Australian family Posted October 1, 2013 #2 Share Posted October 1, 2013 We have used Thrifty in Tauranga. They met us near the ship and took us by shuttle to their office. To get a shuttle back we had to be back by 5pm, and they dropped us off. Or you could get a taxi back if arriving back after 5pm. The service was very good and we were also upgraded with our car. I was able to ring Thrifty from Australia and do the booking over the phone and got a good price for the day. Here are their details Pegasus Rental Cars 107 Hewletts Road Mt Maunganui 07 5721141 0800354508 Book On Line @ http://www.carrentalstauranga.co.nz We have found them easy to deal with. They will be waiting right outside the gates to the wharf (they aren't allowed inside any more). At the end of the day, we leave the car where we picked it up. We used them on a recent NZ cruise and were met at the wharf and taken to their depot and returned to the ship when we returned that afternoon. They took us on a mini bus that held 10 but there were only 8 of us. The originator of this thread is from USA, so the reverse would apply - is he used to driving on the left? NZ roads do not have many major freeways and the road from Tauranga to Hobbitown is mainly two way traffic, often with a single lane in each direction. I like the idea of fewer passengers than the ship tours and you do usually get to see more. What did you do about lunch? Did you eat at the Museum? How expensive was it? MargoK Posted October 4, 2013 #13 Share Posted October 4, 2013 I can recommend RitePrice Rentals. We rented a van Jan 2011 and took 10 CCers on a private tour to Rotorua. We were quite impressed with their service. Do not get complacent about light traffic! When we arrived back in Mt Maunganui the traffic was bumper to bumper as it was school holidays, public holiday and the Surf Champs were on!!! We made it back to the ship with 10 mins to spare.
