fairsky1984 Posted November 15, 2013 #1 Share Posted November 15, 2013 Any recommendations for purchasing trip insurance besides through Princess? Have never done so in all our years, but maybe time to start thinking about it. Any input and recommendations appreciated. Thanks
Rare Host Jazzbeau Posted November 15, 2013 #2 Share Posted November 15, 2013 insure my trip (dot com) will show you a range of policies from all the leading companies. These policies may be cheaper than Princess, and they include one extra feature: protection if Princess goes bankrupt. They have varying rules about pre-exisiting illness coverage, sometimes requiring that you buy the policy within 14 days of putting down the first deposit on the trip. If you then cancel the trip, they should let you roll the policy over to another trip within the next year or so. The biggest benefit of insuring direct with Princess is that coverage starts with your first deposit but the insurance premium isn't due until final payment. BRANDEE Posted November 15, 2013 #4 Share Posted November 15, 2013 Any recommendations for purchasing trip insurance besides through Princess? Have never done so in all our years, but maybe time to start thinking about it. Any input and recommendations appreciated. Thanks We found Travel Guard or Access America (Allianz) to have more cancellation options if needed. Consider elderly parents, pregnant daughter in laws and the other friends who are cruising with you. Some policies are based on price of trip and some on age of insured. We also have used Princess Care in the past, but needed more "optons" lately.
Astro Flyer Posted November 15, 2013 #5 Share Posted November 15, 2013 Insure my trip is a great source to compare insurance companies & we recently used Insure Assist.
Rare Keith1010 Posted November 15, 2013 #6 Share Posted November 15, 2013 As others said a good source for other policies is insuremytrip.com They have a nice way to compare the policies and from there you can then look at those policies and manually compare it to Princess. Happy2cruise Posted November 17, 2013 #11 Share Posted November 17, 2013 My TA is also helpful but I've found policies through Insure My Trip which my TA said she couldn't beat. ;) Agree with you. Most TA's do not offer a variety to choose from.
MauiLvrs Posted November 20, 2013 #12 Share Posted November 20, 2013 Whatever insurance you choose (and most folks should probably choose some) be sure to read the coverage in very careful detail. We were only headed to Ensenada and were in port nearly every day. Thinking what could go wrong, we decided (not a good decision) to use our Divers Alert Network (DAN) policy just in case. Seemed like a good idea at the time as we were planning to dive in San Diego so it should cover us, and not going very far and were in Californian most every day ...What could go wrong. :o DW got attacked by her gallbladder before we even had a chance to dive and we had to disembark in Ensenada. Turns out a lot. After 36 years of traveling together, our luck ran out (but at least not completely). Fortunately, Kaiser should cover most of the medical and likely the $1900 ride from Ensenada back to San Diego. Our DAN coverage seem effective: Medical Dive Accident Coverage $250,000 Death & Dismemberment $15,000 Permanent & Total Disability $15,000 Extra Transportation $2,000 Extra Accommodation $3,000 Medical Non-Dive Accident Coverage $10,000 Diving Vacation Cancellation $10,000 Diving Vacation Interruption $5,000 (until we read the FINE details) But as it turns out, they may have changed the coverage after I carefully read the policy a couple years back and it seems not as good as it once was. While a Vacation Interruption is covered for $5,000 as it turns out, there is a $100/day cap while we need about $400/day to cover the loss of our cabin  The Extra Transportation $2,000 limit should cover our $100 cost to get back to the bay area (not sure how the details may affect this). The Medical Non-Dive Accident Coverage of $10,000 should we hope cover any costs that Kaiser doesn't like our co-pays (not sure how the details may affect this). When we booked a cruise to finish the second half that we missed, the fare seemed a little higher than what I expected. The Gal broke down the costs and it included platinum insurance ... I jokingly asked if our record showed that we will be buying platinum coverage on all of our cruises in the future. For our next big dive trip on the Emerald to the Caribbean (Roatan, Belize, Cozumel), we now have the Platinum Princess coverage, will have at least some DAN coverage, and likely coverage from our Diamond Resort timeshare (will also cover our dive trip to Hawaii with the same policy). So, for that trip, we should be well covered. Overkill? maybe ... or maybe not. So one should make sure that they have some coverage and understand exactly what it covers.
