Best way of getting to St Marks Square

Visiting next week. Last time we used the ships shuttle but this time it's too restrictive

I have three choices

1. Walk in

2. Vaperetto

3. Aliligula

Struggling to decide. Currently favouring walking or Alilgula for ease, where does it leave from in the port? What's everybody's thoughts

Assuming you mean from Piazzale Roma what's better than vap no 1 or no 2 down the Grand Canal ?

It's a glorious ride and with you vap pass it's free :) All the best Tony

We take the people mover and walk from there. Venice is a great city for walking. No cars running you over. On most corners there are signs pointing to San Marco Plaza, The Rialto Bridge and Piazzale Roma. Makes it nearly impossible to get lost.

The "best way" vs the fastest way :). Personally, we love to walk and the "best way" to see Venice is to walk everywhere. This is the only way you get to see a lot of the city not normally viewed when you take boats. So, from the port you would take the People Mover (1 Euro per person) over to the Piazale Roma from where you can begin your walk. It really helps to have a decent guide book and/or map. We recommend taking a route that goes through the Campo Santa Margherita which is a part of Venice that DW and I think is a good example of the "real Venice" as opposed to the tourist Venice. This Campo is not far from the University and reflects more of the normal day to day life of the city (and there is an outdoor café in the square).

Agree "best" is a relative term and varies by person. I think for a first-time visitor the "best" suggestion is to walk it one time and then do the Vaporetto (either line 1 or 2) one time. That way you get the best approach from both water and land.

It is almost impossible not to get lost in Venice. It is also easy to find your way back from being lost. There are signs that point to San Marco in opposite directions and both are correct. Everyone who visits Venice should take a ride down the Grand Canal in a Vaporetto #1 or #2 (#2 is express). If you have lots of time and no particular agenda walking around Venice is wonderful!

From the cruise terminal, we used the People Mover to Pzle Roma and then Vaporetto #2 to San Marco Square and it took about an hour's time to get there. We made this trek once in the evening and once in the morning and it still took about the same amount of time regardless of the time of day. We chose this way because one of our "things to do" in Venice was to have a ride on the Grand Canal.

Coming back, we walked from San Marco Square to Rialto and then took #2 back to Pzle Roma - mostly because part of our party wasn't able to make the walk the whole way back (or at least back to Pzle Roma).

The People Mover is about a 5 minute stroll from where the Alilaguna picks up by the ships.

If you can, I would recommend walking there....take the people mover to the P Roma and follow the signs to St Marks. And then you can take the bus back to the P Roma.

That is what we did. It was great. We took our time walking to St Marks and taking pictures along the way. We spent quite a bit of time around that area of Venice....and then took a bus back thru the Grand Canal from St Marks stop. You see so much while walking.

Enjoy!
