Jan 5 Sapphire cruise - Left behind and green with envy!

We had the brilliant plan on our Thanksgiving cruise onboard the Golden to book the Jan 5 Sapphire cruise out of LA to take advantage of the great Princess offer to provide 100% credit on a future cruise. It was perfect - another fun cruise, gets us one cruise away from Elite and we get the credit we can use toward our Alaska cruise this summer.

But like all great plans, there is always the possibility for an unexpected turn of events. In our case it was learning right after we got home after Thanksgiving that our very talented (insert proud Mom look here) Broadway bound high school daughter had been cast in a lead role in a local production for which she had auditioned prior to the holiday. She really wasn't thinking she had gotten a part since she didn't hear back before we left, but somehow she had missed getting the email inviting her to take the role. Much excitement ensues - great news - Hurray - Congratulations!!! And then, uh oh - when do rehearsals begin? Well let's see - first three rehearsals Jan 6, 7, 8. What to do?

So the good news would be we had insurance that would cover our cancellation for any reason, but why should everyone miss out! We had booked two cabins so it was decided that the boys (my son and husband) would go as planned and my daughter and I would stay behind and attend to work and rehearsals. Great plan, right?

Until I waved a sad goodbye to my men this morning, found out that we have friends from a previous cruise onboard and am now enjoying photos of the delicious lunch being consumed in the dining room And oh, did I happen to mention that my son will now be Elite before me?!

So in an effort to feel part of the cruise I will post some occasional "live" (by association) posts here to make me less sad, but probably not less envious. Really I do hope my boys have a great time and they are off to a great start. By all accounts a very easy boarding process, high 80's at San Pedro and delicious lunch being served in the dining room. I'll share some photos in the next post.

Such is my tale of woe!!

What a good Mom! Congratulations to your daughter. I will eagerly follow your "live" posts.

Do you know if chicken cacciatore was on the lunch menu? One of my favorite Princess meals, but it is usually only served on the first day. My DH and I are cruising on the 24th.

Bummer!!! That is a tale of woe. But it is also something wonderful thatyou have done for your daughter, that she will never forget, and when she is taking her bows at the end of the play, you will be so glad that you did it.

Then the two of you go home and plan a special summer cruise for just the two of you.

I can empathize with you although we are going on Thursday ... Weather in San Pedro today is mid-70's.. But will drop to the mid-60's on Thursday... 😠😡 I will be following your thread with great interest and anticipation!

Thank you!

It doesn't appear to be on the lunch menu my DH sent over, but the choices look really good. He very much enjoyed the goat cheese tarts and the lobster kromeskies.

She is already thinking a girls' weekend to NYC would be in order!

Oops you are right. That was a typo on my part - I meant to say 70's. These Santa Ana winds always bring on the dry heat. I'm sure the people freezing in the Midwest and Northeast would love to be in our place today,

Schedule of activities for tonight from the Patter. Movie Poster trivia sounds fun! And DH was happy to discover that the Green Bay/San Francisco game is being shown onboard right now - in fact it is being broadcast on MUTS so the football fans must be pleased!

Congratulations to your daughter!

And I am sorry that you are missing your cruise...

Ditto. What an achievement for your daughter. While disappointing to miss your cruise, being there for her to share this with her is priceless.

Thanks to you all for the kind words for my daughter. She is so excited. It truly is a great opportunity and I'm happy to support her and her dreams so giving up a cruise was an easy decision. I'm actually just very glad my husband and son went ahead with the trip. That was the harder decision as DH really didn't want to go without us, but I convinced him that it was a perfect chance for he and our college student DS to have some nice father/son time. And it still gets us one step closer to Elite and a nice credit for our Alaska cruise, so it's all good! And by doing this thread I sort of get to travel along vicariously!

I so wished we could have taken advantage of one of these 100% fare back cruises out of LA. Too late now. Enjoying the review!

Not necessarily too late! There are a few more of these getaway cruises in March... Maybe Princess will run that promo again!

Karatemom, can you ask if they have the new salads at the IC I.e, beef Thai salad or is it the same type as usual...

Thank you again for this wonderful thread!

The sacrifices of a mom...they never cease! You did the right thing, no matter how hard it was. I know I'd do anything for my kids too.

BTW, I cannot believe you're not Elite yet! Always thought you were! The cruises won't run away. They'll be there when you've got the time but in the meantime, your daughter needs you and that is a memory she'll keep forever. ;)

I can answer this. We were just on the Sapphire over Christmas and they did have beef Thai salad in the IC. It wasn't there every day, though.

DH and DS had a great evening. Enjoyed a good dinner in the Santa Fe dining room (menu below) and played Movie Poster Trivia which they lost by just one point (boo)! No photos of the food - but DH had the Prime Rib and DS the Chicken Fajitas. They said everything was superb!

DH enjoys the Casino with Craps being his game of choice and spent a fun time playing Craps with Alfred of the comedy duo Alfred and Seymour aka The BlackStreet Boyz who are performing onboard. We have enjoyed their comedy on other cruises and they are hilarious.
