Trivia on Reflection, Stll Billboard Top Hits?

As a trivia player I was wondering what to expect on our Dec 21 Reflection 7 day sailing. An admitted trivia dork this is truly fun for us.

Last Feb on Connie most of the trivia was based on Billboard Top Hits, a big yawn. Maybe this collaboration with Billboard has been discontinued ( one can only hope.)

Just hoping for general trivia, whatever, anything but Billboard !

Just off the Solstice and the billboard trivia was only used in the evening (8pm) and they had billboard music cards for prizes (which only good for US citizens). We did a B2B and for the second cruise it was just music trivia and the billboard was abandoned.:D

Thanks, I will look forward to hearing about your cruise.

We're back from a great week on Reflection. Here is the trivia low-down:

We did, sadly, play some music billboard trivia. In a word, it was awful. But some of them made up their own music trivia and that was much better.

Someone who we cruised with on a couple of ships was promoted to Activities director. Micky. We asked him to please do one trivia with us and he did. He made up a "Who is smarter than the Activities Staff" trivia which he led and one of the teams was about 5 of the activities staff. They did beat us (by just one point) but it was a blast.

They no longer hand out prizes for each session. You get a 'passport' card with areas for them to sign when you win. At the end of the cruise you go down to their area (on deck 4) and trade the card in for prizes. I know it is much easier for X, but we missed the old way. Plus we came home with far less booty than we usually do. And no progressive trivia.

Back to billboard. Someone told us that X is trying to appeal to the younger crowd. The music they played (throughout the ship) and the volume they played it at confirmed it for us. I hope they go back to playing music for people over the age of 17.

Please be sure to harass Victor from Mexico for us.:D

The collaboration with Billboard gets a full page in Celebrity's brochure (for next year), and it's also mentioned on their website :-

" When considering what are the hottest new songs or who are the most popular performers, Billboard is the source that comes to music lovers’ minds. So, when seeking a partner for a series of new musical offerings onboard, that’s exactly who Celebrity Cruises approached, and guests across the fleet are now "rocking" the benefits. ...... joined forces with Billboard to launch a series of innovative, modern luxury musical programs onboard. Based on Billboard's exclusive charts that track today’s hottest songs and artists, a trivia series, new musically focused game shows and themed parties will offer guests fun and exciting entertainment experiences."

" We're going to shake up perceptions of what shipboard entertainment is all about, with widely varied, enticing options throughout the day and night on every ship" says Celebrity's Director of Entertainment Eric Bohus.

Perhaps guests might struggle at the trivia if they are not a listener of Top 100 Chart Music (American charts); and non-Americans wouldn't have much chance, so would really be excluded from the activity.

Sigh, thank for posting.

We sail on Reflection this Saturday. I do not care about the prizes, we usually give them away on the spot. It is part of the fun though to rack your brain for

a cheesy prize,

Maybe someone from X actually reads these posts and might

realize that real trivia will be sorely missed. No more acapella groups,

the end of the classical quartets, I will hardly recognize the only

cruise line I have ever sailed on.

I am NOT a senior or totally boring, these are simply activities I

enjoy on my cruise. I guess I will spend most of the week on my balcony

(not a bad thing) as I don't gamble, drink much or go near the pool.

Do you think you might be throwing the baby out with the bath water?

There were at least 3 games a day, so out of say 24 games, maybe 3 were billboard.

Oh good. We find that playing trivia makes for a fun cruise and great friendships. I would not be happy if we didn't play!

Gosh, in all the cruises we have taken and trivia played, we have never done the Jeopardy style. Sounds fun though.

So I guess that answer would be no.

We were on Connie for two months and had the best Trivia ever!

Seldom did the same question come up and usually only from a different Activities Staff.

At 10:15 and 4:15 20 general knowledge questions were asked.

There was also a daily music trivia but I can't name any song in under two weeks and we avoid those.

There was also an occasional Pub Trivia of 40 questions hosted by the Activities Manager Mark.

Hats off to the Constellation Activities staff for all the research they did on behalf of passengers.

Billboard Trivia took over on Reflection when we sailed earlier this year and we no longer bothered going.

Is this the same Micky who was on Silhouette a year or two ago? I hope so, as he (and a couple of other cruise staff) really stood out for us to make that a great cruise, and we are about to embark on Reflection this week.

The same Micky (from Great Britain). He is a nice guy.

Ask him to host the trivia I described! Maybe we can start a tradition!:)

We were on Connie in July. We had the best trivia we have ever had on a cruise. Progressive trivia, music & general knowledge. Mark & Maarten made them very enjoyable. We made many friends while enjoying the trivia.

Music trivia were done in decades. As they got more modern we got worse at them.

We got a few prizes. It was just the thrill of the win not the prize.

What in the world is "luxury" musical.....er....certainly NOT Billboard.

I wonder if the new marketing to young people will pay off when it is retired people who have time to cruise.

How about a luxury nursing home cruise? Wouldn't the background music be The Beatles these days?

LOL

QUOTE]

We just returned from the Reflection Feb 8th cruise. We were so disappointed with the lack of trivia on this cruise. It's always been one of our most favorite things about the cruises. That may sound kinda lame, but we really enjoy it, and we've made great friends with people we've played with too over the years. The morning trivia is always our most favorite of the day, and on this cruise, there was NO morning trivia at all.

The evening of the first day which was a sea day, I saw Alexander the CD, and asked him if there would be more trivia-especially morning trivia coming up on the cruise. He said no... that they were getting away from paper trivia all together, and that they have other morning activities for people. He said that they experienced not a lot of guests showing up for trivia, and so it was a waste to use that time of the entertainment staff. They did have trivia each day between 1 and 2 pm, but we went one day at 2pm, and nobody showed up to run it. Then they also did a paper trivia each evening at 4:45 pm on the oceanview café veranda--which was a bad time as people are getting ready for evening drinks and dinner, and also it was outside and either hot or windy. We asked one of the entertainment staff, and he also said he didn't like it out there for various reasons. One day the mid-day trivia was the Billboard Music that some people have mentioned. We used paper for our answers, but found it to be rather boring with the multiple choice answers. Also mid-day once we played name that tune, and it was really fun. We met some other people during that game who were also upset by a lack of trivia on the ship. They had asked a few others, and got different answers about it.

**My big question is... is this just a Reflection thing to do away with morning trivia, and to start getting away from the paper trivia? Or is it all of Celebrity?**

Supposedly, according to the CD (Alexander, who I liked, and was very easy to talk to and personable), they are working in more group activities and have lots of other activities in the day for people besides trivia. They would sometimes do group game type of things in the entertainment court or in the grand foyer, but those areas are small, and with not many places at all for people to sit. Also... to look at the daily paper, the 'Reflection Today', the morning activities are fitness, fitness, solo travelers coffee hour, fitness, fashion watch showcase, casino slot thing, fitness, tshirt sale, future cruise presentation, spa, spa, spa, fitness, health seminar, fitness, spa seminar, lawn games golf putting, dance class, art studio class, xbox, watch gift set event... etc etc. We aren't spa people at all, and do not participate in many of the fitness activities, or much in the casino either. I don't consider sales as activities either. We don't play bingo usually either, but found it weird that they only had bingo twice during the week on two of the three sea days. They did have matinee shows sometimes with guest entertainers, etc, and we did enjoy those. However... we really did miss our trivia. (Especially in the mornings.) Trivia doesn't make or break our cruises, but we do enjoy it a lot.

ps. They also do a weird thing where they don't bring prizes to the games, but rather they sign a paper if you win, and you claim prizes on the last evening of the cruise in two half hour time periods. Trivia is never about the prizes for us though... it's just about the fun and getting to know not only other passengers, but also the entertainment staff.

pss. Sorry this is so long! Didn't realize I was writing so much. : )

No worries, JB3, for those of us who love trivia, this is a big deal!

I hope this is not a ship-wide decision. I will sorely miss all the trivia that we attend.

Maybe someone from a different cruise ship can let us know what the situation is on other ships.

I hope your experience is not a forecast of what is to come.
