Day in Maui

DH and I will be traveling with two other couples, all of us in our early to mid 60's. We will be with a tour group on POA and have a free day in Maui. Just wondering - trip to Haleakala Crater or Road to Hana? We have to be back on ship by 5:00. The day before we will go with our tour group to Lahaina for a few hours and then will have the afternoon free. Is there anything to do close to the ship dock in Kahului for that afternoon? None of us are into hiking or snorkling.

If you read down the board, these options are discussed widely. No, there really isn't much in the immediate Kahalui area. The closest item of interest is the Iao Valley, about 20 or so minutes away.

Road to Hana or Haleakala is strictly your choice. Neither is a true "must do" IMHO, but both are interesting, depending on your interests, which of course we know nothing about. Hana is definitely the longer day, given your time limitations.

As said it's hard to suggest which one based on my preference but I'd prefer the RTH which is a rainforest vs. the barren landscape of Haleakala.

For your afternoon after Lahaina there's the Maui Ocean Center in Ma'alaea. Also if you drive towards Wailuku there is a free Tropical Garden or I'ao Valley on the way back to the pier.

Unless you arrive at sunrise, you have a slim chance of seeing the entire crater and surrounding islands. Clouds roll in rapidly. We had to leave Sheraton at 3 am to be on time. 2 other times we arrived after 10 am and clouds were already in. Beautiful views though.
