January 15, 2013 #24 Share Posted January 15, 2013 Any advice, everyone, about where to go snorkeling "on your own" (without taking any tour) on Princess Cay? We have our own gear and like to snorkel from the beach, if possible away from the big crowds. Thanks
