Cannes on our own?

Is Cannes an easy port to do without a guided tour? Is it an easy city to walk? Any nearby beaches?

 

We previously have done Villefranche and Ajaccio, Corsica walking on our own and we were hoping we could do the same in Cannes. It was nice to have a relaxing day without a real itinerary.

 

Any advice is appreciated.

We have spent our share of time (too much time) in Cannes in both hotels and cruise ships. Bottom line is that although Cannes is actually a pretty large city, the only area of interest to most tourist visitors is the area that fronts the water to inland about 3 blocks. It is all quite walkable from the tender pier, and for folks capable of strolling a couple of miles its just a matter of using your feet. For those with mobility problems that do have a cute little "Petit Train" which is like a kiddy ride pulled by a small engine. You can ride the Petit Train around town....but we think the best thing is to walk and browse some of shops. There is also a pretty decent sandy beach (with real sand) only a few minute walk from the tender pier for those who want a day (or part of a day) on the beach.

The above answer is perfect. Yes, this is a simple port to spend a relaxing day at one your own. No guide needed at all.

I agree with the others here. If you're looking for a easy day in port, it can be done in Cannes. After several intensive sight seeing ports in a row, we wanted a slow paced day. We walked off the ship and along the waterfront well before much of anything was open. We strolled around for an hour or two just window shopping and sitting on benches enjoying the view as the town woke up around us. Before walking back to the ship, we hiked up the small hill that overlooks the town and water (there is some sort of fort structure up there) and then back down. It was uphill, but on nice sidewalks or paved streets. An easy enough walk. The views from up there were quite nice. I think we went back to the ship for a late lunch and then relaxed the rest of the day onboard.

There are a few museums, an old fort and Napoleon's birth place as well. Very easy to do on your own.

Thanks again everyone. We are looking forward to a relaxed easy going day in Cannes now. The rest of our cruise is tour intensive so it will be a good break.

Antibes is a very easy DIY from Cannes. Very pretty marina, nice town that feels "real", a small daily morning market, and a Picasso museum. Fits in nicely if you want to see Cannes also. Nice probably has more to offer a first time visitor, but you'd see less of Cannes if you also want to see that town. Antibes can be reached by either the train or bus. Bus is cheaper and stops are closer, train is faster (same for both Nice and Antibes).
