Daredevil Evicted For Jumping Off Cruise Ship

I was on the beach at Grand Turk when this took place (Friday, February 21). Just happened to be looking up at the Conquest and saw several people congregating on Deck 3 or 4 (forward) -- whichever deck is just below the lifeboats. I saw the guy jump off and hit the water. One of those "shake your head" moments -- did I actually see that? Watched the guy bobbing around for a minute or two. No-one else seemed to notice. Lost interest, went back to my crossword puzzle.

I don't think this was posted yet...

Looks like it was off the Conquest.

I do not know what to say, I'm sure he lost that "cat that ate the canary" look when he got picked up by the police and booted off.

He looks like a total tool. I hope Carnival made him pay his own way home, but they probably didn't since I'm sure they were eager to get rid of him. If he would have hurt himself whwile being an idiot I bet he would have sued.

I was on the same sailing and also saw it happen and watched the guy swim in. He then walked right in front of my beach lounger. I posted about it here. I was glad to see the video and find out what happened to him. LOL

If anyone is interested, another video on it with more information. It looks like he will be on the hook for the cost of the trip home and banned from Carnival.

And he was surprised by their reaction to it….

He obviously didn't read his contract carefully!

Thanks to everyone who corroborated this story. I was hoping that photoshop had produced another urban legend, but apparently, some people are more foolish than I thought.

If the water was deep enough for the ship to be in, then it's safe enough for a 25-40 foot jump.:D

It's at least thirty feet deep; I'm thinking closer to forty. I've snorkeled out past "the line" where the bottom drops from about fifteen feet to...much deeper, due to dredging out the ship-channel. I didn't quite reach the bottom but it felt like about 35-40 feet in depth.

It's a very narrow ship-channel, which is why the approach to Grand Turk is very tricky in high winds and can occasionally be cancelled for that reason.

From the look of it, that jumper idiot must have swam pretty close to the sunken cannon or anchor on the bottom just inside the dredged area, but I didn't see it in the herky-jerky video. :)

In the article he says "they flew him home". Assuming "they" means Carnival, why would they do that?

I'd of let him find his own way home.

I agree. He should have had to pay his own way home.

Someone earlier mentioned they paid for it likely because they are responsible for him in that country and want to make sure he leaves ASAP. In the post linked above, the video says that he will ultimately be repsonsible for the costs.

I'm not defending this fewl in any way, but the distance to shore here is nowhere near a quarter mile.

Whatever. I have been to Grand Turk I know where the ship is dock. Does it really make a difference, he had troubling swimming that was the point. But maybe the next time you go there, you should take a tape measure and let us know the exact distance the beach is the ship, because it seems awfully important point you want to make.

Here's our jumper -- see the jon boat with armed Mexican soldiers? They just delivered that kid still on the steps at the pier; that's the Carnival Captain, First Mate and Mexican authorities in Costa Maya. Kid (19) had jumped from the highest deck as a prank. The police took him to the slammer in Costa Maya, clad only in his trunks. Carnival Captain and First Mate finagled the kid out of the slammer, back to the brig on the ship, and sent home to his mamma from Cozumel. Don't mess with Mexican authorities!!! (I love the posture of the Carnival Captain with hands on hips -- don't you just know what he's saying to that kid!"

One of the great mysteries of life is why so many people seem to believe what they read or see on the internet. You would think that common sense alone would keep CCers from repeating what the first poster wrote, that "they" paid for the flight.

For what it is worth, most news media presentations have reported that he will be responsible for the flight home. (Yes, I know, this does not preclude Carnival paying and billing, but that is not the point)

I recently read a thread where PVSA came up (for cruise originating in US, ending abroad). On the first page every single post referring to the statute was completely wrong. Even posters with more than 5,000 posts. 20 posts and not one single post correctly pointing out that a cruise originating in US and ending in a foreign port is not even subject to PVSA.

Astonishing. But like a contagious disease, the misinformation will now undoubtedly be spread by everyone else reading those posts.

By watching the video. IMO he is struggling. (In my youth I was a swim instructor and lifeguard) You really see this when the camera is underwater. Watch his free hand he can't seem to get it out of the water.

I just saw this on YouTube and if you click the comments there is an email address to obtain usage rights. At least he is trying to make something out of it.

In both reports that I saw they said (or at least implied) that Carnival paid for his flight home.

His own quote was from the article posted on this topic

"the jump took place on the Grand Turk Islands. The jump was roughly 50 to 60 feet. And I went underwater maybe 20 feet or so. It was maybe a 15 minute swim to shore. I was then escorted by the local police back to the crew ship. Where they then brought me into a small room and told me that I was going to have to disembark the ship immediately. They kicked me off and I had to spend a couple days on the island. They then flew me home the next day."

Bolded is mine.

I apologize. How people responded was in fact reasonable in this case. I believe Carnival always does bill afterward, but you would not know that from what he wrote, and since he was the writer, it is not unreasonable for people to conclude he got away scot free. Again, sorry about that part of my post.

I am so glad he is alive and he had some "scares"..no matter what bravado he shares afterword..he may have learned a lesson..and i am no expert.but was a fairly good swimmer,,never did that underwater turn but loved doing laps in my college's gorgeous indoor pool and beat a guy that visited me for hunting and skiing from Oregon to here..LOL. That kid was in shock and scared at beginning I thought too...LOL on the Captain..he looks not mean..but like a mad dad that is going to teach a lesson...god bless Carnival for not making it worse..kids can really go bad that way too..Sarah

Well...have to say a tough consequence that makes a LOT of sense...he has to see himself as a liability like others have...I hope they would make it for 30 years or something...not his whole life..maybe when 65 or something he can take one with his wife who will sign for liability..although he may be unable to insure as a passenger for life with this stunt...

My wife tells me that years ago (back in the 80's) locals would come on to the ship and collect money to dive off the ship. I think she said it was in Cozumel. Maybe he was just being nostalgic.

There were ports where people, kids, would throw coins off the ships and people would drive for it.

Like feeding fish or ducks or something, watching humans scramble for coins.

Kind of sad and demeaning actually.
