smoosh21 Posted June 6, 2005 #27 Share Posted June 6, 2005 I can't imagine sailing on a ship that large. It seems you would almost need an overnight stop just to handle the embarkation and disembarkation between cruises (plus the loading of all supplies and such). Maybe it won't be any larger than the current QM2, its just that passengers will now sleep standing up by straping themselves against the wall, so they can just make the cabins smaller. They can easily get cabins under 80 square feet by doing that :)
blackbird71 Posted June 6, 2005 #28 Share Posted June 6, 2005 Nope Nope Nope I only do R/S or smaller ships..... Well I do have one Mega ship on my dream list and that is the QMII transatlantic... and only on the Transatlantic cruise...... Lucky for me I have done all the places the mass market ships target.... Now my next cruise will be either HAL's Copper Canyon or Silverseas 16 dayer around southern South America.....

bepsf Posted June 6, 2005 #32 Share Posted June 6, 2005 I have absolutely no desire to go on anything that big - whether it be Cunardival or RCI. These are nothing more than floating Las Vegas resorts (and no offense Jim and Lisa, but I have no desire to go there either....) QM2 is already an oversized caricature of an ocean liner - I can't imagine anything larger being remotely "elegant" or "glamorous" - There aren't enough people in the world who would know how to dress for dinner to make it a proper experience... :(
m steve Posted June 6, 2005 #33 Share Posted June 6, 2005 All the Navy's nuclear carriers carry 5000 sailors and officers. They don't complain about the size, the food or thew drink prices. No booze allowed. Shopping at Navy exchange, no duty free shopping, no show lounge. no casino. Save your money and join the Navy.

Druke I Posted June 6, 2005 #35 Share Posted June 6, 2005 Went to Vegas once - and probably won't bother again. Much prefer Reno or Tahoe! But then, I don't normally gamble on a ship either, be it small like Pacific Princess (new), or large like the 5,000 passenger monster being talked about. bepsf Posted June 6, 2005 #36 Share Posted June 6, 2005 Aw, c'mon Brian! Everyone should come to 'Vegas at least once in their life! LOL-- Jim - I've already been there a couple times - most recently on business a couple years ago - first time was back when I was a wee little boy when my folks stopped there on a cross-country car trip - I think I was 2... ;)
blackbird71 Posted June 6, 2005 #37 Share Posted June 6, 2005 If you don't mind answering this question... When and where did you sail on Gruzia? (I remember seeing her in 1981 while on vacation in Yalta) It was around New Years 93 or so. Sailing out of my home of Tampa doing the Western Carb. Real low price and you can not beat taking a cab from home to ship and ship to home on the return. Food had an Ukranian favor but simple and good. Almost all female staff. Room service and restaurant service was all female. And soft touch Blackbird saw one of the restaurant servers in the gift shop and knew that she spoke zero English and they had her serving the officers. She was looking at a bottle of perfume but could not buy it and she was having problems buying normal bathroom supplies for herself. Well old soft touch brought the normal thingys that she did not have money for and later went back and purchased the perfume for her and had the gift store lady give it to her for New Years... She stopped at my table and in a VERY broken English said Thank You for the Gift.... ... she had trouble with that sentence.......
jhannah Posted June 6, 2005 #38 Share Posted June 6, 2005 I've already been there a couple times Okay then. You're off the hook! (But I'll bet you'd love to stay in the new Wynn Las Vegas!)
HeatherInFlorida Posted June 6, 2005 #39 Share Posted June 6, 2005 Nope! Not for me! I remember when 1,000 was our cut-off. Now it's 2,000 .... never never never will I get on a ship with 5,000! Awk:eek: !!!!!!!
ekerr19 Posted June 6, 2005 #40 Share Posted June 6, 2005 Aw, c'mon Brian! Everyone should come to 'Vegas at least once in their life! I liked it better in the 80's... last time we were there, there was paper all over the place, even on the freeway, just outside the city. What is up with all that trash? Does anyone know? tumeroll Posted June 6, 2005 #41 Share Posted June 6, 2005 I sure hope the cruise company that is about to lay down the mega bucks for this floating cattle car reads these threads and posts becasue the 5,000 passenger concept sounds like a non-starter amongst anyone who has been on at least one cruise. Hey if it doesn't work out as a profitable cruise ship maybe NYC or some other seacoast city can buy it an use it as a homeless shelter. Although even that might be difficult to fill these days. Tarkus Posted June 7, 2005 #48 Share Posted June 7, 2005 i don't like staying at resorts approaching this size... so why would i want to do it at sea? will be interesting to see if they can keep ships of this size consistently booked, or if it's a marketing boondoggle!

I had no idea Gruzia sailed in North America. I am originally from Ukraine (up to 1996) and saw all these ships like Gruzia, Uzbekistan, Abkhazia, Rossia (Russia) etc usually sailed Black Sea, I guess they got sold or leased. Wow.. it was really nice to help poor girl.:) You must understand that Ukrainian economy is in real bad shape since 1991 (separation of USSR) , I can't describe whole situation , but analogy with Great Depression won't be very far from truth. Poor English? Not a surprise. Except for school lessons (4-10th grades) mostly reading and writing we didn't have any exposure to English. No TV or radio, no english speaking population. "Made in" , "I love you" and "My name is ..." and "Thank you" was all 90% of russian people knew. ;) It's changing now though.
