Shopping for Go Pro's in St Thomas

Does anyone know the prices of Go Pro's in St Thomas (not just the % retail)? Retail price can be different for everyone depending where they live or their tax rate.

My son is looking at possibly getting a Go Pro like the Hero 3+. We can get it where we live for $399 + tax for a total of $419. Does anyone know if there are better deals than that like at Boolchands?

Ms411,

Is Boolchands' generally cheaper than F.Y.E.?

Outside of the tax, doesn't sound like that big of a bargain versus what the OP can get at home. I'd say the prices are fairly standard from retail to on-line for both Silver and Black versions. Given that, if it were me, I'd buy at home and then use it on all the cruise.

Thanks for checking. So it is really not much of a savings except tax. I can get it here at Best Buy and it includes the following:

GoPro Hero3+ Black Edition Camera

Lithium-ion battery

USB charging cable

Wi-Fi remote

Standard and vertical quick-release buckles, curved and flat adhesive mounts, 3-way pivot arm, mounting hardware

I also looked online for sd cards and the smallest one I could find for that camera was 16 gb for $20-so 8 gb is probably worth about $10.

So it is really not much of a savings except tax. ===> Correct.

Lithium-ion battery

USB charging cable

Wi-Fi remote

Standard and vertical quick-release buckles,

curved and flat adhesive mounts,

3-way pivot arm, mounting hardware.

Any MICRO-SD cards you buy for GoPro must be Class 10.

I bought my GoPro Silver 3+ at Boolchands in Sint Maarten right on the pier

cost me $299 for the basic package

which includes some mounts and other gear (as described in the above quote)

that extra stuff is stashed in the box under where the camera is display-mounted.

The guy threw in a Micro-SD card and I added the two tripod mounts and the suction-cup mount

- we settled at $400 for the whole bundle. I'm happy.

It's quite a bit of gear when you open it all up and spread it around. You'll see. :)

Prices and availablity in St.Thomas are very similar/identical to St.Maarten

seeing as the same Indian outfit/family run these operations in St.Kitts, Sint Maarten and in St.Thomas,

so if they don't catch you one place, they'll catch you at another! ;)

Silver one is $299 at Best Buy and on Go Pro online as well.

Glad you are happy with what you got.

Like Apple products

this seems to be a case of standard pricing

no matter where you buy it.

The only factor re. Duty Free in the islands

is that you get it for the bare bones Suggested Retail

minus any Sales Tax, Stateside.

And yes, the camera comes with the waterproof case.

Great info.

Might be better to buy at home if there is ever a problem all things considered.

Might be better to buy at home

so you can get up that learning curve before you start your cruise!

Don't do it like I did.

I bought my GoPro on the cruise, had to charge it in the cabin

read the instruction booklet assiduously, and learn real quick

while "shooting blind" -not the best way to start one's GoPro "career".

Luckily I came ashore with sixty one short clips

about half of which are reasonably useful, I hope

but I now have to learn cutting and editing, as well!

Start learning your GoPro NOW.

It sounds like it won't save you much and unless you already know how to use it, it would be better to just watch for sales or package deals that you can get around Christmas. My son would be using it for karate demos and skiing so it wouldn't matter so much for the cruise. It would be cool to see him do the flowrider with it on his head though.

  • 2 weeks later...

We went on our trip hoping to find a great deal on a gopro while in st thomas. After stopping at camera stores on 5 islands the best deal is in st thomas at royal carribean camera. Price was the same as in US, but we were able to get them to include a 32gb high spped card and no tax. It did include the standard mounts the same as US packages and the remote. Not really a big enough price difference to make such an effort, but it is a little cheaper. No other store in our trip would meet or beat this price. We tried shops in st martin, barbados, st. Lucia, st. Kitts also.
