anandaindonesia Posted January 12, 2014 #1 Share Posted January 12, 2014 Hmmmm.... what is your recommendation for desserts at MDR? And which item to avoid?

anandaindonesia Posted January 12, 2014 Author #3 Share Posted January 12, 2014 Good question. What do YOU like to have for desert? [/url] N747KT, I am NCL newbie, Epic will be my first this April, so I don't know. Trying to find out from those who knows. :) Thank you.
Demonyte Posted January 12, 2014 #4 Share Posted January 12, 2014 It's all personal preference - I couldn't even tell people in my group what they wouldn't like, let alone a stranger that doesn't give out any background info. For me personally in MDRs the best desserts are the bread pudding and/or vanilla ice cream or sorbets - they also have some ok chocolate cakes etc. From buffet, plain crepe with raspberry sauce (all regular crepe toppings are almost all sugar and too sweet to my taste so I try and find less sweet sauce from the ice cream station). roger001 Posted January 12, 2014 #6 Share Posted January 12, 2014 I usually just keep it simple with a double scoop of ice cream or sherbet.
B6ConMe Posted January 12, 2014 #7 Share Posted January 12, 2014 We're usually too stuffed to eat much dessert so we try the "no sugar added" like the lemon cake but here's a sample menu from the NCL site for Moderno and it looks to be very accurate and close to what we enjoyed in Dec. The desserts are at the bottom. http://www.ncl.com/sites/default/files/19961_Churrascaria_071513_Sun.pdf
MCAT48 Posted January 12, 2014 #8 Share Posted January 12, 2014 I don't normally like cakes but the strawberry shortcake is pretty awesome! If they ever have creme brûlée I'm all over that. The ice cream is always a good option. The chocolate cakes are hit or miss especially the ones in the buffet they usually look good but do not taste as good as they look. ColinIllinois Posted January 12, 2014 #9 Share Posted January 12, 2014 I found the desserts on Epic very appealing visually and completely lacking in taste. I found that to be very odd, especially the ones in the Garden Cafe. Fortunately, they had a great selection of both hard and soft ice creams with toppings. Rare QuattroRomeo Posted January 12, 2014 #10 Share Posted January 12, 2014 The chocolate mousse in the MDR was pretty nice, we had it on the Sun in December. Generally, the best desserts we had were in Le Bistro. Don't know if this will translate to the Epic!
NMLady Posted January 12, 2014 #11 Share Posted January 12, 2014 Something rich: Bread Pudding... That warm bread pudding was one of my favorites too for MDR dessert.
Rockapulco Posted January 12, 2014 #12 Share Posted January 12, 2014 I like to get some of the hot fruit cobbler and then get a scoop of ice cream on top!!!! We like the fresh baked cookies too, but would let them get cold and harden up and use them for ice cream sandwiches. Delish! We bring our large covered coffee mugs with us and use them to make ice cream floats. I think I have an ice cream problem and I didn't know it until this post. Fran

We generally do not eat dessert in the dining rooms because we like to see the early show and service is S L O W. Fran
weltek Posted January 12, 2014 #14 Share Posted January 12, 2014 My favorites are the bread pudding and I think it was a chocolate raspberry cake. Although, there was one sailing where the bread pudding was REALLY disappointing. Same recipe (?), but execution on that ship resulted in an overly sweet and dry dessert. In the past, my favorite was the strawberry souffle with vanilla sauce. Long gone, I think. The coconut souffle they have now isn't as good. gymbomb Posted January 12, 2014 #15 Share Posted January 12, 2014 My favorites are the cheesecake and the bread pudding. At the buffet I might have a cookie or some ice cream, but I am not a fan of the other buffet desserts.
daffodiliaz Posted January 12, 2014 #16 Share Posted January 12, 2014 The sugar-free carrot cake in the MDR is awful. I mean they could've use some other sugar substitute. Lesson learned. The MDR chocolate cake is yummy, IMO. So rich and dense.
anandaindonesia Posted January 12, 2014 Author #17 Share Posted January 12, 2014 Thanks, friends! While food is subjective, but still... ... It's good to have a general idea if what to order and what to avoid. ;) Keep cruising!
GORDONCHICK Posted January 12, 2014 #18 Share Posted January 12, 2014 I usually skip desserts in the MDR (though a sherbet or sorbet have been known to call out to me), I'd rather wait a while, digest and get a custom made crepe up in the buffet. Last cruise, the lemon & blueberry was a favorite.
Sauer-kraut Posted January 12, 2014 #19 Share Posted January 12, 2014 Seriously I'm a dessert fan, and I don't enjoy NCL's desserts! The best is the crepe with ice cream only available in the Buffet at dinner time. I'm not a cheesecake eater, nor do I really care for bread puddings and custards so I'm happy with just plain old ice cream.
buckirj1 Posted January 12, 2014 #20 Share Posted January 12, 2014 As much as I love NCL, I can't think of a single memorable dessert. Not one. As best I can recall, no matter what the dessert was supposed to be...it always wiggled. Hence, I usually stick to ice cream or sherbet if I want dessert. Best sweet onboard are the chocolate croissants at the breakfast buffet.
SteveH2508 Posted January 13, 2014 #21 Share Posted January 13, 2014 Key lime pie in the MDR was pretty good and the New Year menu had a triple dessert with a filo pastry wrapped chocolate centre which was awesome.
cruisebear84 Posted January 13, 2014 #22 Share Posted January 13, 2014 I wasn't attached to any particular dessert on the Breakaway, but my SO was obsessed with this German chocolate cake they only served on the first day of the sailing. Otherwise, soft serve ice cream with tons of sprinkles for us!
ClaireAndMike Posted January 13, 2014 #23 Share Posted January 13, 2014 I'm not a big dessert person BUT - that wafer cookie that comes with the sherbet is sooooooooooooo darn tasty. It's so light and airy when you chew it. Mmmmmm... I wish I could order just a stack of those.
valleyvillage Posted January 13, 2014 #24 Share Posted January 13, 2014 I found the desserts on Epic very appealing visually and completely lacking in taste. I found that to be very odd, especially the ones in the Garden Cafe. Fortunately, they had a great selection of both hard and soft ice creams with toppings. I know, huh? As Woody Allen said, "my mother spent my childhood putting the chicken through the de-flavorizer." I often wonder if they have one in the kitchen. Not all the desserts, but especially the chocolate ones and the sort of jello-ey slices look pretty and have no flavor. Of course, I am old and taste buds die. There is some sort of banana cream pie concoction in Cagney's that I love. And the bread pudding is good, especially if you pour Cointreau all over it! luddite Posted January 13, 2014 #25 Share Posted January 13, 2014 My favorite desert is Mojave. Lots of good memories there. The desserts on NCL are often...lacking. Ice cream or a sherbet are always a good standby.
