tasmith09 Posted April 2, 2013 #1 Share Posted April 2, 2013 I should know this, this is our 3rd Carnival cruise...but I keep doubting myself. The only forms of ID we need are just our passports and driver's licenses. Right? Leave our birth certificates at home? Less than 4 weeks away:)

tasmith09 Posted April 2, 2013 Author #3 Share Posted April 2, 2013 Thank you. I'm sure I knew that, but I keep have a reoccurring nightmare that we are denied boarding for some reason or another. I need this vacation so bad.
MMastell Posted April 2, 2013 #4 Share Posted April 2, 2013 No need to bring birth certificates. If you REALLY wanted to you could just get by with the passports. I'd also bring the license for easy ID. Passport: Best ID you can have. Take care, Mike
riffatsea Posted April 2, 2013 #5 Share Posted April 2, 2013 You ONLY need a passport to get onto the ship. The only reason to bring a license (IF you are using a passport) is if you need to take it with you when you leave the ship for some reason. big_duck Posted April 2, 2013 #6 Share Posted April 2, 2013 If you have a passport you don't even need the license.
NLuvWthCruisn Posted April 2, 2013 #7 Share Posted April 2, 2013 I saw on here awhile back that someone suggested taking the BC and leaving it in your safe just in case you lost your passport so you wouldn't have any issues with customs at the end. I thought that was a good idea.
terri-eddie Posted April 2, 2013 #8 Share Posted April 2, 2013 No need for the birth certificates, but think about what excursions you might want to try. If you plan to rent a vehicle, you will need to take your driver's license ashore with you.
D4 Posted April 2, 2013 #9 Share Posted April 2, 2013 I try to be prepared for contingencies. I bring our passports in my hidden security pocket and I put our state id cards, birth certificates, and marriage license in DH's carryon. If one of us suffers loss or theft, we've got the other set to get us on board. You need to carry a photo id and your ship card when you are off the ship at ports. thatsonofa Posted April 2, 2013 #10 Share Posted April 2, 2013 I take my passport and DL, and this year I am going to try out my new passport card for getting off at the ports of call.

I bring a notebook on vacation with duplicates of Carnival docs, reservations, travel insurance docs, prepayments, emergency numbers, etc. I even have backup plans for what I would do if I missed the ship when I'm not on a Carnival excursion. It's amazing how my notebook stops any games played by desk clerks, rental agencies, and other services while on vacation. No mysterious upcharges, no arguments about exactly how much I paid and what I paid for.
bplazo Posted April 2, 2013 #13 Share Posted April 2, 2013 I always still bring my bc and el and my passport, just in case.
CheckersMidwest Posted April 3, 2013 #14 Share Posted April 3, 2013 Oh my gosh.....when reading this I realized that they took my daughter's old passport and her birth certificate when we got her new one. We've had the passport a few weeks now, but have NOT received the old one back (usually has holes punched across the end) nor her birth certificate. My son's old one came quickly. I'll call the office tomorrow !
vols_159 Posted April 3, 2013 #15 Share Posted April 3, 2013 we brought my wifes just in case.. We recently got married she changed her name legally on her DL but not her passport We booked her under her maiden name (same as passport and BC) so just in case anyone looked at her DL and seen my last name we had back up plans.. We took passport DL BC and Marriage license.. Was a waste of time they looked at passport and cruise docs only..

tasmith09 Posted April 3, 2013 Author #17 Share Posted April 3, 2013 Thanks all for the responses. I'll probably end up bringing all the docs just to feel like I have a safety net.
Rare sparks1093 Posted April 3, 2013 #18 Share Posted April 3, 2013 Another option is to scan your birth certificate onto your electronic device.
hftmrock Posted April 3, 2013 #19 Share Posted April 3, 2013 Bring a license for getting back in ship, That way you don't have to take your passport off the ship in ports One of he main reasons I take my passport is because of the ports. if g-d forbid I get left at a port for any reason, having my passport will provide me with an easier (and much cheaper) way to get back home. It has never happened to me but I have read stories here and I would not be caught in a non US port without my passport.
