We were there last year, everyone is concentrating on what their guides are telling them and looking at the ceiling, which makes them an easy target

I was just there last week and it was very crowded. Although, I never felt threatened I can see this happening.

I am not surprised at all - they pack far too many people into that museum at peak times...

If you are pre/post staying in Rome over a Friday night, I suggest you try the night time visit to the Museum and Sistine Chapel. Not crowded at all. I tend to get claustrophobic in crowded area, especially when it's hot. So, I try to find times where I can hope to not be put in that situation. You can wander in St. Peter's in the late afternoon before your Museum time. Stop in somewhere for a late lunch/early dinner/snack before your Museum time. It's a good way to avoid the crowds.

We were in the Sistine Chapel approximately two weeks ago, and given how crowded it was, I am also not surprised that pickpockets have found the site.
