Rome: BIRG and First Class

Can you pay extra to sit in First Class with a BIRG ticket on the train to and from Civitavecchia?

I am looking at my options, and the different trains are a bit confusing to me.

Also, is this "Seatrain" running in July?

Thank you for any suggestions, thoughts or comments!

The tourist train runs when there are a sufficient number of ships in port.

There are there different types of trains that run between Civitavecchia and Rome (other than the tourist train).

  • Regional (and regional velocity): basic commuter trains, the velocity (faster) ones have a first class car, no seat reservations
  • IC (Intercity): longer distance trains that make fewer stops than regionals, seat reservations required, first and second class cars
  • Frecciabianca: newer, fast trains that make no stops between Civitavecchia and Rome, first and second class cars, seat reservations required

If you want to use the BIRG ticket you can only take a regional train, which means no seat reservation. You can only sit in second class if you're on a train with a first class car (s).

If you want to use one of the other trains you must purchase a traditional train ticket. Once in Rome you can then purchase a BIG (Biglietto Integrato Giornaliero) for 6 Euro, this gives you unlimited access to metro, buses and trams in Rome for the day.

Thank you so much!! This is very helpful.

How do you know if the "tourist train" will be running for your port day?
