We have a large on-board credit on our next cruise, could it be used for the deposit on another cruise? This is Celebrity, in the Caribbean, we've have taken enough ship's tours and we don't drink much more than what we get at the Elite cocktail hour.

As that is a Celebrity policy question, it should be asked on the Celebrity board. However, I doubt it can be used for a future deposit.

On pretty much every cruise line, purchasing a "future cruise credit" onboard is not part of your stateroom charges but an independent purchase that shows up as a separate charge to your credit card.

OBC cannot be used for future cruise deposit. You can cash in your OBC in the casino for a 3% service charge. That's what we do when we have extra non-refundable OBCs.

That doesn't work on every line. We cashed in $100 to use for extra gratuities for some great crew members and they charged it back to our account on the last day.

Sorry -- you can not use shipboard credit to make a deposit on a future cruise.

You have to use it on the cruise you are sailing on.

You would be surprised how quickly those shipboard credits are used up. They can pay for Hotel Service Charge (Automatic tips to crew) that is per person per day if you have not already pre-paid that. It can be used for shore excursions, pictures you buy on the ship, specialty restaurants, drinks like bottled water, sodas, cocktails, the gift shops on board. The only place you can't use it -- casino.

Well, I guess we will have to waste it on junk in the gift shops. It's too bad. We have done every ship's tour offered in the Caribbean and get good benefits from the Elite status so we don't need extras for laundry, drinks, and already have prepaid the gratuities. I will try to get it in the casino as the 5% doesn't seem like much. It's too bad and it does seem like a win-win situation for the cruise lines. We already have another cruise booked for the Med. in April and I was hoping to use the extra cash on tours there.

On Celebrity the non-refundable OBC can be cashed in in the Casino for a 3% service charge. Check with guest relations after the 2nd day of your cruise and they'll tell you if your OBC is refundable or non-refundable. If it's refundable it will be credited back to your credit card at the end of the cruise without a charge. I don't know how it works with a cash account.
