Children sitting at the bar

I think it depends on the location. I really don't think that it appropiate for a kids to be at the bar especiallay by the casino that full of smokers. I have three kids of my own and there told not to sit at the bars. It does not seem right to me.

Point I made is that there are places for kids and places for adults... Kids don't belong in bars

So if my kids want to get a soda with their soda card, they should come hunt me down and make me leave whatever it is I'm doing so I can go up the BAR (the only place that has the soda that the kids get) and get it for them? Or what if they want a non-alcoholic drink (which also comes from the BAR). If they are sitting with their parents at the bar, there should be no problem with it (yes I believe that some bars should not allow children at all, but the Atrium bar, the bar in the Ocean Plaza, the aft bar, or bar on the Lido mid ship - sure, kids should be allowed to go up to them to get their drinks ... if they are sitting there, maybe people should consider the fact that they might be waiting on their drinks - adults tend to be rude to kids dismissing them as an obstacle in their path and will just cut in line in front of a child, even tho they darn well expect for a child to say "excuse me" to them). Maybe if there were an area where soda came from that didn't serve alcohol, Carnival could make it a "rule" that children were to only go there to get their sodas instead of going to the bar ... but until that time, kids have just as much right to go to (and sit at) the bar as adults do.:confused:

Considering there is no where else for my 6 y/o to get his soda and if he stands, he is shorter than the bar and cannot be seen to be waited on, I have no problem with him sitting on a stool. Carnival has set it up in this fashion and until they offer soda elsewhere, it ain't gonna change.

I do think that there should be areas other than bars that kids should be able to get a soda, however I don't think 6 year olds should be getting their own soda at all. Doesn't this mean they are unattended?

Unless there is signage that forbids minors in that area, then children should have every right as an adult to a stool.

even though I KNOW that its different, there are states that do NOT allow children at the bar on a stool and have no rights to be at the bar.

I would defer to whatever the actual rule states and if they are allowed, then this is fine. if they are not, then signage or no signage, it should not be allowed

After six they should not be hanging out at bars. Who wants to listen to someones child have a meltdown at a bar when they are relaxing. I also think there should be a bar area just for kids. One thing I love when I go to Vegas is no one under 21 is allowed at the bar. Nice!

Do not get me wrong, I like the kids around me at a riding camp I direct but there is a time and a place for everything. A bar after 6pm is not the place for a child to be.

Probably going to start WW3 here but I'm curious,

On my last cruise there were quite a few families on the ship, and on several occasions I was unable to get a seat at a bar (atrium, lido) because there were children sitting on the stools hanging out with their parents. I didn't say anything at the time, but does anyone else think this is inappropriate? A bar to me is a place for those who are of drinking age to be and not 8 and 10 year olds.

They sell non-alcoholic drinks at the bar. They have as much right to be there as you do.

bars in restaurants also sell non-alcoholic drinks at the bar. and there is a law in some states that says they can not sit at the bar.

I realize its a different situation but your assumption that because they sell non-alcoholic drinks at the bar that they have as much rights is an incorrect assumption

its all up to the rules. Carnival has the right to say that they cant be there. (I dont think it is Carnival's policy but they absolutely positively have the right)

But on a cruise ship it is the ONLY place they sell non-alcoholic drinks. Carnival limits kids under 18 to some areas like Serenity, the Casino, and clubs after a certain time. The bars in those areas are the only ones that kids are not allowed to sit at the bar....anywhere else is fair game for a kid to sit and have a drink on a Carnival ship.

I didn't say it was not allowed. more than likely it is...

I just said that your assumption that because they served non alcoholic beverages, they have as much right was an incorrect assumption.

In theory, they could purchase the drinks and move away from the bar and sit any other place on the ship. (I dont think this is the policy but it is a possible solution)

I dont mind kids at the bar if the rules state that they are allowed.

Some of you are acting lie kids can even avoid bars on a cruise ship. This is not the case especially on a fantasy class ship where most all of the bars are in public areas where you have to pass one to get where you are going. It is not like the kids are walking into a bar at home located on the corner of a shady part of town. Again the bars are the only pace they can get their sodas.

I do find it amusing when these parents stink eye the guys drinking adult beverages, using adult language when discussing adult topics.

This is the new age and anything goes. Teach the children right from the get go, and when they trash your house after a party when you are away, well, let the parents deal with it, afterall, they're just chillldrun.

And enjoy the salty talk! Sailor's talk going on all the time! Bring your chilldrun to hear the salty talk and may even be insulted. Anything goes!

Nuthin ever new here on Cruise Critic.

Like I said the last time, they are paying customers and have just as much right to be there (especially with the 'rents) as anyone else does.

Ain't no sody shops on board, that's were they sell the pop.

I get it and I totally agree they are paying customers like anyone else and can sit and get a drink. My issue with this is on a previous cruise hubby and I went on we closed the piano bar and ended up heading to the Lido deck with the piano player to drink and talk now this is around midnight-1Am. We are at a very packed bar with a rowdy crowd and quite a few lit people. We had kids running all around us screaming and yelling and being rowdy themselvs fine and dandy your on vacation too right? Now I'm NOT a prude in any way but are children running around at 12-1AM appropriate at a bar? We aren't talking teenagers here we are talking 6, 7, 8 year olds. Sorry call me a prude or not but that is not acceptable to let your little kids run around with drunk people cursing and swearing at all hours and no I wasn't drunk nor using bad language it was just a observation.

But a cruise ship isn't Vegas -- and it isn't your state. My province has a similar after hours rule for bar/restaurants but the kick out time is 9 pm -- but the drinking age is 19 not 21 --

Again the lido bar is in an open public space. So should kids be banned from lido after midnight? My nieces and nephew have no bedtime while on vacation so I could see other kids on lido deck a public space after midnight. Now I could understand your point if it was one of the lounges but not a bar out in open in a very public part of the ship.

I see your point and I get it I really do, I guess I just don't want my little ones exposed to some of the things that were happening around us. The world is bad enough that they don't need to be exposed to sex and the F bomb and many other things I observed then again it wasn't my kids so who am I to judge.

I am curious but what wrong with sex. There are cultures that allow nudity with far less perversion that many prudish ones. F bombs, teach them about words and how they can use it appropriately. Correct, no one should judge but we do because of our own personal hangups. Kids are paying customers but easy targets but what about the fat person taking up more than his far space. I watch my language and with or without child would not hang around anyone who doesn't in public and teach my kids the same. NEVER had an occasion where this had been an issue on most vacations. I guess I travel with some class acts:-)

Regardless of where they sit I think children at/in the bar is fine in the daytime 11-6pm on a family cruise, any later or a more adult type bar isnt really appropriate. Children are often round adults and alcohol at various occasions so why should a family bar/pub be any different?

Over here most bars/pubs are also restaurants so theres a 'kids out at 7' rule due to drinking getting heavier and sexual tension getting higher.

Which I agree with.

Sexual tension in a Harvester after 7pm? your 'avin a larf.
