Sea sickness

Since I am a lifelong motion/sea-sickness sufferer I have tried all of the remedies people have mentioned, except for the green apples.

Of everything I have tried, all have helped in varying degrees, based on the circumstances, except the sea bands -- waste of money for me, anyway. For the other stuff, I always have a Plan A, Plan B, Plan C, etc. I start with the least aggressive and progress through the alternatives until I find relief.

Usually the non-drowsy Dramamine works well. But for a couple of cruises where they had to close the lido pool because it was so rough that water was being thrown all over the deck for days -- well, that was a patch cruise!:D

Count me among those who hate the patch. I used it ONCE, to combat nausea after minor surgery, and along with the dry mouth, it affected my balance. I was standing up in my kitchen, talking to DH, and -- out of the blue -- stumbled and almost tipped over! So bizarre. I can't imagine what that would have been like on a cruise!

I like the natural remedies -- ginger pills, Relief Bands, etc. Hate the patch.

I take the walmart brand dramamine I think it is $2 for 8. They are non drowsey and work great I take them before dinner that is when I always feel sea sick. So I guess you can take the ginger root in the morning when there is not as much motion than the other later. I would not take the patch too many side affects.

Okay its me again regarding this patch....I had a great response to my questions but now I need to know does the patch make you drowsy or not...I had both answers some said it does some says it does not..I know about the dry mouth, I will just drink more regarding that..Hehhehee..

But I do not to feel drowsy nor do I want to be tired...I want to be able to hang out at night for these 3 days not feeling tired and have to go to bed. Also we will be docked overnight in Nassau so the ship will not be moving....So should I just wait and see how I feel and if I start to feel sick I can apply it... Does anyone know how fast it acts??

If Lovefuninthe sun can pitch in again I would to hear what you think

I know it says apply a few hours before you start your trip, but I would wait to see if you actually get sick first. You can always drink some gingerale and lay down for a couple of hours if you do get sick and apply the patch. That way if you don't get sick, you don't have to worry about any side effects. That is what I do. I only have problems if the sea is rough, so I just deal with it while the patch does its thing. I have never had problems with sleepiness, but I don't drink with it so I can't tell you those effects.

This sounds like the advice I am going to take...I guess I will get the prescription..I was trying to way my optionsbefore I spent 32 dollars on it, but I guess if I need it I will have it and not have to worry if I do I dont have it ??????

My mom and sister are teeny tiny and they found that a whole patch was too much for them. It did make them very drowsy. They now just use half a patch with no problems.

I may even try the 1/2 patch too if it comes down to me needing it, it sounds like a good idea to me

I used the patch one time and never again. I know some folks do fine with it but I am not one of them. My eyes were so dilated that I could not read the menu and I felt dizzy all of the time. Very dry mouth. I did not get sea sick but I felt awful until I took it off and then it took a couple of days to feel normal again.

I use Bonine starting the night before I board the ship and don't have any problems.

Speaking from someone who suffers from sea sickness on dry land  I wore the patch for years every time I cruised. The problem I had was not drowsiness but after the cruise. I actually went through withdrawal symptoms which were worse than the actual sea sickness. I am not saying this will happen to you but when we were doing 10 and 14 day cruises it happened to me. I now take Bonine and do extremely well with it. It says one tablet every 24 hrs but I take one in the morning and one at night and have had no side effects, drowsiness, dry mouth or withdrawal symptoms. My Doctor approved the twice a day fyi.

Good luck with whatever you choose.

My Mother is almost 78 and a medium build. Hasn't any problems with the patches and uses them on all of her cruises. She also has a drink regularly and stays up late in the casino. Without the patch she wouldn't be able to cruise at all.

BTW, here in Canada, the patches do not require prescriptions and can be purchased OTC for approximately $15.

I used the patch once. It helped a little I think, but I remember feeling a tiny bit dizzy or tired. I switched to Bonine and have used it on every cruise since. I have my "sealegs" now and probably don't need to use anything, but better safe than sorry!!!

The scopolomine patch is an anticholinergic medication, not an antihistamine -- it should not make you drowsy, bit of course, everyone is different.

It will, however, make your mouth very, very, very dry. (It is actually the same medication we give to patients preoperatively to dry up their oral secretions)

Wow, the next time I need some, can I just send you the money and you send me some?

You may want to find some ginger candy or bring some ginger zinger tea, I use these too. Sometimes on the last couple of days I will feel just a timy bit sea sick and I don't break out patches for that, I just have some hot water sent to my room and make some tea. That will generally do the trick for mild bouts.

Sorry, Foxcent, didn't see the last part regarding how long it takes to act....

You will notice it beginning to work within an hour of placing it behind your ear. But the full benefits won't be realized for 2 or 3 hours.

I sometimes use them even when I fly. I apply them before I leave for the airport, and by the time we take off I am usually OK.
