wardy86 Posted April 16, 2013 #1 Share Posted April 16, 2013 Hi All, First timer for HAL Can anyone just clarify the rules for taking drinks onboard HAL? I think I've read you can take wine onboard, but do they allow you to take a bottle of spirits onboard? Also do they allow you to take cans of soda onboard? Thanks
HookedAfterOne Posted April 16, 2013 #2 Share Posted April 16, 2013 I am a first timer as well on HAL as well ... but an avid reader and researcher ... I do believe that you may NOT bring spirits or beer onboard, but is available for purchase. I think soda and water is OK, but I too would like clarification on that from those who know, too! :)
jtl513 Posted April 16, 2013 #3 Share Posted April 16, 2013 Right now you can bring on as much as you like of any beverages except beer and hard liquor. From every port. There are rumors swirling that a quantity limit may be placed on wine in the near future.
Krazy Kruizers Posted April 16, 2013 #4 Share Posted April 16, 2013 At the present time you can take as much wine, champagne, bottled water, soda, mixers as you want onto HAL ships. There is talk that HAL wants to limit how much wine you take onto a ship -- but no one knows if and when this will happen. You can buy alcohol and beer for in-cabin consumption through HAL's site, through Ship Services at 1-800-541-1576 or through room service once you are on the ship. I also forgot to say that there is an $18 per bottle corkage fee if you take your wine to any bar/lounge or the dining room. AQnd right now you can also buy wine in the ports to take onto the ship. Krazy Kruizers Posted April 16, 2013 #7 Share Posted April 16, 2013 1 Liter size bottles.
sail7seas Posted April 16, 2013 #8 Share Posted April 16, 2013 You will find any liquor you order waiting in your cabin when you board. It is rare for them to not all be delivered morning/early afternoon of embarkation day.
Krazy Kruizers Posted April 16, 2013 #9 Share Posted April 16, 2013 If you decide to order alcohol via HAL's site, mark it to be delivered "At Sea". This is so that if you are sailing out of Ft Lauderdale you avoid paying their sales tax. Only once did we not have our alcohol in our cabin when we embarked. jumpingbeans Posted April 16, 2013 #11 Share Posted April 16, 2013 So, if they let you take wine onboard how do they know if I have a bottle of wine or a bottle of gin in my suitcase when I board the ship?

AndrewM Posted April 17, 2013 #13 Share Posted April 17, 2013 Probably one of my top 3 reasons for sailing HAL is the ability to bring my own wine on the ships. I will likely start sampling other cruise lines if their policy changes.
snowmc Posted April 17, 2013 #14 Share Posted April 17, 2013 We have been able to bring beer onboard the last two years without problem. Policy does not state no beer...only no liquor. We will do this again this year....maybe we just got lucky, but I don't think so.

ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES BROUGHT ON BOARD Except for wine and champagne, alcoholic beverages purchased in the ship’s stores or otherwise brought on the ship cannot be consumed on the ship. Bottles and other containers will be collected for safekeeping and delivered to your stateroom on the last day of the voyage.

Beer is not wine. ;) Can I Bring Alcoholic Beverages Onboard? Except for wine and champagne, guests cannot bring hard alcohol on board for private consumption. Hard alcohol purchased on board in the duty free shops or in port will be collected, stored for safekeeping and delivered to your stateroom on the last day of the voyage. Guests can bring as much wine and/or champagne as they choose on board at embarkation or purchased in port. A corkage fee of US$18.00 applies to wine and champagne brought to the shipboard restaurants or bars for consumption. Wine and/or champagne brought on board cannot be consumed in any public venue. If a guest is drinking a beverage carried on board and in a public venue they will be asked to return it to their stateroom.

It is rare for them to not all be delivered morning/early afternoon of embarkation day. It is not always true that you will find any liquor you order waiting in your cabin when you board. In neither of my HAL cruises has that been the case. On my last cruise a bottle I didn't order was there and when I called room service to report it I was told they have until sail away to fill the orders. I just didn't want them to think they had filled my order.
sail7seas Posted April 18, 2013 #20 Share Posted April 18, 2013 I suppose they are not supposed to deliver liquor to cabins prior to international waters or they should be charging sales tax (when sailing from FLL). Unofficially, they deliver the liquor. We do a great many b-to-b's and watch the carts go by mid morning loaded with all the liquor/wine orders. Sorry, HAL, if this post gets you in trouble with State of Florida....or any other embarkation port. :D
catl331 Posted April 18, 2013 #21 Share Posted April 18, 2013 We have carried on beer in Copenhagen, Vancouver, Seattle and Juneau. Guess we have been very lucky then. ;)They will be more lenient at en-route ports than at the embarkation port, particularly if the beer you're bringing on isn't sold on board - but that doesn't change the official policy, so don't act surprised if they refuse to allow it at some point. We were on one cruise where a passenger was handing out free beer at the bottom of the gangway, provided you stood there and drank it with him! Apparently he was told he had to have it held until disembarkation.
Typhoon1 Posted April 18, 2013 #22 Share Posted April 18, 2013 As you can see from KK's info, the HAL prices are pretty competitive. You don't have to smuggle, and you have the convenience of your order waiting in your cabin when you arrive.
