billroddy Posted January 29, 2013 #1 Share Posted January 29, 2013 If you don't mind a few memories. I was the radio operator on a cargo ship, the SS Pacific Victory. We left San Francisco on June 6, 1951 and arrived in Saigon on June 28, with a cargo of bombs for the French Air Force. Going up the Saigon River the cargo hatches were covered with heavy steel plates to protect them from attacks by the Viet Cong. Then on to Manila, Yokohama, Long Beach, Panama, Charleston, NYC, Bremerhaven, then back to NYC arriving September 15. Rare 1of4 Posted January 29, 2013 #2 Share Posted January 29, 2013 Very interesting. Thanks for sharing. DH wants to do a cruise that visits many of the WWII sites as he is a history buff. That is on our "list" to do. My uncles were in the Canadian floatillas on D-day in the English Channel. So France may come before the Pacific for us. Krazy Kruizers Posted January 30, 2013 #8 Share Posted January 30, 2013 I always enjoy reading your stories as well. Quite a trip you had carring all those bombs -- and a little scary.
Olney Posted January 30, 2013 #9 Share Posted January 30, 2013 My Korea cruise was a one way repositioning cruise in November 1952. Very crowded staterooms, bad service and food. I flew back in February 1953 with a bed all to myself the whole way and brought back some metal souvenirs made in North Korea. Have had no desire to recreate that experience. ashtabula2211 Posted June 20, 2014 #10 Share Posted June 20, 2014 Bill, I am doing some research on the SS Pacific for a book. I would love to ask you a few questions about the SS Pacific if you allow me to. Thank you, Ben
